To read this book is to learn how a colonization exterminated the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Laws, economics process, natives agriculture, how the urbanization burned the forest and fens. Except the first chaptre, about the evolution of the forest by geologic times, all is perfect.
I use this book in my class - Geography of Brazil and the students love it. (...)

Having actually lived in the country and visited the Amazon rain forest, this depiction of the destruction of the Atlantic rainforest and the effects there is highly factual and rather interesting. It is one of the only successful ecological histories about a forest! If you want a good read about the disappearance of one of Brazil's most historical aspects, then this book is for you.

Women's Lip a Huge Hit!

Great Ceasar's Ghost! Roz Warren has scored a huge hit with her new quote book, "Women's Lip." Warren, who edited a groundbreaking and much loved series of women's humor anthologies & cartoon collections (see her "Women's Glib," "Women's Glibber, " &c.), raises the bar here for quote book quality in the spirit of her earlier "Glibquips." If you are the kind of person who usually only buys humor books to give as gifts, do yourself a big favor and pick up a second copy of this one for yourself. Go ahead! You're smart enough, you're pretty enough, and you could use a good laugh! I understand that the earlier titles in the series are coming back into print soon. Hurrah! Did I mention that I like this book!?

Very Sassy!

The Suquamish Native American leader Chief Seattle gave his immortal speech in 1854 during treaty negotiations with the American government which was intent on forcing the Native people of Washington's Puget Sound onto reservations. Highly recommended for Native American studies reference and reading list collections, The World Of Chief Seattle: How Can One Sell The Air? puts Chief Seattle's life into the context of his time and provides the reader with a brief history of the region and its many tribes, with particular emphasis on the Suquamish. Included under Warren Jefferson's ably editorship is the complete text of Chief Seattle's speech, enhanced with rare, vintage photographs of village life.

This book is very informative and research that went into the book shows that the author truly cared to show in the best possible light the lifestyle of Suquamish's most famous Chief. Chief Seattle has been quoted and misquoted so much over the years, that this book is a breath of fresh air. A great way to learn about Suquamish and a glimpse into history. I feel that this book is something that all ages will enjoy reading.

a rare tribute!

THE WORLD OF CHIEF SEATTLE is an awesome effort, quietly informative, eloquent as the wind. We read about The Land around the Puget Sound & its climate. How The Suquamish People, isolated by mountains & vast stretches of ocean, developed lifestyles unlike any encountered by explorers.

About Potlatch, Canoes, Food, Houses & Clothing. About Intertribal Warfare & Indian Boarding Schools, & about the The Point Elliott Treaty & Reservation Life.

A just homage to the ways of our ancestors & a profound little book, one that will touch the heart & soul of any who read it - about a fine way of life inexorably altered by strangers from afar.

A must for anyone interested in living with the land, & learning how to treat all our relations with respect.

in volume 4 the age of apocalypse comes to an end in the issue xmen omega. however for some reason there are more issues included afterwards that really have little to do with AoA. the AoA series is great but i think these collections could have been better. they could have left out some of the stuff in volume one and all the stuff after xmen omega in volume 4 and made it into three volumes.

So many of the people I care about have heart disease, and this book was a terrific explanation in layperson's terms of all the things that enter into and are a part of heart disease. The illustrations are especially good in helping with the explanations. Dr. Sauvage also provides simple means to help prevent/correct problems. This is a terrific book for patients to read and then ask any follow-up questions about their condition with their doctors/cardiologists.

I especially like Dr. Sauvage's including his opinions within the book about what has worked for him in his experiences. For example, he includes serving others as an important aspect of life.

I knew nothing about heart disease until my father had a heart attack. I always deal with tramatic situations by trying to understand the problem. I purchased about 14 books on heart disease, and "You Can Beat Heart Disease" was by far the best. This book was written for the average person wanting to understand what happened to someone they love and how to move in the right direction to improve the situation going forward. An added bonus to the book is that I am changing the way I manage my own health for now on. Thanks go to the author, Lester R. Sauvage.

Dr. Sauvage's newest book, The Better Life Diet, is a simple diet that anyone can follow. It answers questions that we all have about diet and health. The meal plan is practical (any busy person can follow) and has lots of variety/flavor. I appreciate the fact that Dr. Sauvage has evaulated all the competitive (and conflicting) diets on the market and pulls "the best points from each of them".

This book was given to me as a gift. At first glance I thought it to be just another devotional or book of prayers. I was wrong. The introduction is superb in its description of prayer, holding great definitions of our privileged job of talking to our Creator. The practical, personal testimonies of this introduction increase the credibility of the co-authors. The introduction made me want to keep on turning the pages. I was not disappointed. The day by day guides were fresh, succinct and personally very helpful for me. Having the numbered days insured my success in keeping track if I got behind. I wanted to cover all the issues. I like this book so much that I am ordering copies for my whole family so that we can use the guide together this summer. I'm also ordering a few more to have on hand for gifts. It is always valuable to have quality books to give away that I know will truly help another grow closer to the Savior.

It is April, 1865, the Civil War has just ended and Abe Lincoln is sitting in the White House waiting for his wife, Mary, to finish dressing. This is a happy night and the Lincoln's are going to Ford's Theater to see a play. As Lincoln patiently waits, he thinks back over his life, his simple upbringing and how he made his way to the presidency...from the small log cabin in Kentucky with only one window, to his love of learning and going to law school, to entering politics and finally becoming president, to believing in one country, whole, not half slave, half free..... Ann Warren Turner's eloquently written "fictional biography" and Wendell Minor's beautifully expressive and detailed artwork combine to capture your youngster's imagination with poignant, quiet emotion and moving, understated text. Historical notes at the end fill in the rest of the story, including Lincoln's assassination and can be used to augment lessons and enhance discussions. Abe Lincoln Remembers is a beautifully written, thoughtful story, perfect for youngsters 5-9 and makes a wonderful addition to all home libraries.

This is a wonderful biography for children, especially for children who are already familiar with Lincoln's story. The illustrations are superb, the best since the Daulaire's Caldecott Medal-winning biography of 1957. Wendell Minor's paintings humanize Lincoln without sacrificing that essentail iconic quality we usually expect in a Lincoln portrait.

The definitive book on abortion practice

Although Hern intended his book for other practitioners, it is a valuable resource for activists, lawmakers, and attorneys. Hern, a member of the National Abortion Federation and co-author of their standards of practice, is recognized by prolifer and prochoicer alike as the foremost authority on abortion practice in the United States. Abortion Practice covers all aspects of practice, from counseling to follow-up, including guidelines for the assessment of abortion facilities. Courts have upheld Hern's guidelines as a standard of care in malpractice litigation. Public officials might consider his recommendations in drafting abortion policy, regulation, and law. Prolife and prochoice activists alike will find food for thought and political ammunition in the pages of this detailed and comprehensive work. Be forewarned that this book is not for the squeamish; but for the stalwart reader of any political or ideological persuasion, Abortion Practice is a must-buy.

Agents of Change

I was pretty disappointed when Wildstorm cancelled the Stormwatch series, having stuck by the title from day 1 and absolutely loving what Warren Ellis had done for the book. Had I known what Ellis was planning, I never would have worried.

From the literal ashes of Stormwatch (seriously, he killed roughly 90% of the team) comes the Authority, a new breed of superheroes. The Authority was the antidote to an eternity of superhero titles that either tried to preserve the time-honored status quo or out "extreme" each other. Extreme in this case meant bigger guns, smaller IQs, and copious amounts of T&A. The Authority was about a group of heroes who weren't interested in battling the same old villains for the same old reasons. They set out to change the world, operating outside any government's jurisdiction according to their own precepts and morals. I know that sounds potentially fascist, but the book really comes closest to what you'd get if you had real people - complete with emotional issues, baggage, etc. - with the will and the means to actually act on their beliefs and change things for the better.

The Authority's introduction marked a turning point in the industry. This book slammed the brakes on a decade's worth of dumber and meaner and turned the industry towards smarter stories, sharper dialogue, realistic characters, and a higher overall quality standard. That may seem hard to believe given the abundance of great titles released in recent years (All Star Superman, Squadron Supreme/Supreme Power, Daredevil, New X-Men, and the entire Ultimate Marvel line come to mind), but the Authority really seemed to kickstart the whole process. And yes I'm aware that the Vertigo titles had been doing that kind of thing for years, but let's face it, those books were too damned weird for most comics fans in the first place.

I think some of this book's significance is overshadowed by the breakneck pace of the first dozen issues. With the team fighting state-sponsored super-terrorism, invaders from a parallel earth, and what can only be described as God, you don't quite see just how subversive the book was. Mark Millar gets a lot of credit for that on his Authority run, but Warren Ellis was the one who carefully laid that foundation. Re-read his Stormwatch run and the Authority issues collected here and you can see that he was definitely a man with a plan. It's like he was softening all of us up so Millar could come in and kick our collective teeth in. Of course, I think anyone would be receptive to Ellis's message after being so thoroughly dazzled by Bryan Hitch's artwork on this title. Hitch, along with inker Paul Neary and colorist Laura DePuy unleashed powerful cinematic illustrations worthy of the latest blockbuster movie.

It should be obvious by now that I absolutely love this book. I think it's one of the high water marks in the comics industry, and one every serious reader of superhero comics (yes, I know how that sounds) should own.

If you can manage to track down a copy, the Absolute Authority hardcover, which collects the Authority #1-12, is the very best way to experience this groundbreaking series. Not only is the sturdier hardcover format better for preserving the book for the inevitable repeat readings, but the larger page size (roughly 33% larger than the standard comic page) is the perfect format for appreciating Hitch's gorgeous cinematic artwork. It's almost like you could fall right into the pages.

PS - Given the success of these Absolute editions, shouldn't we be seeing an Absolute Stormwatch or two at some point? The Authority is really just the second half of the story.

Absolutely Amazing

This 1999 collection consists of issues #1-#12 of the Authority made up of the three initial storylines, The Circle, Shiftships, Outer Dark that introduces this unique and innovative superhero concept to readers.

"The Circle" is the introduction to the team of superheroes up against an old foe in the Wildstorm universe who sets his country of Gamorra against the rest of the world. "Shiftships" bring the team up against an invading alternate dimension. And "Outer Dark" is the climax of the first three stories that changes the team and sets up the next half in Volume 2.

The Authority is made up of characters that are an homage to your traditional comic superheroes. There's Apollo, "The Sun God" with Superman-like powers. The Midnighter, "Night's Bringer of War", a fighter who has had enhancement made on his body to make him like the ultimate Batman warrior. The Engineer, "The Maker" whose liquid metal technology lets her make her body into anything. The Doctor, "The Shaman" in touch with the world who can bend reality to his liking. Jack Hawksmoor, "The God of Cities" controls and communicates with cities. Swift, "The Winged Huntress" an angel-like bird of prey. And enigmatic Jenny Sparks, "The Spirit of the 20th Century".

The stories are written by Warren Ellis of Transmetropolitan, Planetary, Global Frequency, and currently Ultimate Fantastic Four fame. His stories are amazing from their grand opening to issues and eye-popping cliffhangers and the unique spin he takes on superheroes as those who do not fight a weekly badguy, but those that try to make a difference and change the world.

Penciller Bryan Hitch first caught my eye in the Ultimates and through his run on the Justice League. What he brings to the work is beautifully portrayed art that makes his pencilling almost paintlike. The movements and expressions of his characters are near life-like and his action scenes seem like something plucked out of a blockbuster movie.

The "special features" that come at the end of this edition is a set of script pages from the first storyarc.

This is definitely a comic that is a must have on any collector's bookshelf. It's hard to find a copy, but if you do get your hands on one, don't hesitate to take it home.
