Excellent but mine has publisher defectsReview Date: 2008-01-08
I did buy this set from Amazon.com a couple of weeks ago. My New testament books are wrongly inserted and binded. The defect is on page 385-448 that normally they should be of Acts and Romans of the New Testament. But the publisher wrongly inserted and binded Joshua and Judges of the Old Testament in these pages!!!. It means that this New testament book loses the correct pages of Acts and Romans in the corresponding pages for nearly 70 pages!!! a strange phenomenon for me to encounter with (hit the Jackpot I think). I think there will be the defect like this in other or several ones in this lot. Before you buy this set make sure You may check it out for the good one without this defect.

It is, quite simply, the definitive guide to that much-maligned plant: the nettle.
This book has become invaluable to me in my work of complementary therapy. It has joined the many excellent books that I suggest to my clients, if they seek alternative remedies that work.
I have no doubt that whatever interests you have - you will love this book and its priceless information.

Approximate Dynamic Programming for practitioners and educationReview Date: 2007-12-02
I strongly recommend the book for all practitioners facing large-scale complex dynamic programs. It is also an excellent textbook.
Approximate Dynamic Programming for practionersReview Date: 2008-02-16
Perspectives from the authorReview Date: 2007-09-10
I have adopted the notational style where S is the state of the system, and x is a decision, using the language of math programming. x may have many thousands of dimensions for some problem classes (although the book considers many classical problems where decisions are relatively simple).
The challenge that arises when x is a vector when we use dynamic programming is the expectation within the max/min operator. Bellman's equation is typically written
V(S_t) = max (C(S_t,x) + discount * E{V(S_{t+1})|S_t} )
If x is a vector, we generally need the power of math programming to solve the maximization problem. The challenge is the expectation. We avoid this using the post-decision state variable, which is the state immediately after we have made a decision, but before any time has passed (bringing new information). Denoted S^x_t, the post-decision state variable is a deterministic function of S and x. If V^x(S^x_t) is the value function around the post-decision state variable, we obtain
V(S_t) = max (C(S_t,x) + discount * V^x(S^x_t)
The book provides a number of practical examples of this, but the key is that the maximization problem is now a deterministic problem. The final step is that we have to replace V^x() with a suitably chosen approximation. If our maximization problem is a linear, nonlinear or integer programming problem, we have to choose an approximation for V^x() that allows these algorithmic tools to be used.

Great deal of material Review Date: 2008-03-04
While a great deal of scholarly research has been done on Carl Bark's Uncle Scrooge character, this is one of the first editions done on the Casper and Richie Rich characters. In fact Mr. Christopher Barat makes some interesting comparisons to the comic book adventures of Casper and Richie with Disney's richest duck. He also does a great job summarazing and analysing many of the Richie Rich and Casper stories while looking for originality and other creative highlights in these hundreds of stories, which can get very maudlin after a while.
Something that caught my attention is when Richie Rich, who has always been faithful to his girlfriend, Gloria, has a unique encounter with the antagonist Mayda Munny in a dream sequence. Hmm. . . Maybe Richie is a bit more complicated than we thought. Anyway,it took Mr. Baret to draw this to my attention.
I also have to give Mr. Baret credit for using the word, "discombulate." Hey! Anybody who can use a word like that is all right in my book.
The text amply has interviews with the surviving Harvey company personal, episode guides to various Richie Rich tv programs, histories on Sad Sack (a favorite of mine), and volunteered art from a variety of people.
If there is a second edition, it would be nice to include an episode guide to the ninties Casper series, (which is up on the website) and a few other odds and ends. Another possible article could be on the best Richie and Casper stories that might have had a "bittersweet" feel to them. I also thought there was something poignant with Casper and Wendy's relationship due to the fact that Casper was ultimately a ghost while longing to be human. Wendy, however, was still a human girl, though a sorceress, which must have made things difficult for the two of them at times.
And on a totally trivial note, I'd also love to hear a bit more the short-lived, "Fruitman" comic from the sixites?
While this book might not be for everyone. It's essential to comic book historians who need to know there was more to to the industry that just superheroes and Disney. Invaluable alone for the Sad Sack material.
Sincerely,
James Smith III

Look for the Big HReview Date: 2007-01-22
At first I felt a bit ripped off since, had one been a long time subscriber, one would already have all these issues. But then I thought, "Why go to the trouble to rewrite the whole book from the fanzines rather than just reprinting them? Obviously Mark had the same idea. Great minds think alike, and so do we.
This is the best sort of browsing book, jammed with about a zillion pictures as well as Harvey trivia approached from every angle. Who knew Jerry Lewis did Sad Sack movies? Where did my favorite Harvey comic star, Hot Stuff, come from? What's the relation of the Famous/ Paramount cartoons to the comics?
I myself eagerly await each issue of a Little Lulu fanzine called The Hollywood EcLLectern, and I can't think of anything better than if all those issues were bound together in a book. What a happy thought that Mark Arnold has been there and done that with the big H comics, and even better that I can kick back with this enthralling volume and another H (Hefeweisen) and delve into the Harvey Fun Times.

Devastating CritiqueReview Date: 2007-03-17
It's great to see another voice rising, part of the growing tide, of those intellectuals (contrary to Richard Dawkin's assertions that anyone who doesn't believe in evolution is stupid, or something like that) who can see through the rhetoric in the evolution debate.
Well-written, well-reasoned out, this book ought to be read more folks than who will probably end up reading it. But it's great it's out there and can, I hope, only inspire those who read it to tell others about it.

An Important New ResourceReview Date: 2006-11-18
In this book are found many, many quotes from the scientists themselves. In this way the author is able to "use their own words against them," so to speak. Particularly enlightening was the chapter on Charles Darwin himself. There you find that Darwin recognized that "my speculations run beyond the bounds of science." It's curious that today's scientists do not see that evolution is ultimately a faith based belief system, and it is indeed beyond the bounds of science.
In the introduction Mr. Johns states, "A doctorate in jurisprudence does not equate with a degree in microbiology." In that regard I feel that he sells himself a little short. His grasp of very technical scientific issues exceeds that of many of the scientists I have encountered.
I feel that this will be an important book for those wishing to better understand the issues being dealt with in the creation/evolution debate. I commend Mr. Johns for his diligence in the preparation of this work.

Solid Advice for Bible Study TeachersReview Date: 2007-04-01
Van Kampen is a Christian writer and a Sunday school teacher, but not a Christian educator. She recognizes this blind spot in her own background and fills it with interviews with other experienced college and church Christian educators. Bravo! Her use of the case study approach is innovative and it gives her book depth.
Two points stick out in my mind from reading the book. First, I never considered myself called to teach Bible study. Her discussion of the call was refreshing and it spoke to me personally. Her presentation convinced me that teaching is more than a transitional activity. Second, Van Kampen made a serious point about getting to know your student, both in class and out, for the purpose of facilitating transform. Again--bravo! I have always felt that spiritual development was a goal. For me the question remains how to do it best. Van Kampen provides helpful guidance.
I recommend this book to anyone who is passionate about teaching Bible study.
