The Wiersbe Commentaries are normally sold in individual soft-bound book-by-book editions. This particular two-volumn set contains all the individual commentaries hard-bound and in a much reduced overall price. Plus there is a CD that contains the commentaries included. A great value overall.

Warren Wiersbie's commentary collects all of his "Be..." Bible studies, for both the Old and New Testaments. He is an uncommonly gifted Bible teacher. He has an exceptional ability to get to the heart of any given text, convey that essence in a clear, concise and memorable way and his very warm and astute pastor's heart insures that the message is significant, and easily applicable to the average reader's life. A wonderful feature of this edition is a cd-rom containing the entire text in pdf. files which can be downloaded to a computer. As I follow my various daily Bible reading plans, I always easily check what he has to say about the day's Scripture passage, and am almost always blessed by what I read. Whenever I preach or teach, I always consult this fine resource. It is an exceptional source of pithy sayings, and on point stories, and well organized outlines. I also have William Barclay's Daily Bible Study on cd-rom. Both resources share the ability to be rich sources of personal spiritual nourishment and insight to the Bible.

It is an excellent modern devotional bible commentary set. Originally they are " be " series and later printed in 6 volume edition a few years ago. Now come in 2 volumes with CD Rom for the full content.

I did buy this set from Amazon.com a couple of weeks ago. My New testament books are wrongly inserted and binded. The defect is on page 385-448 that normally they should be of Acts and Romans of the New Testament. But the publisher wrongly inserted and binded Joshua and Judges of the Old Testament in these pages!!!. It means that this New testament book loses the correct pages of Acts and Romans in the corresponding pages for nearly 70 pages!!! a strange phenomenon for me to encounter with (hit the Jackpot I think). I think there will be the defect like this in other or several ones in this lot. Before you buy this set make sure You may check it out for the good one without this defect.

Review from Legal Information ALERT, page 12, April 1999, Vol. 18, No. 4. Reviewed by Lisa Mecklenberg, Electronic Services Librarian, State Law Library of Montana, Helena, MT INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY The Year 2000 Computer Crisis: Law, Business, Technology. The Year 2000 is fast approaching. Will you and your computers be prepared? The authors of this timely book offer to help you answer that question by organizing their text in a logical, straightforward fashion. The book includes seven chapters, followed by a forms section, appendixes, a glossary, a bibliography, and an index. The first chapter serves as an introduction to the technical issues involved in creating a Y2K plan, with subsequent chapters focusing on developing this plan, audits, the Y2K implementation process, contracts, Y2K litigation, and insurance. The fact that the intended audience is lawyers highlights one of its strengths. By focusing on the legal aspects of Y2K, Scott and Reid steer attorneys toward the production of appropriate contacts, warranties, remedies, and performance standards. They also suggest ways to protect directors, officers, and companies from lawsuits involving Y2K issues. To that end, the forms section is very good, featuring "Sample Year 2000 Compliance Agreements," a "Sample Complaint for Year 2000 Failures," and both hardware and software inventory forms. Chapter 5, on contracts, contains helpful advice on various Y2K agreements, including license agreements, supplier agreements, and Year 2000 consulting/remediation agreements. Scott and Reid also address the availability of insurance coverage for Y2K liability, as well as strategies, claims, and defenses that will be used by parties in Y2K litigation. Both authors have a significant amount of practical experience in this area -Scott has 20 years of experience representing a number of computer and software companies and Reid has served as a litigation strategist, an expert witness, and a special master in complex computer trial matters. Issued in looseleaf format, The Year 200 Computer Crisis permits periodic updates as new Y2K developments occur -it includes a December 1998 update that expands the book by more than 200 pages. A noteworthy feature is a series of checklists (i.e., awareness, assessment, implementation) to assist in the process of making a firm or business Y2K ready that are easy to follow and understand. The appendixes are also quiet useful, as several groups that have implemented the Y2K preparation procedures outlined in the book are profiled. These include "A Year 2000 Preliminary Analysis Report" prepared for the State of Rhode Island and a Technical Note from the Federal Reserve Board on "Testing Personal Computers for Year 2000 Compatibility." There is also a helpful list of Year 2000 web sites. For those looking for a "hands-on," planning-to-take-care-of-the-office-crisis-yourself guide to Y2K, this book may be frustrating, as it doesn't offer a nuts and bolts approach to making computers crisis-ready. For those, however, who would like a comprehensive overview of the Y2K phenomenon and guidelines on how to proceed with the handling of Y2K problems for clients, this book would be valuable. However, you better get it fast -many of the implementation procedures for addressing Y2K problems should already have been initiated. It is also highly recommended for law firms, which may actually have to litigate Y2K issues.

An enormously valuable tool to anyone assessing Y2K issues..

I was extremely impressed with the scope and quality of the book. Warren Reid is the most knowledgeable person I know with respect to the technical and practical business aspects of the Year 2000 problem and his willingness to share his extensive experience and practical wisdom makes this book an enormously valuable tool to anyone assessing Y2K issues. Mike Scott has already established himself as one of the world's leading authorities on computer-related legal issues. By drawing on his many years of experience with the computer and multimedia industries, Mike provides legal and practical insights into the Y2K legal issues that every lawyer involved in the Y2K maelstrom will find extremely helpful. ...Congratulations on publishing such a timely and useful work.

I think when the year 2000 comes all tax payers are going to have to pay for the upage on the computers and I myself don't think that would be a good idea because they are going to raise a big arguement and lead to a bad fight against the upage on this Y2K deal. It will go before a grand jury and loose the battle, then people will be mad.

This was the best book on ADD my wife and I have read. It not only explained ADD in understandable terms, it also provided us with practical ways to help our child succeed at school, at church, and in society. We appreciated the examples given because they enabled us to explain our situation to others in ways that help others (family and friends) to understand that ADD is not a curse and that an ADD child is not damaged goods. This is a must-read for anyone related in any way to someone with ADD.

After reading this book I feel more prepared to face the day to day challenges living with a child with ADD. This book offered practical ideas and easy to understand information about Attention Deficit Disorder. I have already utilized many of the ideas mentioned in the book. My only concern with this book was the publishing date. This book was published in the 90's. I am aware that a lot of new research has been done since this book was published so the chapter about medication is dated.

I've read many, many books (most recommended by my pediatrician) on this subject for my 2 sons who are affected. This is, by far, the best, most insightful book I've read yet on ADHD! I actually called and recommended THIS BOOK to my pediatrician!

If you have a child, or student, affected by ADHD, this is a MUST READ! It will change your perspective and help you gain the patience with that child that you thought was long gone.

I would also recommend Celebrate! ADHD by Kirk & Anita Martin.

Outstanding book! These nasty weeds I used to roundup, I have found to be one of the most healing plants yet. I now use nettle for everything. Our horses shine like no other. We use it for healing as well as for nutrition. I find myself looking in my friends yards seeing if they have the pesky weed for me to harvest. Its great on chicken too!

I have a large patch of Stinging Nettles close by the house. I knew there were some uses like compost and tea but I did not know that Nettles could be used for so many different things. It is, quite simply, the definitive guide to that much-maligned plant: the nettle.

This book has become invaluable to me in my work of complementary therapy. It has joined the many excellent books that I suggest to my clients, if they seek alternative remedies that work.

I have no doubt that whatever interests you have - you will love this book and its priceless information.

Approximate Dynamic Programming for practitioners and education

In this book Warren nicely blends his practical experience in modeling and solving complex dynamic and stochastic problems occurring in a variety of industries (transportation, the financial sector, energy, etc) with algorithmical and theoretical aspects of approximate dynamic programming. The book can be either used as a textbook in undergraduate or graduate courses, or for practitioners to learn about recent advances in this exciting area. Indeed, I have already used it twice as a textbook for a graduate course, and on the other hand, I have recommended it to several practitioners. Without doubt, this is an important contribution in approximate dynamic programming.

I strongly recommend the book for all practitioners facing large-scale complex dynamic programs. It is also an excellent textbook.

Our consulting firm has successfully collaborated with Dr. Powell for years and I have seen first hand how ADP solves large scale, real world problems that would frankly be intractable by many traditional traditional operations research or optimization techniques. While consulting firms and other business jealously guard their intellectual property, it is terrific for all of us that academics are rewarded for precisely the opposite. I would highly recommend for any serious practitioner to grab a copy of this book and study it. Probably one of the best $100s you will have spent in a while.

This book represents a paradigm shift in the presentation of dynamic programming/stochastic optimization. Classical treatments of dynamic programming/neuro-dynamic programming/reinforcement learning typically assume small "action spaces," and often assume the presence of a one-step transition matrix. By contrast, authors working with decision vectors in the presence of uncertainty often turn to stochastic linear programming. But these techniques typically struggle when applied to multistage applications. It is extremely hard to solve most of these problems without taking advantage of the presence of a state variable that captures previous history.

I have adopted the notational style where S is the state of the system, and x is a decision, using the language of math programming. x may have many thousands of dimensions for some problem classes (although the book considers many classical problems where decisions are relatively simple).

The challenge that arises when x is a vector when we use dynamic programming is the expectation within the max/min operator. Bellman's equation is typically written

V(S_t) = max (C(S_t,x) + discount * E{V(S_{t+1})|S_t} )

If x is a vector, we generally need the power of math programming to solve the maximization problem. The challenge is the expectation. We avoid this using the post-decision state variable, which is the state immediately after we have made a decision, but before any time has passed (bringing new information). Denoted S^x_t, the post-decision state variable is a deterministic function of S and x. If V^x(S^x_t) is the value function around the post-decision state variable, we obtain

V(S_t) = max (C(S_t,x) + discount * V^x(S^x_t)

The book provides a number of practical examples of this, but the key is that the maximization problem is now a deterministic problem. The final step is that we have to replace V^x() with a suitably chosen approximation. If our maximization problem is a linear, nonlinear or integer programming problem, we have to choose an approximation for V^x() that allows these algorithmic tools to be used.

Great deal of material

Review Date: 2008-03-04
The Best of the Harveyville Fun Times packs in a great deal of research. Culled from some of the best articles in the fanzines history, many pieces focus on the various Harvey characters in many different media; television, films, and comics. Indeed, you could spend many hours here, but sections of the material can be slightly repetitious since some show up again in various articles.

While a great deal of scholarly research has been done on Carl Bark's Uncle Scrooge character, this is one of the first editions done on the Casper and Richie Rich characters. In fact Mr. Christopher Barat makes some interesting comparisons to the comic book adventures of Casper and Richie with Disney's richest duck. He also does a great job summarazing and analysing many of the Richie Rich and Casper stories while looking for originality and other creative highlights in these hundreds of stories, which can get very maudlin after a while.

Something that caught my attention is when Richie Rich, who has always been faithful to his girlfriend, Gloria, has a unique encounter with the antagonist Mayda Munny in a dream sequence. Hmm. . . Maybe Richie is a bit more complicated than we thought. Anyway,it took Mr. Baret to draw this to my attention.

I also have to give Mr. Baret credit for using the word, "discombulate." Hey! Anybody who can use a word like that is all right in my book.

The text amply has interviews with the surviving Harvey company personal, episode guides to various Richie Rich tv programs, histories on Sad Sack (a favorite of mine), and volunteered art from a variety of people.

If there is a second edition, it would be nice to include an episode guide to the ninties Casper series, (which is up on the website) and a few other odds and ends. Another possible article could be on the best Richie and Casper stories that might have had a "bittersweet" feel to them. I also thought there was something poignant with Casper and Wendy's relationship due to the fact that Casper was ultimately a ghost while longing to be human. Wendy, however, was still a human girl, though a sorceress, which must have made things difficult for the two of them at times.

And on a totally trivial note, I'd also love to hear a bit more the short-lived, "Fruitman" comic from the sixites?

While this book might not be for everyone. It's essential to comic book historians who need to know there was more to to the industry that just superheroes and Disney. Invaluable alone for the Sad Sack material.

Sincerely,

James Smith III

Is it too self-serving to review my own book? I think not. I just wanted to let you know that I am really excited about this as my goal for a number of years was to publish a book. I know that everyone is not necessarily a comic book fan and especially not a Harvey Comics fan, but if you are, please give this a read. I have worked on this book over a 16 year period, and am very proud of the results. Also, please let me know what you think by posting your own review here.

When I wrote this review, Mark Arnold, editor of this book, had the only other review of it. But I'm glad he reviewed his own book, which he may have been somewhat hesitant to do, because he certainly made me want to read it (along with the blurb from Scott Shaw! an astounding artist whose work I have followed for a long time). Arnold has, as they say, some chops for writing this book, as he for some sixteen years has edited a Harvey Comics fanzine, The Harveyville Fun Times. This book is called The Best of the Harveyville Fun Times because that's what it is: a whopping 11 X 8 color cover paperback weighing in at nearly 400 pages of reprints of the THFT.

At first I felt a bit ripped off since, had one been a long time subscriber, one would already have all these issues. But then I thought, "Why go to the trouble to rewrite the whole book from the fanzines rather than just reprinting them? Obviously Mark had the same idea. Great minds think alike, and so do we.

This is the best sort of browsing book, jammed with about a zillion pictures as well as Harvey trivia approached from every angle. Who knew Jerry Lewis did Sad Sack movies? Where did my favorite Harvey comic star, Hot Stuff, come from? What's the relation of the Famous/ Paramount cartoons to the comics?

I myself eagerly await each issue of a Little Lulu fanzine called The Hollywood EcLLectern, and I can't think of anything better than if all those issues were bound together in a book. What a happy thought that Mark Arnold has been there and done that with the big H comics, and even better that I can kick back with this enthralling volume and another H (Hefeweisen) and delve into the Harvey Fun Times.

As did Philip Johson before him, Warren Johns brings all his lawyerly skills to bear on one of the greatest deceptions in the modern era. He's a man who obviously knows the topic, has studied the topic, and covers it well. It will be fascinating to see how evolutionists will try and answer this (my guess is that will try and ignore it because they'll have to).

It's great to see another voice rising, part of the growing tide, of those intellectuals (contrary to Richard Dawkin's assertions that anyone who doesn't believe in evolution is stupid, or something like that) who can see through the rhetoric in the evolution debate.

Well-written, well-reasoned out, this book ought to be read more folks than who will probably end up reading it. But it's great it's out there and can, I hope, only inspire those who read it to tell others about it.

A good Evo-Creationism first-read

Doctrinaire evolution, really seriously doctrinaire evolution of the sort that is flunking or firing or suing disbelievers nowadays, is kind of funny, actually. It's got to the point where I don't debate it any more, just chuckle, as I do on a web site edited by Warren Johns. But Johns is a lawyer and he debates, as he does so adroitly in his new book, "Beyond Tomorrow". As exasperated as amused, Johns is passionate about the whole business, and undertakes in his own entertaining as well as informative style to comprehensively review the many Evo issues both scientific and philosophical, some quite familiar and some not so. Among the flurry of new books out there, bursting from so many presses and think tanks and Big Institutes, this one, unashamedly creationist in outlook, would be especially good as a first-read for anybody without a deep scientific background or not already fossilized opinion on Evo.

Beyond Forever was written by Warren Johns, a career attorney, whose purpose in writing the book was to thoroughly examine the very foundational evidences for evolution. Much in the way a lawyer would present information to a jury, the author step by step presents the evidences used to support the concept of molecule to man evolution. He is able here to clearly show the shortcomings of so called evolutionary "science." Dealing with issues ranging from the variability of the genome and the origin of life, to the Big Bang and intelligent design, evolution as a viable concept is dismantled.
In this book are found many, many quotes from the scientists themselves. In this way the author is able to "use their own words against them," so to speak. Particularly enlightening was the chapter on Charles Darwin himself. There you find that Darwin recognized that "my speculations run beyond the bounds of science." It's curious that today's scientists do not see that evolution is ultimately a faith based belief system, and it is indeed beyond the bounds of science.
In the introduction Mr. Johns states, "A doctorate in jurisprudence does not equate with a degree in microbiology." In that regard I feel that he sells himself a little short. His grasp of very technical scientific issues exceeds that of many of the scientists I have encountered.
I feel that this will be an important book for those wishing to better understand the issues being dealt with in the creation/evolution debate. I commend Mr. Johns for his diligence in the preparation of this work.

Solid Advice for Bible Study Teachers

I was pleasantly surprised to find this book, The Bible Study Teachers Guide, by Beverly Van Kampen. I have been teaching adult bible study on Sunday mornings now for several years. But for the most part, my teaching style and methods have been derived from teaching economics to college students or from my experience in public speaking, not formal study or my work in the church. For me at least, this book fills a void.

Van Kampen is a Christian writer and a Sunday school teacher, but not a Christian educator. She recognizes this blind spot in her own background and fills it with interviews with other experienced college and church Christian educators. Bravo! Her use of the case study approach is innovative and it gives her book depth.

Two points stick out in my mind from reading the book. First, I never considered myself called to teach Bible study. Her discussion of the call was refreshing and it spoke to me personally. Her presentation convinced me that teaching is more than a transitional activity. Second, Van Kampen made a serious point about getting to know your student, both in class and out, for the purpose of facilitating transform. Again--bravo! I have always felt that spiritual development was a goal. For me the question remains how to do it best. Van Kampen provides helpful guidance.

I recommend this book to anyone who is passionate about teaching Bible study.

Author Beverly Van Kampen has assembled an impressive group of master Bible teachers to share their thoughts during the writing of this book though she herself has an impressive resume. But isn't that part of what teaching is about? A good teacher pulls together material from his or her own experiences and research then mixes in the wisdom of others. And that is exactly what Van Kampen has done in this expertly crafted work. Woven throughout the text are the thoughts of such noted Bible teachers as Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe, Dr. Edwin Lutzer, Dr. Ravi Zacharias and many others. Both new and experienced Bible teachers will gain much from this work including: How to prepare themselves to give the message, how to prepare and present the message, how to connect with students, the keys to leading good discussions and even a guide for one-to-one mentoring. This book is highly recommended for those who are already teachers or discusion leaders and for those who are new to teaching or simply considering whether they have the gifts to teach.

An astonishing book! The author weaves you in and around this story like a jack rabbit on speed! A truly fascinating account of what could potentially happen if someone breaks through security in the world of electronic banking. Give it a whirl...you won't be disappointed!

It does for consulting what Dan Quayle did for the VP!

What a page turner -- I got so far behind on my work I had to call in sick. If The Big Casino were any longer, I'd have to quit my job.

Having been a consultant and a banker, this book was terrific. It poked fun while still proving a suspense-filled, page-turning rollicking good ride. I couldn't put it down, even though it distracted me from doing the dishes, doing laundry, paying bills, making my bed..... Luckily, it is written so well that I could read it pretty quickly.

Think John Grisham, Tom Clancy and the like. You don't have to be a consultant or a banker to appreciate this book.

I highly recommend it.

I read this book for an oral history class and loved it. I read the entire portrait series but this book and Claude were my favorites. i never got through the other two. I liked this book above Claude because of Brother Blue. His personality is all over this book and I would love someday to meet him. After reading this, I feel like I know him. This is one of those books that really draws you in with it's straightforward honesty and realness. I love the reality of this man who just feels like a real person to me. Definately a great book.

Brother Blue's Story-telling is MATCHLESS!

Anyone and everyone will come away from this story-telling masterpiece with a bit of wisdom to keep and share... "The second chance," for instance, is a mordant narrative of a downtrodden black family and its caring but hopeless father-figure who is willing to do the ultimate sacrifice to see his family pull through the Great Depression. More importantly it is the crucial point in a young boy's life: Brother Blue's life as an eight year old boy forced to become his "father's father" in a life-and-death situation... Equally beautiful is the artistry that Warren Lehrer has put to work in crafting a book that is itself an aesthetic and typographical work of art...In conjunction with a powerful and moving 80+minutes cassette reading of the book by Brother Blue himself, this book is a gem. Wonderful , packed with hope and wisdom!

I know Brother Blue well, and must say, this book captures him. The layout of the language (wandering over the page, exuberant, lyrical) echoes his words, rhythms, and movement far more eloquently than I ever thought a written genre could. I am very impressed with this work, and recommend it to anyone interested in modern poetry, storytelling, and sheer passion for an artform. Be prepared to be challenged. Parents should review some of the content before sharing it with younger kids.
