I Love to Read This Music! I Got the Lyrics Down!
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-25
This particular songbook has the sheet music to my most favorite song in the show, "She Loves To Hear the Music," of which I have been looking for ever since I started listening to the Original Broadway Cast Recording in November, as I want to sing this at one point.
When I saw "The Boy From Oz" in April, I rejoiced to find that the Souvenir Stand was selling this!!! YAY!!!
This has ALL but 3 of the songs on the OBC Recording, and then some: All the Lives of Me; When I Get My Name in Lights; Love Crazy; Best That You Can Do - Arthur's Theme; Don't Wish Too Hard; Continental American; She Loves to Hear the Music; Quiet Please, There's a Lady On Stage; I'd Rather Leave While I'm In Love; Not the Boy Next Door; Bi-Coastal; If You Were Wondering; Everything Old Is New Again; Love Don't Need a Reason; I Honestly Love You; You and Me; I Still Call Australia Home; Don't Cry Out Loud; I Go To Rio; (and) Tenterfield Saddler. The 2 songs that are not on Broadway are the following: Sure Thing, Baby; and Waltzing Matilda...
I also have the other Vocal Selection book, which is equally great, and has 3 songs that this one does not have, such as: Come Save Me; Only An Older Woman; and last but not least, Once Before I Go... "'If you were wondering'" you will want to get both songbooks! Thanks, and "come on and get happy!"

Intense read!

As a devoted Diane Chamberlain fan, I have read every one of her novels. This one was particulary intense and compelling. Diane deals realistically with the fallout from sexual abuse and survivor guilt. Sisters Claire and Vanessa share sharply different memories of summers spent with their grandfather, who was in the process of restoring an antique carousel. Claire has nothing but happy memories of lazy summer days spent with her beloved grandfather. Vanessa, after overcoming drug and alcohol addiction has become an activist for molested children. Claire does not understand why her sister Vanessa will have nothing to do with her.

Claire is witness to a suicide that triggers flashbacks that she doesn't understand. With the help of the victim's brother, she uncovers the terrible truth about her grandfather and her perceived role in her sister's trauma.

Claire's struggle to come to grips with her memories, her guilt, and her attempts to make amends with her sister will touch the hearts of anyone who hold themselves responsible for causing unspeakable pain to someone they truly love.

Highly recommeneded!

"A Brave New Quest: 100 Modern Turkish Poems" is a beautiful , rare jewel . Illuminate by a sapphire blue with white, flame and peacock cover photographed detail from Iznik tile in the Rutwem Pasha Mosque, in Istanbul, this is the only anthology of modern Turkish poetry translated into English. Coming from a nation where virtually everyone is a poet, the anthology contains a vibrant, varied and sophisticated sampling of modern Turkish poetry. Here you will find poems about fear, death, love, nature, change, bewilderment of the senses, transfiguration, cruelty and social injustice, pain, hope, laughter, tears, joy and despair, and above all passionate longing. Poets whose work are included in this translation include Nazim Hikmet, Fazil Husnu Daglarca,Orhan Veli Kanik, Behdet Necatigil, Attila Ilhan, Melih Cevdet Anday, Edip Cansever, Ece Ayhan, Kemal Ozer, Ulku Tamer, and so many more. Each poetic work is selected and translated with loving care for the fine imagery, the lyrical syllables even in English. Editor Talat S. Halman has many starry credentials to explain the fine workmanship in "A Brave New Quest." Besides being a leading translator of Turkish literature and many books about modern Turkish playwrights and poets, he is an award winning avatar for Turkish culture and literature. Besides translating major works of English into Turkish and vice versa, he is an accomplished playwright, poet, and writer. Awards he has received include Columbia University's Thornton Wilder Translation Prize, the 1999 Service Award from the Turkish Academy of Sciences for enhancing the recognition of Turkish literature, and the Distinguished Service Award from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2000. His offering in "A Brave New Quest" seems equivalent to a prism that allows the rainbow of beauty and complexity of modern Turkish poetry to sing, quietly, to an English speaking audience. It is very difficult to select a quotation from such a fine collection, but here is one choice from a poem called (untitled) by Nazim Hikmet:

Let us give the world to the children at least for one day
Let them play with it as if it's a spangled balloon
Let them sing and dance among the stars

Let us give the world to the children
Like a huge apple or a warm loaf of bread
at least for one day
so that they'll have enough to eat

Let us give the world to the children
so that even if it's for one day
it will learn what friendship is

The children will take the world
out of our hands
and they will plant immortal trees. (p. 20)

Here is yet another fragment, the sixth definition of poetry from fifteen in a from a poem entitled "Responses for Poetry" by Ulku Tamer:
Poetry is the drinking bucket's fountain
the well's traveler.

It is the guard at the source (p. 160).

"A Brave New Quest: 100 Modern Turkish Poems" will enthrall, entice, and enlighten its lucky readers. May its copies fly off the shelves into the hands of those who truly appreciate what poetry has to offer.

I am not a drumset player (Yet !) but I'm interested in the rhythms of the world and Brazilian Rhythms are Fantastic, this book is quite good, it has sections on Samba, Bossa Nova, Baiao, Maracatu, Marca and Frevo, and patterns in odd meters.

The book starts with a short introduction on Brazilian music and then explaines the traditional Rhythms and the traditional Brazilian instruments and then demonstrates how to apply those rhythms to the drumset, the book comes with two C.D's which demonstrated most of the musical samples in the book.

Great book for drumset players and ALSO for those who want to understand Brazilian Rhythms.

Also recomended are Airto Moreiras great Videos, C,D's and books, and see also Brazilian Percussion Manual by Daniel Sabanovich and Brazilan Music Workshop by Antonio Adolfo.

For other types of rhythms check out these authors, Alan Dworsky, Reinhart Flatichler, Sule Greg Vilson, Yaya Diallo, Peter Magadini, Robert Starer and Gary Hess.

Lovely watercolor illustrations compliment the fresh ideas from author Rick Rodgers. Careful, detailed instructions help the even the novice host plan and execute the perfect tea party baby shower. Only downside: food is heavily gourmet, may need to be toned down a bit for those with less adventurous palates. Well worth the price.

a bridge too far by cornelius ryan tells me things we, living in Amsteram, heard rumors about that we hoped were true. Gripping and chilling facts that are gruesome. We started the "hunger winter" while so many lives were being sacrificed that we might be free. The many interviews with those who participated makes for fine reading. Well written and a must for all young people lest we forget.

You can sit there and analyse the whole book from a literary & gramatical point of view to death... but some books simply touch us deep inside. They seem to shake our emotions and somehow we connect... maybe we all wish we had a story to tell!

Totally recomend it if anyone wants to read a book that is short and sweet!

Its a great book, very emotional so prepare yourself for tears. The movie is fab too.

The Brink

Review Date: 2007-07-23
Admiral Daniel V. Gallery earned himself a special place in the annals of naval history when he captured a German submarine in 1944. The U-505, the first enemy warship taken by the United States since 1815, is on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, dedicated as a memorial to all who lost their lives defending this country at sea.

Although he retired from the Navy in 1960, Admiral Gallery is still pursuing his second highly successful career -- as an author. Since World War II he's published dozens of articles and stories, two paperback originals and five books, which include Stand By To Start Engines. 8 Bells And All's Well, and Now Hear This.

The Brink is fiction. Some terrible tomorrow it could become fact, just the way it happens here...

In the icy gray reaches of the Polar Seas an American nuclear submarine confronts a Russian destroyer. There are feints and dodges; ominous maneuvers above and below the polar ice cap. And then, in one searing second, a ship is atomized into a cloud of radioactive debris...

In Washington, as the maneuvers become political and the stakes astronomical, men in high places must carefully assess their public images, their personal loyalties, their private ethics. These men will decide the fate of a world teetering on the brink...

This is a frightening, suspenseful novel, full of the lore of modern naval warfare and the intricacies of modern world politics, all underscored by emotions as old as man himself.

"The Brink makes The Bedford Incident, Red Alert and Fail Safe take a back seat for its ability to engross the reader in the dangerous dilemma of mutual nuclear holocaust." -- Library Journal

"Admiral Gallery takes you into the control room of the USS Nemo on station a hundred fathoms beneath the surface of the Norwegian Sea and you're there... the only reason you are glad to come to the end of the book is that you do find out that you have not yet been blown to smithereens."-- Shipmate

"Much salty talk, a great deal of action and suspense--not a dull page." -- Toledo Sunday Blade

"A humdinger, a cliff-hanger which most people will find difficult to put down unfinished." -- Army Times

"Powerful... a book you will want to read without interruption." -- Sacramento Bee
