Admiral Daniel V. Gallery earned himself a special place in the annals of naval history when he captured a German submarine in 1944. The U-505, the first enemy warship taken by the United States since 1815, is on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, dedicated as a memorial to all who lost their lives defending this country at sea.
Although he retired from the Navy in 1960, Admiral Gallery is still pursuing his second highly successful career -- as an author. Since World War II he's published dozens of articles and stories, two paperback originals and five books, which include Stand By To Start Engines. 8 Bells And All's Well, and Now Hear This.
The Brink is fiction. Some terrible tomorrow it could become fact, just the way it happens here...
In the icy gray reaches of the Polar Seas an American nuclear submarine confronts a Russian destroyer. There are feints and dodges; ominous maneuvers above and below the polar ice cap. And then, in one searing second, a ship is atomized into a cloud of radioactive debris...
In Washington, as the maneuvers become political and the stakes astronomical, men in high places must carefully assess their public images, their personal loyalties, their private ethics. These men will decide the fate of a world teetering on the brink...
This is a frightening, suspenseful novel, full of the lore of modern naval warfare and the intricacies of modern world politics, all underscored by emotions as old as man himself.
"The Brink makes The Bedford Incident, Red Alert and Fail Safe take a back seat for its ability to engross the reader in the dangerous dilemma of mutual nuclear holocaust." -- Library Journal
"Admiral Gallery takes you into the control room of the USS Nemo on station a hundred fathoms beneath the surface of the Norwegian Sea and you're there... the only reason you are glad to come to the end of the book is that you do find out that you have not yet been blown to smithereens."-- Shipmate
"Much salty talk, a great deal of action and suspense -- not a dull page." -- Toledo Sunday Blade
"A humdinger, a cliff-hanger which most people will find difficult to put down unfinished." -- Army Times
"Powerful... a book you will want to read without interruption." -- Sacramento Bee

This book captures the history behind Bugs Bunny and all of the other Warner Bros. characters. It provides interesting information on how and why these horrorshow cartoons were made. A few in-depth sections may bore the average reader, but for the most part, the book is filled with intersting tales of car wax.

This is the first in the Toby Peters books and it is excellent. And, the Blackstone Audio Books version is both well read and faithful to the original book. The breaks on the cassettes are handy. Do yourself a favor and check out the later titles Blackstone offers. You'll be glad.

I can't believe there are no reviews of this delightful tome. Although it's not indispensable to the enjoyment of the Chronicles themselves, it's actually enjoyable as read-by-itself item. Anyhow, how can anyone fail to want this delightful book after reading through 20 chronicles and one prequel! One's library would not be complete without it. It's full of wonderful "chronicle" information as well as historical information; it answers questions you didn't even think to ask. ONE CAUTIONARY REMARK: Whiteman does "give away" some of the endings in his explanation of who's who, what's what, and where's where; therefore, it's not suitable for looking things up while one is actually in the midst of one of Brother Cadfael's investigations. Otherwise, get it, read it, enjoy it!
