The story of Theodore Aloysius Huxtable and his portrayer
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-16
Here is the story of Brooklyn,New York resident Theodore Aloysius Huxtable and his portrayer,Jersey City,New Jersey-born Malcolm Jamal Warner. How about that? MJW was probably inspired by his Cosby Show dad Bill Cosby to compose this awesome literature. Those who read/own this book also read/own Cosby's literary pieces such as TIME FLIES,FATHERHOOD,LOVE & MARRIAGE,COSBYOLOGY and the Little Bill series. This book was released around summer 1988. I know because MJW appeared on the cover of the August 29,1988 issue of Jet and it mentioned the book. MJW was named after the African-American figure Malcolm X and jazz pianist Ahmed Jamal. MJW may be an only child,he may have one or more siblings. Cosby Show fans know Theo's four sisters, from oldest to youngest,Sondra,Denise,Vanessa and Rudith, the latter commobly known as Rudy. Fans also know Theo's parents Heathcliff,a obstetrician/pediatrician/gynecologist commonly known as Cliff and Clair,a no-crap legal aid attorney. Theo's first long-term girlfriend Justine Phillips' portrayer, now deceased, was once MJW's real-life girlfriend. Theo was born in 1970 as MJW. Theo was inspired by Cosby's real-life now-deceased son(Cosby himself is married with four daughters also). I'm sure there's a real Theodore Aloysius Huxtable somewhere in the world. If there is,Cosby and his Cosby Show co-creators Ed Weinberger and Michael Leeson know him.

M. J. Warner could not have written a more accurate description of teenage life, if he had written it himself, as a teenager. The letters he received as Theo touch upon the hardest aspects of being a teenager: Pregnancy, Teen Pregnancy, Sex, Death of a Loved One, Love, and Teen Sex. These are the insurmountable tests every teen must face, unless they live in Somalia. Then they have a different set of tests. Most with Lions and Ak-47's. It is probably terribly hard to be a teenager in Somalia.

This book is my all time favourite, not just because its the first of its kind that i read when i was younger, but because i learned to fully apprieciate the writing at a younge age.
It has a slow start but after about a chapter it engulfs you totally in to its world or dimmension. The Structure is excellent with dips and quick changes from differnt stories that eventually become tied up together for a warm, happy yet strange ending. I have read and re-read this book several times, and will do many more times in the future : )

An engaging look into the landed Protestant gentry of New Jersey horse country and their struggle to find meaning in the post-Vietnam era. The characters are lively and Simpson's writing style is reminiscent of John O'Hara at his early best. Understated melodrama and an eye for detail in the dissolving world of WASP culture make this novel a must read for anyone interested in the fading of America's humble aristocracy.

Reading this author is as if you're watching a movie!

Nobody in a long time has written so obviously with the reader in mind. Each character and scene creates an incredible sequence of events. Simpson is definitely unique as a storyteller. Highly recommended reading.

The book Thorns & Thrones is a wonderful help for any person who ministers to others in a difficult time of need. It also gives insights and comforts to the sometimes daily stuggles of life. Jesus travels with us through the thorns of life and brings us to His throne chamber where we find peace and reassurance. An excellent book and must be reprinted.

A must-have for every Parish Nurse and Stephen Minister!

I wish this book would be re-printed. Hoff presents many life trials in short prose or poetry; she includes a prayer and scripture with each trial. Thorns and Thrones addresses spiritual and emotional needs (THORNS)and answers (THRONES). I have used this book in ministry to the lonely, the elderly, the dying, those who are discouraged, fearful, chronicaly ill, and those who are grieving.

Well worth reading, even though my edition stopped just before Blair's first election as PM. The author didn't write it for Americans -- I had to guess at a lot of the British electoral and political terminology -- but he seems to have a subtle and sophisticated sense of politicians and the UK electorate from the 1970s to mid-1990s. One big surprise was the extent to which the Blairites intentionally copied themes from the 1992 Clinton campaign. Whether that makes you smile or grimace no doubt depends on your opinion of New Democrats.

Balanced and fair: Amazing!

As a "Blairite" (I can feel prejudices leaping into life even as I type), I was expecting this book to jump on the bandwagon of New Labour bashing, as it just isn't the done thing to give the current government credit for anything. I was therefore pleasantly surprised to discover that this biography is astonishingly well balanced. TB's sincerity and achievements are given due recognition, while the author at the samw time paints a portrait of a driven man, who has expertly used the machinery of politics to his advantage, utilising all sorts of arguably cynical plotting and dancing through a myriad morally grey areas. You will almost certianly take from this book what you bring to it. If you feel that Tony Blair has been a good PM, and person in general, then Mr. Rentoul's willingness to showcase Labour's progressive measures will reassure you of the tangible effect he has has on the country. If you feel that New Labour hasn't delivered, that it's "all spin and no delivery" (oh, how I hate that phrase!), or that he sold socialism down the river, then you'll also find enough evidence to justify your complaints. The bbok itself is well written, packed with insight, and superbly backed up with the relevant quotes and a thorough list of references. If you have any interest in modern British politics, you'll like this.

Every Card for Every Year!

Review Date: 2008-05-26
This book shows the front side of every Topps baseball card that was created from their inception in 1951 through 1990, when the book was published. It also includes the "Traded Series" for those players drafted or traded during said year. Each year has a section of what happened in the season during said year, and has a quiz. The quiz asks a question, and the answer is told in the form of a number, which correlates to a specific players card number for that year. This book is a joy to have, especially at looking into the past and seeing the players of yesteryear. The book is heavy, as it is almost 11 pounds, but it is well worth it!

Excellent View of all Topps Baseball Cards Presented Yearly of each cards front face reduced to approx. 20% of the actual size on nice premium glosy thick paper. Hoping that someday maybe the size (larger) and back side of each card can be made in the same format. For now the next best thing to actually owning the entire collection which (Depending of course on condtion) could cost approx. half million dollars. An excellent gift for any baseball card fan of years gone by to re-live there child-hood memories in this massive volume weighting more than 10-lbs.

This book is a must for anyone interested in American folksongs. It ranks right up there with the Lomax, Beldon, Hunter, and Randolph collections. It may be hard to find, and a bit pricey, but well worth the effort. I'd give it ten stars if the rating would go that high. You will enjoy this collection.

You may go to this book to find out about the Warner's fascinating song-collecting trips begun in western North Carolina in 1938 and lasting into the 1960s, but you'll find an amazing repertoire of songs waiting to be sung.

Tom Dooley is the song Frank Proffitt sang to the Warners long ago. The Kingston Trio heard Frank Warner sing it in the 1950s and made it their signature song. But it is only one of hundreds of songs that the world is waiting to hear.

Read the words of rural America in the voice of Lee Monroe Presnell, Yankee John Galusha or Grammy Fish. These are singers the Lomaxes would have spent a lot of tape on.

The songs themselves would be enough, but this is a book full of Anne Warner's scholarship and thoughtful treatment of her subject. Frank Warner's photographs will take you to a far off place.
