This book is a spellbinder which will keep your interest from the beginning to the end. If you read and liked the Martin Limon books about the military CID in Korea, such as the Slicky Boys, Jade Lady Burning and Buddha's Money, this fits like a hand in glove. Very enjoyable.

**** For you Bob Warner fans -- I just received notice that Bob passed away in early April 2004 ******
My internal magnet sends me to books about Korea. After "finding" the book, I bought it and started to read it when I had lots of other things to do. I read it from beginning to end in one weekend. As I read this can't-put-it-down novel, I was sure I knew the culprit six times. Six times I was wrong. Like all good mysteries, when the author reveals the "bad guy," we tell ourselves, "I knew that." --- I did not. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would encourage anyone who loves a good mystery to read it NOW!

Challenge and insight from the definitive modern clarinetist
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-11
Anyone who has been paying attention to jazz during the past 20 years knows that Eddie Daniels has given new life to the clarinet, rescuing it from perceptions that its place in popular music was restricted to the big band era and dixieland. Eddie's career has spanned more than 40 years of virtuosity in all manner of jazz and classical ensembles, in concert performances and studio recordings.
This well-chosen assortment of transcriptions of some of his best work is a treasure, so clarinetists owe a debt of gratitude to Miles Osland for taking on the enormous task. But it's not for the faint-hearted or slow-fingered. Those who know Eddie's work are aware that he's fast, clean, and can soar to the top notes of the instrument in a seemingly effortless manner. Listening to the included CD while following along with the transcriptions is important to the learning process, because no musical notation can completely capture the way Eddie articulates or the way he often lays back in moving passages. His audio commentary and brief solo demonstrations are also very valuable.
The book contains 14 transcribed solos from eight of Eddie's albums recorded between 1986 and 2000. If you don't have these albums already, you'll want to get them once you hear - and play - this material.

See and hear the work of one of the all time great musicians!

Eddie Daniels is one of THE great musicians- a rare combination of a beautiful classical player with a wonderful range of sounds and styles, and amazing jazz improvisor with an equally wide range of sounds and emotions.

This book features some fantastic soloing, and all musicians (not only clarentists) can gain from this book by listening to and learning how these solos are constructed. The ideas, development, rhythmic and harmonic choices are all incredible. Miles Osland did some fine transcription work, and the companion CD has not only the solos, but some great commentary from Eddie.

Serious high level music that is a joy to hear.

I first read this book about 20 years ago and fell in love for the first time. The writing was so well done, that at the age of 12 I felt the pain Sophie and James went through when the war separated them. Theirs was a sweet, tender love that didn't yet know the destruction war brings. The love that Carl and Pia found later in the book, is a different one. It hurts to read about the disillusion and indiference Carl feels, knowing who he was once upon a time. This is a book not only worth reading, but definately worth keeping!!

WWI. R.T. Stevens tells this stirring story, which does not dwell on the battles in the war, but on the people affected by it. I have read it many times and because of it I have read more of Stevens's books, which focus primarily on WWI. His stories paint a beautifully realistic portrait of a world lost.

My Story, is the first autobiography Uri Geller ever wrote is fascinating, shocking and mind provoking. He tries to explain his paranormal powers and refutes false claims of New Scientist magazine. They claimed he had a miniature radio implantd in his teeth. What a wild story! Then follow up by reading Jonathan Margolis new autobiography Magician or Mystic?

An Autobiography of an honest, loving caring genius.

Uri Geller became a household name to many people when he became famous on TV and in the media for the showmanship which came so natural to him. He taught many people over the air waves, while sitting in their homes, to bend spoons, and other mind over matter feats. there are many news and magazine articles covering these shows.

The story that is less known is the research he volunteered to participate in under strict laboratory protocol at Stanford University's Stanford Research Institute. The research findings of Dr. Andriha Puharich, an experienced parapsychologist, who spent considerable time effort and capital to investigate his activites under close scrutiny are also not as well known. (See also: Andriha Puharich: "Uri"). His contacts with beings of a more advanced civilization(ships) are detailed both in his and Dr Puharich's book. There were multiple witnesses to many of his activities including these.

Do not read this book unless you are ready to expand your mind.

He wiil convince you that besides all his other talents, he is also a great writer.

Although I sometimes wonder how much of the book is fiction, I think the book is an incredible blend of Rubenstein's personal life with his public career. I literally could not put the book down. The book allowed me to put a personal life with the public figure and recordings that I have of him.

Rubenstein has a very flowing, easy-to-read writing style and includes details that made me feel like I actually met him and the people he knew. Like all great autobiographies that I read, this one made me want to know what happened to some of the people he met.

I was **very** disappointed when I finished the book and yearned for more information about his life. It was only when I came across the title on Amazon.com that I found he wrote another autobiography. I can't wait to buy it.

I first read the book when I was in college in about 1974. I couldn't put the book down. At the time Rubenstein was the greatest in my mind. I later bought a copy of the book at a used book store in Sonoma Valley.

I can't believe I'm the FIRST to review this book!

Terrific -- and it sounds like it really was written by Arthur (Artur?) himself. It's almost diary-like in its detail, and everything is fascinating. We get a lot of juicy personal stuff, including love-life stuff and, on the other side of the coin, his young failed attempt at suicide. My own favorite part of the book is his very detailed reminiscence of the piano competition that he entered, and LOST; what's interesting is how this great, beloved, infinitely-accomplished pianist and man-of-the-world apparently never lost his hurt and bitterness over this stupid competition -- kind of like if Derek Jeter or Barry Bonds went on and on about the time they got shafted by an umpire in Little League. I don't mean this as a criticism of him; if anything, the opposite -- it's an example of how much he was just like the rest of us, which probably was a big part of why we loved him so much.

The Aldens and Mrs. McGregor on vacation together

Review Date: 2001-07-18
As the book opens, Mrs. McGregor is not feeling like herself. So the Alden children, Henry, Jessie, Violet & Benny tried to cheer her up. Mrs, McGregor's child home might be sold, which I guess it's supposed to be an inn. Mrs. McGregor's sister lives there. In fact, Mrs. McGregor had a mystery lady visited her at her house when she was a child. But Mrs. McGregor nevered find out her name.

The children's grandfather droves them and Mrs. McGregor to her house. Mrs. McGregor's sister doesn't believe that there is a treasure in the house. Her name is Madeline. Benny had remembered in the car that he forgot a book called The Alphabet Mystery by his favorite author Amelia Quigley Adams. It turns out that Mrs. McGregor was aslo a Amelia Quigley Adams fan. And has her books at the crooked house (Mrs. McGregor's house). There is a guest that is staying there too but she isn't very nice. But the Alden children didn't think they would find a mystery. This is a must read for Boxcar Children fans.

The Boxcar Children- Mai Yia's Review

Review Date: 2001-02-09
I think the BOXCAR CHILDREN is extremely fun to read. It tells about adventurous kids who are running away from their grandfather. While running away they had many adventures. The four kid's names are: Henry, a boy who is strong and is the oldest, Jessie, a girl who is adventurous and knows how to cook excellent food, Violet a 10 year old girl who is smart, and Benny, the youngest, well mannered, and funny boy. Henry worked for a man named Dr. Moore because he wanted to make money to buy food to eat. He also worked for Dr. Moore so that he could support his siblings. These kids are very creative. I really like this book. I think everyone should read this book because you could learn something. It is a good bedtime story too because, you could have wonderful dreams instead of scary nightmares. I give this book 5 stars.

This book is a mysterious and scary book. The Mystery of the Singing Ghost is a wonderful book. It is about a house that people think is haunted but the Aldens want to prove it is not. So they stay for a couple of weeks. It sounds and looks like there is a ghost in the house. You will have to find the rest out by yourself.
The message the author wants to send is that you should never lie.
My opinion of the story is that it is amazing.I loved it. The kind of readers that would like thebook are people that like mystery stories.
Gertude Chandler Warner is a wonderful writer.

Naked is a laugh out loud collection of autobiographical short-stories, and happens to be my favorite of all his books. Naked is most enjoyable in audiobook form due to the narration by the author. Sedaris gained national attention after reading his essays on NPR. His understatedly dramatic readings compelled him to fame, and hearing the author read his own writing is a true treat. Sedaris' inflections and voice imitations further amplify his cast of already quirky characters.

His eccentric family and sardonic outlook on life will keep you laughing from start to finish. Nothing escapes Sedaris' sarcastic eye as he shreds apart his banal existence in the Southern suburbs of Charlotte. Highlights of the book include the title story on visiting a rural nudist colony, and "plague of ticks" which shows how he coped, or rather hit himself repeatedly in the head with his own shoes and obsessively licked light switches, as a child with OCD.

My only criticism would be the inclusion of Amy Sedaris (comedian, actress, and the author's sister) in the book's narration. In many of the stories she narrates the voices of the female characters, and her voice seems pasted in and awkwardly breaks the narrative flow. She also sounds exactly the same for most of the multiple characters she portrays and one gets tired of her forced and overly youthful Southern accent.
