The Original & Best! (and it's not Corn Flakes)Review Date: 2001-02-08
1. Liquid: talks (sings, actually) about Christ's sacrifice for us, and how "He didn't die for nothing." I liked all the instruments in the background, too.
2. Sinking: about how we can try to convince ourselves that we don't need God; that we're fine on our own. But then it goes into how God sees through our lies and we should turn to Him for healing.
3. Love Song For a Savior: my favorite! The title is pretty self-explanatory, I think. It's a beautiful song about coming closer to God; and how much He loves us.
4. Like a Child: another favorite! This one's about how if we have faith like a child, we can move mountains!
5. Art in Me: external looks and/or occupations shouldn't be judged, according to this song. It talks about how Christ sees "the art" in all of us, and wants us to do the same to others.
6. He: this song was kind of sad. It talks about a guy who is hurting because of the rotten things he's done, and wants to hide from God. Also, his parents are abusive and non-supportive, and wants to hide from them. But God holds His children, even this guy, in His hands.
7. Boy on a String: about being ourselves and becoming the man/woman that God wants us to be; not just going along with the crowd and being like a puppet, doing what others want you to.
8. Flood: talks of a great "flood" and how we can't swim all forty days without Christ. He lifts us when we fall, and saves us from "drowning" in our confusion; He'll hold us when we need it.
9. Worlds Apart: about how what we think we need and what we believe are "worlds apart."
10. Blind: talks about how our cynical, doubting selves blind us from God and His redemption; saying "blind words you call; blind words will fall."

Outstanding ResourceReview Date: 2006-03-19
by J. Richard Dunscomb is an outstanding resource for new music teachers and experienced professionals as well. It contains detailed well thought out articles by leading jazz educators in their fields of expertise...clearly outlined and easily understood examples descriptions. A must have guide for learning or for remebering things you already knew but needed a fresh perspective.
Book is for band directors but ensemble members will gain insight.Review Date: 2007-01-13
The book does a good job of presenting jazz in a methodical way. It starts with jazz history and influential players. It then moves on to the development of jazz instrumentation and jazz styles. As to not overwhelm the novice, a blues tunes, "Billie's Bounce", is used as a starting point. Helpful pointers like scales, modes, and arpeggios are explained and written out. Since classical musicians will only be familiar with standard grand staff notation and unfamiliar with simplified jazz charts, time is taken to explain the anatomy of a chart. The book's expensive but one you'll keep in the library for reference, especially if you plan on being a jazz band director. Also, as a supplemental addition, get "Approaching The Standards" by the same author to practice what you've learned here.

AMAZING TUNA RECIPES GOOD ENOUGH FOR COMPANY!Review Date: 2004-11-09
I recently bought Joie's Take a Tin of Tuna and like her other cookbooks, her recipes are simple to prepare, always turn out perfectly and taste wonderful. The book has lots of pretty pictures of yummy-looking soups, sandwiches, appetizers, and main dishes. I never knew there were so many ways to prepare tuna and how sophisticated this food item could be.
Now I'm cooking from her new tuna book and so far these are my favs,
1) tuna and sweet corn chowder--my husband and kids loved it!
2) tuna tapanade--friends dropped by and I made this instant tuna spread with ingredients I had in my cupboard.
3) tuna, lemon and caper crostini-- elegant and easy with great "wow" factor.
4) deep-fried tuna wontons--sounded weird, tried it, tasted fab.
5) tuna and bacon stuffed baked potatoes-- pure comfort food.
6) curried tuna and chutney salad with mango--awsome tuna salad.
7) tuna reuben sandwich--I think I like it better than the original with corned beef!
8) grilled eggplant, tuna and roasted red pepper panini--totally awesome sandwich.
9) classy tuna noodle casserole--simply fab. I served it to guests and they all wanted the recipe.
10) extra lemony tuna risotto--so good and easy I've made it 6 times already.
I can't wait to try the broccoli, cheddar and tuna chowder and the tuna stuffed red peppers.
My only tiny complaint is that in some of her recipes using olive oil, she discards the oil in the can instead of using it as part of the ingredients. I am quite a frugal person and I've recently discovered that I actually like the tuna flavored oil. So why not use it?
I did not understand Mr. Marold's tirade about dried parsley and basil. What I really love about this author's recipes is her bounteous use of fresh basil, parsley and chives.
I've read the book cover to cover and there isn't one recipe with dried parsley. And only one recipe--her tuna creole--uses dried basil, which FYI is traditional in Cajun and Creole food. (I know, cause I lived in Louisiana for ten years).Cajuns use lots of dried spices and herbs including dried basil--even garlic powder, as does my favorite Cajun cookbook by Chef Paul Prudhomme.
I give this book five stars. The first for offering truly inspired recipes for such a common ingredient. The second for originality (not the same old run-of-the-mill recipes) and practicality (these recipes I'll actually use). The third is for providing amazing canned tuna recipes that are actually good enough to serve to company. The fourth is for her helpful tuna tips and list of pantry items. I took the author's advice and now use tuna in olive oil, not the bland stuff in water I've been eating since childhood. The fifth star is for explaining that in places like Italy and Spain canned tuna is actually a `gourmet' item. Good news for canned tuna lovers. Finally we can come out of the closet!!!
Although there are only 65 recipes in this book, I judge a cookbook by the quality, not the quantity of recipes. Plus I love cookbooks with pictures of the finished dish, so I'll gladly pay a little extra. THIS BOOK IS WORTH EVERY PENNY! Thank you Joie Warner.
Excellent Recipes for Star Pantry Item. Highly RecommendedReview Date: 2004-10-13
Before I go any further, I must put in a plug for canned tuna. Like several other ingredients that have been available in a can for a very long time, this product has virtually taken on a life of its own, completely distinct from the cuisine and recipes based on fresh tuna. Like salt cod, it is not only accepted as a different product, it is actually better for many recipes than the fresh flesh, which is both highly perishable and requires a fair amount of subtlety to cook well. Even the highest authorities on French cooking give us Salad Nicoise made with canned tuna.
The first chapter in this book is the routine intro. on showing us around the varieties of canned tuna and itemizing good pantry items to have on hand to work with tuna. While this list, especially the first half, is better than most, it violates my standing rule about pantry lists in that it lists several relatively perishable items in the refrigerator and dried basil in the spice rack. I use lots of dried spices, but I would not use dried basil or parsley short of having a gun put to my head. Both are available fresh the year around and fresh parsley is usually dirt-cheap. I do respect the author's recommending selected national brands for bacon and mustard. I have seen good things said about her recommended products, but I have seen bad things said about them as well. Be very aware that in spite of the sense that it is virtually imperishable, please know that mustard looses its pizzazz after about three months in the bottle, so don't stockpile the stuff, especially the stuff shipped to us from France.
Among the recipes, you will find all the old standards such as Salade Nicoise, Tuna salad, and Tuna casserole, but you will find lots of other goodies as well. The first chapter of recipes is on starters with recipes for stuff such as tuna tapenade, tuna dips, tuna and caper spread, tuna wontons, and tuna tapas, for example. I think I will pass on the tuna fondue.
The second chapter of recipes gives us tuna coups and chowders where, among other things, we have tuna standing in for clams and keeping company with beans, corn, broccoli and cheddar, and tomatoes. I get strongly positive feelings about all these recipes. This may be worth the price of the book.
The third chapter of recipes covers sandwiches, the home of the classic tuna melt. The author does here what lots of recipe writers do in turning a recipe for a salad into a sandwich, with virtually no alterations except that the ingredients are plopped between two halves of crusty bread. Ms. Joie does this with a tuna nicoise sandwich, simply leaving out the potato salad which, I'm sure, you will be happy to find as the featured side dish.
The fourth chapter is the center ring for sure for the canned tuna show, as these are the salads, both classic and nuveo. The author essays tuna with lots of tomatoes, beans, curries, leafy veg, and Mexican themes. These recipes are more traditional than the soups, but swell to have all in one place.
The last chapter of recipes is largely all the things that do not fit in other categories. These are terrines, pies, omelets, and pizzas. Shades of Wolfgang Puck.
I regret that the author and her publisher did not see it fit to list the author's previously published titles. Either they are not from Chronicle Books or they are not considered worthy. I also find the $20 list price just a tad high for 65 recipes from a journeyman author.
Both of these nits are relatively trivial. This is a very good book for people both on a diet and on a budget and in serious need of some variety in their meals. If you can get it for less than $15, I say snap it up.
Highly recommended.
