The book was originally printed in 1984. It was used and in great condition. My friend was delighted to receive the book. It was actually the first book he used when he developed his interest in cooking. It was like reuniting two old friends. His favorite recipe is Osso Buco. My friend believes this to be one of the best cookbooks ever written. He now owns all of R. Carrier's cookbooks.

When a friend gave my 7-year-old son this book that he had loved as a boy, I thought it was going on the shelf for a while. To my amazement, my son loves to hear Warner's educated narrative on the various naval battles, from the 16th to the 20th centuries, that changed history dramatically. Hollingsworth's review below is spot-on in every respect, but I would add that another virtue of the book is the comparative tables showing the development of the speed of men-of-war through the centuries, as well as the increase in the range of their armament. The diagrams of the battles are also useful, particularly for teaching the importance of the weather-gage.

Famous and important sea battles of Western History, illustrated by contemporary paintings, etchings, maps, and--beginning with the Monitor and the Merrimac--photographs. Runs from the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, the last major battle in which galleys played a significant role, to Leyte Gulf, where American and Japanese aircraft carriers duked it out near the Philippines in 1944. Almost as much an art book as a history book, things turn a bit dull in the 20th century when full-page color reproductions of paintings are replaced by rather ordinary (with some exceptions) newspaper photos.

The third and best of the Morris Bird III books. It speaks of his life as a teenager, trying to become an adult but ultimately frustrated by his impending and wrenching death. I can understand why some feel that it is a disappointing book: the protagonist dies at the end. Yet, I found the conclusion to be logical and humane. Somehow, this is how Morris Bird III had to end. To have grown to adulthood would have been a disappointment both to him and to me as a reader.

This book truly needs to be read in sequence to capture the full flavor of Morris. Read alone it tends to isolates Morris and you lose much of his wonderful character as detailed in Sliced Bread. Read in context it is a heartbreaking end to a simple yet complex character. Even if you aren't able to read in sequence I would recommend highly, Mr. Robertson does an amazing job creating a character that will touch you and stay with you always, as he has for me nearly 25 years later.

The guide dog mystery is a great way to learn about dogs.

When the Aldens go to the Greenfield Dog School they meet and become friends with a dog and a blind gold. In this story the Boxcar children learn what it is to be blind and the impotance of guide dogs. While doing this they solve a mystery. Watch as the blind girls keen senses help them do something they never done before.

I took some lessons a while back from an amazing trombonist (I play guitar) that just blew my mind with the most musical lines I'd ever heard. He was trying to convince me that what he did was such a simple concept. It was target tones that he had worked with. I messed around with it, and then I found this book. Don's way of explaining the concept behind target tones is simple, easy for guitarists of MANY skill levels to comprehend (although not limited to the guitar!), and VERY thorough. He starts with 2 positions of Maj7, min7 and Dom7 arpeggios and guides you through with baby steps up to the smokin' lines that you hear him absolutely RIP on! Most teachers can't play as well as they teach (there are many exceptions, such as Ted Greene, Scott Henderson and others), but this guy BURNS in a Jimmy Herring way, with bebop and what not. The instructions to playing his examples are explained fully and hearing Don play them at full speed will make you hungry to develop your lines. I don't think that the book is on the thin side. The point is to teach you HOW to develop this technique, not give you a bunch of licks (you get licks, though, but rooted deeply in the practical application of the subject matter). That said, this book is great for many instruments as it applies to MUSIC, not really just guitar. Well done, Mr. Don Mock!!!

This book is a little on the thin side but it is packed with eye opening information on bebop guitar playing. Don Mock explains examples on the audio CD as you follow the book. This really helps to demistify complex ideas when you hear Don calmly explain what he wants you to understand. He shows a multitude of great sounding fusion-style jazz bebop chromatic runs as he targets chord tones. The first few pages are worth the price as Don gives his secret to playing over chord changes using "target melodies" - a revolutionary technique to quickly play pro sounding jazz lines.

Another home run in my opinion, Easy to understand cd included, don mock is the best in my opinion my playing has improved ten fold since I found about Don and his books! Don teaches you a master melody in turn can work on other keys so this is a must have. I have so many bebopish type licks from this booklet, The book gave me the kick start I needed!! I recommend!!

Guitar Axis Turnarounds Master Class by Don Mock is probably the most useful and insightful educational book I have ever read concerning playing lead over jazz and blues changes (amazingly even better than Pat Martino's fabulous and necessary book 'Linear Expressions' REH publications). The main reason is that Martino's book is intended to create an intuitive ability to paraphrase the lines (possibly also considerable as master melodies) pertaining to individual chords that he gives you in permutations that modulate to various key applications. Martino probably found the first concise and deliberate way of doing that for, if not most, then, some people. Mock on the other hand makes his lessons - obvious analysis of what is going on with longer progression changes (e.g. turnarounds) and offers a way of dealing with them in a fast, simple, and generalizible way by using what he terms a 'master melody' which you the player can generate yourself from the fundamental scales and arpaggios being played over. This is simple because the turnarounds are stereotypical and therefore your master melodies can be worked out before you encounter the changes. And because its jazz (or the turnaround in a blues) your melodies will be complex enough to those who only hear them (as oppossed to having practiced them over and over) so they will not seem boring or even obviously remembered from song to song. Furthermore, it turns out that turnarounds are not the only useful places for these master melodies because many songs have either extended sections within them made up of turnarounds or can even be entirely made of turnaround changes.

This is a great book, from a great instructor, composer, and player - go ahead, get it! It also comes with a great CD, Don plays all the exercises.

As for Martino's Linear Expressions, I definitely recommend you buy that too. I'm going to adapt the lines in that book (e.g. using octive, thirds, etc. displacements and, substitutions) to turn them into master melodies useful over more than one chord at a time and over more than turnarounds! One of the greatest Native American studies ever written! Read the Smithsonian Book Review about this amazing work, there is nothing I can say that will out-do it! Buy it, read it, and be thunder struck!

In the gentle, warm environment that is created when I play this tape, I am able to feel and release my grief the way I do when I'm lucky enough to have a very loving and understanding friend to comfort me. I feel understood and less alone and I am guided to move past the type of thinking that keeps me locked in grief and move toward a different, wonderful perspective of wholeness, growth, healing, support and spirituality (the last one because that is my inclination). I cannot recommended highly enough.

By far Belleruth's tapes are the best in applying guided imagery to health and healing. Her tapes inspire as they help you focus your mind on healing your body. Highly recommended!
