Adventure, intrigue, sensuous romance- what more can we ask for?

I read this book in the early 80s and was thrilled to find a new edition. Set in the romantic antebellum south, Melanie vows vengeance on Roland Donavan, whom she blames for her grandfather's death, but his noble character and tender passion throw her plans for revenge into confusion. Add her disappointed suitor and an adventurous quest for riches in Cuba into the mix, and you have the ingredients for a fabulous novel that can't possibly disappoint the most critical of romance fans. Blake's knowledge of history is evident (aside from a few minor mistakes with period fashions) and her love scenes will leave you panting. Highly recommend!

This book is soooooo good!

I read this book a while back (I NEED TO FIND IT)so I can reread it. This book's setting is also in an old time period. It starts off with a plot for revenge but turns into a love that was oh so sweet! There's alot of shock factors in this book but if you like romantic books with twists this is the one.

This story held my interest, it had many aspects to it. I cared about the main characters. They went through a lot. Love wins in the end. Very sensual and erotic. There is just so much to this story that it is too much work to try and say more. Read it, you wont be sorry.

Colourful ode to Warner Brothers animation

This is an excellent and richly illustrated book on animation at Warner Brothers. It contains a lot of background information on e.g. Carl Stalling's music, the styles of the different directors, inside jokes, war cartoons, forgotten cartoon characters and so on. The joy of reading this book is only surpassed by watching the Warner Brothers cartoons themselves.

A great resource for WB cartoon buffs.

First, I have to confess that I am a card-carrying adult who still watches cartoons every Saturday morning. As an adult, however, I'm now interested it the history of the cartoons I watch. (It makes me feel more...sophisticated about my cartoon viewing.)

"That's All Folks" has incredible full-color pictures, chronicals the history of WB cartoons, provides specific information about the most popular characters and cartoons, AND includes a filmography of WB cartoon releases. If you like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the rest of the gang, you should have this book.

While writing an article for the Talaria Enterprises Museum Store's new release of Looney Tunes sculptures, I turned to this very informative book. It discusses the history and impact of the Looney Tunes characters from historical, technical, and theoretical perspectives. Very Good Sourcebook!

A GREAT READ!!!!!!

Review Date: 2003-12-17
This was such a great read. It grabs your attention from the get-go which is unique in it's own way. It's a very interesting combo of historical fiction (and nonfiction), mystery and humor which deals with deep southern racism and how communities attempt to overcome it. It allows you to see the South for what it was---a part of the USA that held misconceptions and did a whole lot of wrongdoing that a lot of people regret. It's important to see and understand that if one looks at the South in today's society, the present can't be blamed for the past.

One minute I was laughing and the next shedding a few tears. Bumpy is a wonderful character who I feel in love with immediately. It shows that someone can grow up in a culturally deprived area, be dirt poor, and still be one of the best people in the world. Bumpy had no reason to love life, but he did, and he makes you love life too. The novel had characters that I hated, characters that I loved, and a few characters that I wanted to hate but really couldn't b/c the plot allows you to see the origins of their personality. Ignorance and racism is a learned characteristic, which this book very delicately points out.

I would recommend this book to anyone---from the South, North, or the West. It not only gives you a deeper understanding of the horrors of the terrible crimes committed during the civil rights movement and its impact on society, but it lets you into the minds of those raised among it to let you see the difficulty of overcoming. All of this is done with a wonderful mystery--ghost type setting that keeps you intrigued throughout.

Historical Fiction At Its Best

Luckily this book was a fast read that flowed very well because I could not put it down.

The story has it all: interesting characters that pull you in and make you want to know more about them; a slowly unfolding mystery that keeps you guessing; historical events perfectly woven into the fabric of the story that truly add to the realism.

I love any story that not only entertains me but also teaches me, causing me to step back in life and re-examine the world around me. Today, as Georgia struggles to step out of the shadows of the "Old South" and show the rest of the world the "New South", it is both timely and thought-provoking to walk through a tale that leads down the path of this transformation. This is a truly American tale that everyone from mystery lovers to history buffs will enjoy.

I could NOT put this book down!!!

This is one of the best books I've ever read [and I'm a book nut, so that's really saying something! :) ]. I picked this book up one evening and literally ended up staying up all night long to finish it - I couldn't go to bed until I got to the ending. [I have several small children who get up at 5am, so this is not something that is normal for me to do].

This book is one of the best mysteries I've ever read - it is full of colorful, rich, engaging characters and the plot is just amazing. You will care passionately about these people from the very first chapters of the book. It is a "coming of age" story in some ways, but different from anything else I've ever read.

It is also a very important book because of the story it tells. Our history is not always good and glorious and it is good to remember the dead and understand our past - it helps us all build a better future. This book succeeds brilliantly in helping us do that without being preachy or heavy.

You will NOT regret buying this book! I can say without hesitation that I *love* it.

One of the BEST romantic/fiction saga's I've ever read in years. Its one of those books you remember and stays with you for days.

Young, beautiful, orphaned girl, raised by her uncle in the country, chases her dreams.... ends up being the maid for wealthy people where she will meet one of the man who will fall in love with her. Gosh, this story had so many twists, emotional... Beautifully written, I can't say enough good things about this book.

Really, you won't be able to put this book down!

I found this treasure of a novel in a used book store and have scoured shops ever since searching for its equal. There are so few books out there that I feel passionate enough about to write a review for and I hope that any visitors to Amazon take the time to read this and, hopefully, pick up a copy of this classic.

'These Golden Pleasures' is an exciting tale of Roxanne Barrington's journey across decades, territories, and many men's beds. You can't help but fall in love with this heroine and this fabulous writer. Enjoy!

I Loved This Book!

Review Date: 2001-08-09
Valerie Sherwood was one of the best romance writers during the 1980s in my opinion. I happened to find this one lying around at my office and gave it a try.

The heroine of the book is not your typical simpering virginal priss. She has a backbone and goes through enough twists and turns to make Susan Lucci or Joan Collins proud. She gets used by men. She uses men. She ends up with the man she really loves. I won't tell you which one, because that is part of the fun of reading the book is to see who she is ultimately going to end up with.

As typical with a lot of the 1980s romances, this one takes itself pretty seriously, despite all of the melodrama. The twists and turns are unbelievable, but if you really want escapist romance, this is it.

Review Date: 1999-12-07
I read this book some years ago and have been desperately trying to find a copy ever since. This is a fabulous book, not as simplistic as the usual psychology book which promises and then fails to deliver - it has some interesting testing techniques where you answer questions and it tells you what type of defence mechanisms you use on a daily basis. I tested both my husband and myself and it revealed things I hadn't even consciously thought about. For anybody who has an interest in learning more about why they do the things they do, this publication is a must! Most highly recommended.

Courageous Therapy

Review Date: 2004-10-02
Therapy has gotten the reputation for being a long, expensive process with little guarantee of success and difficulty in determining any such success. Not so with this book. Rather than the more passive approaches of a number of therapeutic processes and theories, the approach here is to courageously confront the person's ego defenses. Obviously, this is not for the faint of heart. The author provides extensive examples of his approach. Some of these could be used on oneself, but it may be difficult to retain objectivity. I do think he goes overboard (as do many, many others) with the defense called Denial. It can be a copout for anything that doesn't agree with the therapist's preconceptions. And, the therapist CAN be wrong! And, the therapist has his/her own defenses as well. Nonetheless, this book is a wonderful contribution to the genre and gives hope (and a practical, speedy approach) to many people who haven't the time, money, etc. to stay in therapy for decades. It's one of the few books I've kept rather than give away. Makes a great loaner book too.

Scott Muni's radio interviews about (and with) the Beatles
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-20
"Ticket to Ride" was a radio show hosted by Scott Muni devoted entirely to the music and memory of the Beatles (remember the radio station in New York City that played nothing but Beatles music?). Muni was a New York radio mainstay for more than twenty years who was not only a disc jockey but a friend to the Beatles. "Ticket to Ride," the book, brings together photographs, rare Beatles memorabilia from Muni's personal collection, and, most importantly, the transcripts of interviews with those touched by the Beatles in important ways. This means musicians like Elton John, Jimmy Page, Sting, and the Rolling Stones talking about how the Beatles inspired their own careers. Then there are friends like Pete Best and Tommy Smothers, family like Yoko Ono and Julian Lennon, musical associates like Billy Preston and George Martin, and the Beatles themselves talking candidly about their lives and music. Muni writes the introduction, and the transcripts are edited by Denny Somach, Kathleen Somach, and Kevin Gunn. The order of these transcripts could not be characterized as chronological, but there is a general attempt to provide a sense of moving forward. An index would have been nice, so that if you want to read about the Beatles appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," Brian Epstein, or the recording sessions for "Let It Be," that it would be more by purpose than happenstance, but transcripts rarely get presented that way. So, basically what we have in "Ticket to Ride" is an expert interviewer talking with about four dozen famous names about the Beatles, including the most famous names (John, Paul, George and Ringo). These are essentially primary document and virtually every interview is an enjoyable and informative read. Warning: when you read the John Lennon interview be prepared to rummage through your music library to play the same songs that pop up during the conversation.

Some lost gems from Westlake. Most of the short stories in here are from Sci-Fi magazines and are often in the weird category; just barely Science Fiction.
The last story is the novel 'Anarchaos' as written by Curt Clark. It's a great story set on a far-off planet with a Parker-like character seeking vengeance. I give this book 5 stars just for this one story. The other stories are good, but not as gripping as this one.

I have read this book four times and love it each time I read it. The audio book version is so good that you will not want to get to where you are going, but instead keep driving to hear the next story, and then complete the story. I wish there were more volumes to Tomorrows Crimes. The best story of the book is absolutely "Anarchaos". Read this book and you will enjoy it. Listen to the audio book and you will open up a theatre in your mind.

The best audio book purchase I ever made.

First off, I'm a HUGE audio book fan -- I've got seven shelves of them in my house and plan to continue collecting. Out of all of them, I truly enjoyed "Future Crimes" the most. The stories are very clever, yet engaging and easy to follow (a must for an audio format). Westlake combines imaginative visions of the future with very down-to-earth human perspectives, keeping the sci-fi elements of these tales from feeling unrealistic or confusing. The reader, Theodore Bikel, gives a captivating performance of each, drawing you into the little worlds Westlake creates with ease of an master hypnotist. Beyond the exceptionally good stories and wonderful performance, "Future Crimes" stacks up very favourably to other audio titles in that it can be fully enjoyed during your first listening, yet doesn't lose its charm on subsequent listens. Several of the other titles I have are either too complex to appreciate the first time out, or hinge so heavily on the "twist" at the end that there's little point in hearing them twice (which should be considered in light of the high cost of the audio book format). If you are at all a fan of sci-fi, mystery, or horror; I heartily recommend finding a place for "Future Crimes" on you bookshelf. If you as big a fan of the audio book format as I am, your sure to appreciate how well these tales utilize the format. And if you not yet a fan of audio books, this title may well make you one. Happy Listening!

I was looking through my mother's book collection when a title caught my eye. "The Tuesday Blade." The cover was interesting and the blurb sounded good enough so I chose to read it. It was a choice I would never forget. I was hooked from the first page. Every spare minute I had was a chance to dig deeper into the world that was "The Tuesday Blade." I was mesmerized by Gloria-Ann Cooper and the way that she saw the world. It is now two years since I first read this book and I still haven't forgotten the way this book made me feel.

Since there is currently no info about the book I will include the book's blurb, "...Gloria-Ann Cooper--blond, statuesque, raised in Greer County, Oklahoma--arrives at the Port Authority Bus Terminal to start life in the big city working as a magazine researcher and rooming with her childhood girlfriend. What Gloria expects is a world filled with glamour, the 'swinging singles' scene of fascinating men, chic restaurants, discotheques and elegant dinner parties. From the moment she steps off the bus, however, the world she finds is that of the city's dark underbelly--pimps, prostitutes, married men looking for a quick score, and suddenly, murder. A series of bizarre killings that baffle the police suddenly become part of Gloria's nightmare. As one cops says, 'If we're lucky, we're looking for one guy carrying seven straight-edged razors; if we're unlucky, what we're looking for is seven guys carrying one razor each.' What follows is a search unparralleled since Jack the Ripper and an ending of terrifying suspense. The Tuesday Blade is a haunting reading experience you will never forget."

I read this book back when I was a teen and loved it. It made it's way through family members and a list of friends. I still have it today, but alas, with all the passing around, pages are missing. I couldn't believe my luck when I googled and found this site and this book. I am now in my late 40's and I am looking forward to reading it again, and once again sharing with my family, my daughter-in-law can't wait for the book as I have told her parts I still remember. I also read Fern Michael's sisterhood books and enjoy them thoroughly, but none have been as good as the Tuesday blade. Well worth the buy and the read.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants a very good read.
