I completely agree with the other reviewers here. I am a relatively inexperienced guitarist. I really wanted to learn to play Simple Man. I have looked through on line tabs until I was blue. After I received this book I was up and playing the intro in 2 days. The TABs are very, very complete and include the cords they are playing out of to help you get their even faster. I'll never part with my copy of this book. It is a must have for anyone wanting to really play Skynyrd accurately. I highly recommend this book.

This is the ultimate collection for anyone who plays guitar. You should be ashamed of yourself if you do not have this book, or any other Lynyrd Skynyrd book. This book is like my Bible. The only thing it's missing is "That Smell," which is possibly the greated song for guitar ever written. But it does have "Free Bird." Anyone who plays guitar should know the solo from "Free Bird," even if it is too hard for you to play. 4 and a half minutes of just kick-[behind] guitar solos. Some other highlights of the book are "Sweet Home Alabama," "Tuesday's Gone," "Gimme Three Steps," and "What's Your name?" But all the songs in the book are incredible. I wasn't a real Lynyrd Skynyrd fan before I bought this book and learned all the solos and riffs, and now I respect them more than ever. You need this book. Don't be caught without it.

I agree with the above. For any classic player this is a must. It's second only to the Eagles Anthology that has EVERY song ever done by the group. I am still wishing it had That Smell as well, but it gives you even ghost notes you dont hear on the tracks. Piano, GTR1, GTR2, 2 GTR as 1. The book does it all. Now I can play the Free BirD Solo the way it was meant to be played, not to mention simple man, and gimmie three steps. Hands down the best Skynyrd book to by. Check out 3 Doors Down they are gettin gback to the classic rock sound also, and even do a cover of that smell on a live album. 5 out of 5 on this one! A++!

I first read this book in the 1970's, and have spent the last several years looking for it again. Probably the first Post atomic conflict book I had ever read and it still reads well after 30 years. For anyone ordering this as a used copy, be aware that of the two photos provided for this on Amazon, the white cover is actually the hardback edition, while the red cover with the mushroom cloud and a line of people in the foreground is the mass market paperback

A post-apocalypse subsistence economy
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-03
This book was surprisingly good. The title put me off, since I inferred that it attributed the collapse of civilization to some silly supernatural struggle, like "Swan Song" by Robert McCammon, which I bought and barely began reading before I dropped it in disappointment. (Not that all supernaturally inspired apocalypses are bad stories: I really liked "The Stand" by Stephen King.) In fact, Malevil is simply the name of the little French community where the story occurs. It is a pretty good story about a subsistence economy arising after a nuclear holocaust. Unfortunately, you never find out what is happening in the world outside that little community, but it is pretty good nevertheless: there is no backstory about the disintegration or reconstitution of the national government, which is the part that I usually enjoy the most in post-apocalyptic fiction, but there is an amusing thread about the basis for the local ecclesiastical jurisdiction where the protagonist relies on some medieval warrants in order to trump the religious charlatan who has established himself as the ruler in the next town over.

Clever novel of post apocolypse survival

If you are a fan of the post apocolypse genre, then you will appreciate this gem of a book. It is difficult to find, but it is well worth perservering with a search.

The title of the book refers to an old castle in rural France, and which is owned by our hero, the narrator of the story. By a happy coincidence of ancient stone and being sheltered by a cliff, a small community survives the aftermath of a "clean" bomb by sheltering within its walls.

At first the community is obsessed with the everyday challenges of life - what to eat, drink, will there be fallout? But as the novel progresses, and we learn of other survivors, it begins to look at the very nature of human behaviour when stripped of the facade of civilisation.

This is a very "believable book", as much as such a horror tale can be, and it is interspersed with some very astute observations of human behaviour, with both acts of kindness portrayed as well as the abuses of power. The detail of how nature as well as the characters recover from the loss and shock of it all is well portrayed and keeps you turning the pages.

This is a treat if you are a fan of the genre. If you are interested in tales of human survival in horrendous times, this is also for you. As I said, hard to find, but well worth looking for!

I found this book in a state of confused abandonment at my local bookstore, lost among a mumbo-jumbo of unrelated material. I took it home and doubted my purchase until I had tried to obtain TCM information from about five other sources and felt completely confused. TCM can be very difficult to understand, let alone explain, without the guidance of such clear minds as Dr. Fan's. Many books on TCM fail to follow a clear line of explanation and get lost among the confusing similarity and seeming interchangeability of terms found in many sources, but Dr. Fan never does that. Clear, scholarly, a bit dry at times, he never leaves the reader in a void, but rather goes back on himself so as to ensure understanding. His presentation really does TCM a great service, as he dispenses completely with esoteric-sounding, tried and trite pseudo-explanations found elsewhere, and shows how TCM really is a scientific, integrated, logical science. Even obscure concepts such as "disrespect" among the five phases are explained clearly. Differential diagnosis is covered step by step, and Dr. Fan again shows he did extensive homework by summarizing and giving clear correlations between all stages of this most important TCM diagnostic technique. The explanations are brief, but they are a sure starting point and landmark for the student pursuing in-depth knowledge of TCM. For anyone who is looking to study TCM, and for students already lost in the half-english works of authors whose use of the language is their most appalling shortcoming, Dr. Fan's work is my recommendation. And for all practitioners of TCM, please give this book a read, you will find in it a renewed sense of the scientific coherence and depth of TCM at its best.

Clear, useful, and very informative book.

Former Brattlesboro police chief Joe Gunther knows that finesse and politeness are critical if the newly formed Vermont Bureau of Investigation (VBI) is to succeed. Joe, being a former town cop, knows that the locals will not appreciate outsiders from the state. As a matter of truth, the VBI has been mired under bureaucratic inertia until the Governor, answering a reporter's question, publicly assigns its first case even if the Stowe police chief has not asked for help.

The body of Canadian Jean Deschamps has been found frozen on the side of Mt. Mansfield. Someone with surgical skills amputated his feet and an arm, and punctured his heart. To Joe, the victim seems more like a frozen fossil since he has been iced for over five decades. As Joe and his crack team investigate the homicide, he also needs to massage the egos of the local law enforcement team, the Canadian liaison, the media, and the public expectations of the VBI's capabilities. At the same time, the threat of gang warfare in Jean's home province of Quebec increases the pressure to expeditiously solve the case.

The eleventh Gunther mystery is a dramatic change in the star's role as he switches from local policing to state law enforcement. The change is smoothly done as Joe's inner values and methodology remain the same, but the type of case and the political implications have moved to a higher level. THE MARBLE MASK is a strong police procedural that will excite fans of the series with its fascinating plot that combines a solid investigation with puissant external interests hampering the inquiry. Taking a risk, Archer Mayor continues to be a leading light of the New England regional mystery.

A Master Artist With Words

All of Archer Mayor's books have a gripping story line. Although the stories are first class, the pictures drawn with words as the story unfolds are the best that I have ever encountered. The magnificent metaphors can create, in less than one sentence, images that may take other authors pages. Although each book is independent in and of itself, I enjoy reading the stories in sequence. There is a steady progression in character development and interpersonal relationships as we go from story to story.

If you are a mystery fan, I am sure that you will enjoy the entire series as much as I have. If you are a student taking a course in creative writing, I don't think that you will find a better word artist than Archer Mayor.

Archer Mayor is steadily turning out first rate mysteries with a strong sense of place. Set in Vermont, Mayor's books capture their setting beautifully with quirky local details. But better still are Mayor's wild (yet plausible) plots. In this, his latest, the police find a frozen body with several missing parts (which broke off when the body was dropped from a plane). They quickly determine that the body belongs to a Canadian gangster, who disappeared fifty years earlier. The plot brings detective Joe Gunther to Sherbrooke, Canada, and involves delving into the history of a suicide-mission World War II commando unit, the product of a joint Canada-U.S. effort. One of Gunther's sidekicks -- the growling misanthrope Willy Kunkle -- brings a lot to these books as a character who evolves from book to book.

Just marvelous.

My luck was stumbling across Nagy's "Marriage" 13 years after it first published. A wonderful story, both entertaining and thought provoking. I think readers will identify with the characters on many levels.

A delicious novel of romance, infidelity and struggle. "Marriage" delves at length into the complicated phoenomenons of long term marriage, lust and greed. But the story doesn't stop there. Nagy skillfully slips readers right into the shoes of twenty-somethings who are both bound by and seeking independence from their family; adult siblings who harbor childhood scars and a yearning to give and get approval from each other; sandwich generation parents dealing with aging parents and kids who aren't kids anymore. A host of friends, business associates and a beloved pet round out the cast, helping to shape the story and keep the plot moving in interesting directions.

What started out as another light summer novel proved to be an exceptional book that really moved me. I think "Marriage" is an excellent selection to share and discuss among friends or at a book club. It is still as fresh and relevant today as it must have been when originally written.

Sobering, heartwarming and uttterly compelling

Less than two minutes ago I reached page 428 of "Marriage" a truly awesome, compelling book. Throughout my reading I experienced emotions never brought about before whilst delving into a book. At times I felt like Annie and certainly by the final chapter I too was in floods if not torrents of tears. I thank Goria Nagy for allowing me the opportunity through reading to reflect on my life as a 34 year old mother of two with a steadfast and understanding partner. At this point I feel it ought to be known that I rarely read for pleasure but more often read for my degree. With "Marriage", which from the start dragged me kicking and screaming towards it, I had no choice but to devote all my spare time to its entire consumption.

So without going into detail about my life I want it to be known that I enjoyed "Marriage" immensely and because there are many comparisons between mine and Annie's character, I thank Gloria Nagy for bringing them to my attention.

I look forward to reading more of Ms Nagy's work in the future and am certain that in terms of my creative writing prospects she will be my inspiration.

This is great story about the Wilders, a happily married couple who have it all. He's an actor and she's a writer, and they love each other deeply. On her 40th birthday all hell breaks loose in her life. Annie's almost perfect husband Mickey is having an affair with a wretched artist, there's a death in her family, her brother is mugged and on and on it goes. Annie tries to evaluate her life and make sense of it all with insights that will have you nodding your head in agreement or make you look into yourself a little for some answers. This is as real as characters get. You'll laugh, and get angry and root for Annie who is truly any woman who has ever had her life turn haywire. The author has a real feel for her characters and this book just rolls along, it almost reads its' self. This is about love and relationships, anger and forgiveness, and the acceptance of our imperfections as well as the imperfections in those we love. This couple searchs to find what they really want, only to find that maybe that was what they already had. The author does a fine job of making the characters see each other clearly, then finally seeing themselves clearly. This book is filled with wit, warmth and some very keen observations, and well worth your time.

This book takes up the tale where Merlin's Godson leaves off and Munn weaves an extraordinary story that moves from the Fall of Atlantis to the emergence of the Renaissance. Like Merlin's Godson it is full of unique visions and ideas that really captured my imagination.

And in my mind that is what a great fantasy novel does, it opens your mind to something completely new and undreamt.

Find yourself a copy and dive into this compelling read.

I have been reading true crime since I was about 11 years old and I must say this one will stay in my collection. I find that many true crime books are written without much attention to background or in-depth analysis. I began reading this after having just finished Jim Schutze's "Bully" and I had been dissapointed with the lack of depth in that book and how it seemed rushed. Cannot say that about "Murder of Innocence" at all! This account, and I have yet to read Eggington's book on this case so I cannot compare, goes into great detail to descibe Laurie Dann as the person she was from childhood to age 30 and describes her descent into madness in such a way that I kept wondering "What is she going to do next?" There are alot of characters to keep straightened out - as to who is a relative, in-law, roommate or just someone who slighted her somehow; indeed this book is for the serious reader and not one looking for a quick superficial account of a case. The manner in which Laurie hops from one college to another is amazing; clearly her parents never sat her down and seriously told her "You have a failed marriage and you have enrolled in college several times but dropped out. You seem to be lacking direction in your life and we want to know what the problem is and what we can do to help." More often, her mother was aloof regarding Laurie's problems, and her father, although he did seem to love her, could not, or did not want to, see how serious her problems were. Her parents were ostriches with their heads in the sand - probably hoping Laurie would skate through life and hopefully find her way without too much of a burden on them. I cannot help feeling also that her medical care could have been more aggressive, but it appears that her psychiatrist tried numerous times to keep in contact with her but Laurie treated doctors and dormitories like revolving doors. I highly recommend this book for anyone studying forensic science or psychology, and it should be recommended to those in law enforcement as well. Excellent job!

While the book was a fictional mystery, it had many accurate facts about the Alamo.
