Why wasn't MANEATER a monster hit? It is in a class with Benchley's JAWS and Godey's THE SNAKE. A maneating tiger loose in the woods of north Georgia, numerous amateur huters becoming tiger-chow before the trained professional is brought in -- this just begs to be a major motion picture.

Truly after reading the reviews written by previous readers about this book, i just had to read the book. I was intrigued ultimately about the premise of the story, a bengal tiger lose in north Georgia, AWESOME. Reading the first half of the story i found comparisons to that of the movie "Jaws", mystique, suspense, and great story telling both depicted by Warner and Speilber. The second half of the story then wandered a bit from the roots and went into a metaphorical shift to ones manhood. But i do truly wish many to read this story which i couldnt put down!!! Also Jim Grahams character in this story is truly charasmatic and geniune!! READ IT

I read every day and this is one of the best books I have ever read and I have read a lot of books over the last 40 years. My husband is reading this right now and he can hardly put it down. I love to read books by Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Lee Childs, John Sandford and many others. The characters in this book come alive, I laughed, cried, and was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole book. I hope Jack Warner is writing more books because he is on my list as "must have more of his books".

How this novel escaped wider attention is simply beyond me. Jack Warner delivers a brilliant book based on what should have been a campy premise: Huge Bengal tiger escapes from a circus train that is travelling through the southern US, and begins a killing spree. A friend told me about the hardcover from Tor, and I took a chance and picked it up. In a word, brilliant. The characters are fleshed out and deftly drawn, the suspense effective, and the prose both lean and literate. Do yourself a favor and check this one out. Now.

THE MISFIT

I have been re-reading Norman Mailer's Marilyn- his take on the life of the legendary screen star Marilyn Monroe at a time when I have just viewed the American Masters documentary on the musical career of the singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell. And although there is no obvious connection between the lives or the talents of the two women there is a tale of two generations hidden here. Marilyn represented for my parent's generation, the generation that survived the Great Depression and fought World War II, the epitome of blond glamour, sex and talent. To my more `sedate' generation long straight-haired blond Joni represented the introspective, searching quiet beauty that we sought to represent our longings for understanding of a seemingly baffling world that we had not made. As the this book and the Mitchell documentary points out however they `represented' our fantasies they also shared a common vulnerability attempting to be independent women in worlds dominated by men. Such is the life of the great creative talents.

Mailer traces Monroe rise from poverty, the struggle to find herself, through to the rocky and some times sleazy road to stardom. As always with Mailer one gets his take on what the symbol of Marilyn meant to my parents' generation, and, let us face it, especially men. His portrayal does not evoke his preferred hipster, beat personality but its counterpoint in the 1950's the heyday of Marilyn's fame. Mailer also goes through Marilyn various affairs with men particularly the doomed marriage to the playwright Arthur Miller. Finally he gives some very interesting details on the behind the scenes drama in the creation of many of her well-known films. Marilyn, while she was alive, never drew my eye for the reasons that Joni Mitchell did. But much later, having seen the classic The Misfits in a film revival theater, I will say just one thing about her looks and performance in that film. Wow. The marriage to Miller may have not worked out but she did right by him and herself with that performance. Yes, indeed.

This is the BEST biography ever written about our Marilyn...

In this book the author describes the tumultuous career and life of Marylin Monroe. One gets the impression from reading this book that there are only 3 roles for actresses in Hollywood namely "Babe", "District Attorney" and "Driving Miss Daisy". Sadly Ms. Monroe did not get past the 'Babe" stage of her acting career. This book is just one of many biographies on this actress who has had more books written about her than any other deceased celebrity. One gets the feeling from reading this book that if Ms. Monoroe would have lived until her sixties then she would have just been another "has been actress" largely forgotten by the Movie Going Public and would have gotten 5 lines in her Obituary on page 10 of any newspaper like her contemporary actress Gene Tierney did. I give this book 5 stars for the valiant attempt by the author in his efforts to illustrate the complexities of this sad, lonely lost soul.

Excellent!

I am so glad you found it for me even though it was out of print. I would have hated to miss reading this book.

Also, the book was used but was in perfect condition. Thanks for everything.

Everyone who loves Marilyn Monroe should read this book.

This beautifully illustrated book explains how and why castles were built in the middle ages and why they were such a dominant influence on medieval life, especially in times of war. Philip Warner recreates a complete picture of daily life in a medieval castle: how peasants and nobles lived; how men fought in tournaments and trained for combat; how castles were sited, designed, managed, attacked and defended; and what the the people who lived in them ate, drank, and wore. This book will also go a long ways toward breaking up some of the preconceived notions that people have about castles. One learns that the castle was not primarily a refuge. The object of the castle wasn't to retreat from conflict, but to control it. The Medieval castle was a dynamic integral part of medieval society and Philip Warner does brilliant work in showing this. Whether you're a medieval history buff or just a curious layman read this book. It will take a little effort to find it, but it's worth the time.

Philip Warner was lecturer at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, England and is the author of a numerous of books.
In this work, he gives you the need for the Castle, why it came into being, how it developed. He show the strict structure of the Castle society - inside and out, the lives of the people running it and those serving in it, even down to what they are and worse. He even cover medieval recreation!!

He breathes live into the subject, giving a fresh new look instead of tired impressions.

Excellent work for people wish to see Castle life as it was or for Writers of Historical works.

Highly recommended.

If you only read two books on castles, make it Gies' Life in a Medieval Castle and this one. The two books are very similar in layout and readablity, but Warner's is a bit more detailed and in depth. It also has very nice illustrations. As much as I love Francis Gies' book, I think this one just edges it out.

The vocal selections of any Sondheim show tend to be a tease until the full vocal score is published. Sadly, the full score for "Merrily We Roll Along" is no longer in print, (and how I wish I could remember to whom I lent my copy as I would get it back,) but we have to settle for the music that is here and let "Bobby and Jackie and Jack" and "Franklin Shephard Inc" come out of our hands by memory. "Not a Day Goes By" is one of the most brilliant pieces of irony ever written and this book gives you both versions. The finale: "Our Time" which is a remarkable tribute soing and wonderful for any graduation or special occasion, exists on page in this book without giving away it's secret. Nor will I. Ignorance is bliss. Buy the book. Use it as you will and enjoy it.

It is a pleasure to see the music of Stephen Sondheim. He wrote his best music for this show. Just the showstoppers "Being alive" or "Side by side by side" are worth to buy this book. Sondheim makes love with his music and his lyrics. And he is a great lover.

Furth and Sondheim have done it again! This play combines the delightfulness of youth and dreams and the harshness of reality. It runs backwards to keep your spirits high at the end. Also, to show that the path you choose isn't always the one that leaves you with everything you imagined. Sondheim beautifully captures the true emotions present throughout this show. He does not create a false emotion, but brings each piece to an aesthetic that surges with a true felt emotion. Truly, this play will leave you laughing, crying, and breathless.

My only complaint is that the melody is often imposed on the piano part. Sondheim's music for this play is beautiful and driven by his chords. To make it playable with the melody, they had to remove some of the notes. My suggestion: buy it and let the singer sing the melody.

The Boxcar Children were one of my favorite series of books when I was young. As a grandma, I have purchsed these books to read to my grandson which I started in the Spring of 2008. He was a 1st grader at the time and he loves them too. We have just finished this book and it is so much fun seeing how he tries to figure out the mystery as we go along. He will not let his parents read these books to him - only his grandma or grandpa! He even said that someday his dad will read them to his grandchildren and then someday he (grandson) will read them to his grandchildren! It is a great bonding and sharing time with him.

This book is very uplifting and contains quotes from the The Holy Bible to help you deal with issues that can be discouraging in your life. Joyce also includes some personal accounts of situations she has been in where certain scriptures have given her encouragement. This book is great just to keep on hand all the time to help us remember some of God's promises. It fits perfectly in my purse. It certainly has helped me with depression, fear and stress. When the world is not encouraging, here is some of God's words for encouragement in the journey of life. I love the way the book is put together, it is actually a beautiful book in both appearance and content. I think it's a great gift for anyone you care about, because we all have times in our lives were we need some inspiration.

Joyce uses both scripture and personal experience in a very compelling way. This prayer book, along with "The Joy of Believing Prayer" are two of my favorites.

Excellent tale of Los Angeles and early Hollywood

This book wins on two fronts: it gives a fascinating insight into the development of Los Angeles at the end of the 19th Century, and the emergence of that brash new town, Hollywood; and it is also a great love story, centering first of all around the love of brothers Bud and Vincent van Vliet for Amelie Deane and then of Vincent's son Kingdon for Bud's daughter Tess. I read this book thirty years ago and still love it and re-read it. It is very well-written, the characters are all three-dimensional and I love the history of El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles de Porcunciula (Los Angeles for short), with its railroads, its oil fields, it's Santa Ana winds, and its developing movie industry.

It hasn't dated one bit, and if you can get hold of a copy, grab it.

It was actually several years ago I read this book - a friend of mine had just finished it and recommended it to me.

Prior to telling me about the context of the novel, she had noted several times: "I just finished reading this book the other day, and it has done nothing but perturb me ever since. For some reason I cannot stop thinking about it." It is books like the one she was then rather abstractly describing that pique my interest, so I asked if I could borrow her copy of it, for my own enjoyment (and judgment). I began reading it that afternoon while trying to pass the time at a local theatre rehearsal. Needless to say I was absorbed - the prose was stunning! Poignant, written without regret; magnificently and sharply outlined by the dolorous contemplations of each character.

The plot of the book is vague in my mind. I remember some of the subplots very specifically, however, down to even the most intimate details. It is a love story, but one far too literary to be deemed simply a 'romance'. The novel itself takes place over the course of about three generations in the life of a California family. There is much tenderness and brilliance present - it is ultimately a clever book with a tragic ending. I would like to read it once again, and feel what I did the first time. It did not "perturb" me afterward like it did my friend, but it did leave a weighty impact.

I began to read this book 2 days ago and could not put it down. It is the story of the birth of a city, Los Angeles, which coincides with the settling of the area by two prominent families, the Deanes and the Van Vliets. Through marriage, these two families merge and produce adventurous men who gamble everything on risky business ventures and beautiful women. The Van Vliets take center stage, and the story follows the lives of two brothers, Bud and V3 (short for Vincente.) The older brother Bud is a confident, take-charge sort who intimidates his more introverted younger brother, V3. The younger man always feels that he is in his brother's shadow and so he constantly strives to match Bud in business and in love. This inevitably pits the two brothers against one another, and their sibling rivalry results in rash actions which have consequences on each succeeding generation of the family. The background setting of early Los Angeles is the perfect one for this epic novel, and the well-developed plot and characters make this 25-year-old book one which deserves to be rediscovered by today's readers.

I stumbled across this book randomly in a very outdated ship's library where most of the books were from the 1960's-70's. And I'm glad I did.
For anyone interested in travel and adventure this book is immediately interesting, gripping you right from the start. The greatest thing about this book, in addition to the adventures, is the author's (also the translator's) writing style. The author speaks so matter-of-factly and with a touch of dry humor about all these fantastic adventures that it makes the reader that more amazed by them when you think about what is really happening. Though it might be a cliche, the author makes you feel you are right there with them, not just a spectator but almost an active participant.
I have since bought this book myself and read it twice, it is a quick read. In fact I left the old copy where I found it on the chance that someone else will stumble across it as well, and enjoy it as much as I have.
The author himself is quite a character, sort of a French academic Indiana Jones as another reviewer put it, and has written another book that I plan to read. Highly recommended!

I read Panjamon in the sixties. I had trouble finding it on the internet. Perhaps one adventure like this is enough for one lifetime.

Lost in the Borneo interior during the 60's, the author comes across some very different looking natives; are they friendly?, well, sort of, they shoot him with a paralyzing, non-deadly, dart, then haul him back to the tribe for 3 years.

A multitude of perils and adventures ensue including a marriage ritual requiring being put naked into a hole filled with fire ants then immediately being banished to the forest to survive alone, cold, and infected, with no cell phone.

If you're an adventure and travel reader, check this out.
It's a remarkable tale and it's incredible that the author survived.

Vive Jean Yves Domalain, Headhunter!

Panjamon makes a lasting impression.

This is one of the very rare books offering insight into the life of indigenous people before civilization even touched them. The Kajan and Iban peoples of Borneo were still living as hunters at stone age level in the impenetrable forests of Borneo when the author visited both tribes and spent considerable time in an Iban village of headhunters. He went through the initialization rituals and married an Iban woman, learned to hunt by blowpipe and appreciate the rich and lighthearted life of the primitive.
This book offers views that deeply affected my outlook on our species. Still, the author is a zoologist and had no anthropologist ambitions whatsoever to begin with. I rate it equal to Jean Liedloffs books. Too bad it is out of print, possibly because it was put in the "travel and adventure" section.

It's a book to keep for future reference. I've used it many times with colleagues and subordinates. Its examples are fantastic, it's written in a direct and easy way. All managers should read it to grasp hints on how to manage people and achieve the aimed results. Worth every penny spent on it. I've also read 'Thriving on Chaos' from the same author. Some chapters overlap, but it is an even deeper book on the subject matter. 'A Passion for Excellence' is written in a passionate way. You'll never forget it while working in management.

Many people have written that they like Tom Peters, but do not think that he has much to say that is new or different. Others criticize Peters for being changeable in his views. What these people miss is that Tom Peters is passionate about using passion for customers, employees, and everyone else to create great results for all of us. By awakening our passion, we will do more, we will try more, and we will succeed more often. In many ways, this book is much more important than IN SEARCH OF EXCELLENCE. A PASSION FOR EXCELLENCE clearly shows that passionate leadership about the right things sets a good example and the right tone for the organization. This book is helpful in that each section is meant to be read as a stand-alone, so you can go to the places that you did not feel very passionate about when you read IN SEARCH OF EXCELLENCE and get some good reinforcement about the value of passion in that area. A good companion piece if you need more passion and self-direction is Tony Robbins' AWAKEN THE GIANT WITHIN.

Having read and enjoyed "In Search for Excellence", I decided to also read "A Passion for Excellence". This book proposes that it is unnecessary to go through the traditional data-based doctrine of management. Instead the book advocates championing an innovative, customer and people oriented spirit. The authors give hundreds of actual, real-world examples, focusing on the key areas of competence that add up to excellence, offering scores of anecdotes and practical insights to help all business people on their road to leadership, success, and more importantly, excellence.

Joyce is a great minister and author, so I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was amazed to find that hiding away in my heart was unforgiveness. Reading this book brought total deliverance for me. As I turned the pages the Holy Spirit began to purge me. I am now on the path to building healthier relationships because the walls have come down.

Love Joyce Meyer's Books

It is powerful to forgive & allow love to replace fear & anger in our hearts. I really liked the quote "Everyday is a new day in God's mercies, don't waste today by living in yesterdays sins" it is a postive gift to all believers, when we feel forsaken, lost & unloved. As simple as truly forgiving any or all persons or actions that harm or destroy us in life's path, can restore us with peace by 1 mighty powerful word "forgiveness" which in my mind as the authors, forgiveness is linked closely to love.
