This book should be required reading for high school and, or college students.
This is an amazing story of survival, and of the two men who had to over come enormous obstacles to save themselves.
I don't want to say to much about the story. So, I'll just say Mr Ware (his title when he was shot down) and his pilot at the time they are forced down in the jungle and must find a way to survive for longer then I thought possible in that jungle.
That being said, this is not just a war story. This is the story of a man who refused to be told he wouldn't be able to accomplish his long held goal/dream. And the opposition to his aspirations started very early in rural Mississippi.
This much more then a war story this is lesson for all young people about how to reach those goals you have set for yourself.
I can't recommend this book to highly. I found it hard to put down, but by the same token I hated to see it end. I will be reading again.

I honestly couldn't put it down. And it's hard to believe that it's a true story.
Brigadier General (ret) Ezell Ware's story will hold your interest from
page one to the very end. His heroism and courage will inspire whether or not you're a military fan.
I highly recommend this book.

Definitive source the Cearnacháin lineageReview Date: 2005-08-30
I was not at all disappointed. Bess and Bobby covered all of topics that I was searching for in particular. And they covered many that I didn't even know to ask or wonder about. The only thing left unanswered for me was my own personal genealogical line. And after talking with both Bess and Bobby, they do indeed have my line, but I will have to wait for a later volume to see it in a beautiful hardcover.
I thoroughly recommend this to anyone interested in Cearnacháin lineage and history of the warrior clan. I bought one for my parents and myself, and would do it again in a heartbeat. They are a very limited print and will be sure to be a family favorite.

Altsheler: Great American AuthorReview Date: 2001-02-18
The Kentucky Frontiersmen is a newer version of the same book as the "The Young Trailers" that Altsheler wrote in the late 1800"s except a more modern version. The difference being that a lot of the slang is taken out and replaced with more modern words, there are illustrations and I believe that the print is larger.
I first read books from the "Young Trailer Series" back in the 50's when I was in grade school and they had a great influence on my life. I recently ordered some of the books from the Altsheler series from Amazon.com and enjoyed them again immensely. The theme represented throughout the series was the constant struggle to be the best and to be ready and prepared to prove it at anytime or it could cost an early Kentucky settler his life was a lesson that I took with me into competitive situations like sports, academics and the business world.
The "Kentucky Frontiersmen" teaches values that are so important especially to growing children that deal with responsibility, hard work, integrity, intelligence and the special type of people that built this country.
Every resident of Kentucky should read these books because historically they give an accurate view of what Kentucky was like back in the early days of settlement. What a special place Kentucky must have been and I'm sure, still is.
When Kentucky was wilderness.Review Date: 2007-11-08
I grew up in a small town in the Pacific Northwest . Our little library carried all eight volumes of this frontier adventure series, of which The Young Trailers was the first episode. For several years I read and reread these marvelous stories. They made an indelible impression upon my mind and heart, and basically formed my image of America.
Author Joseph Altsheler was a newspaperman and prolific writer of romances and adventure stories of the American frontier. (The latter for readers of grades six through ten.) He was a knowledgeable man, well read in history, archeology, and botany (to mention but a few of his interests). He managed to weave his broad field of knowledge so skillfully into the narratives of his stories that the reader is unaware that he/she is being educated as well as entertained. He was a very successful and famous writer in the early 1900s.
Kentucky Frontiersman is written in Altsheler's usual master story teller, vivid, manner. Vivid is the key word here. Altsheler is a natural yarn spinner. We experience the primordial landscape through the acute senses of the young hero, Henry Ware, a teen-ager who is keenly perceptive of the unspoiled verdant forests, clear streams, mighty rivers, deep caves and abundance of flora and fauna of frontier Kentucky. (There are scenes of action, suspense, violence and death; but written appropriately for the age level.)
Without giving the plot away, there are just two points worth mentioning.
First is the sensible way Alsheler handles the irreconcilable confrontation with the Indians over the land. The Indians are not presented as inferior in any way to the Caucasian settlers. In fact the hero is captured by an Indian tribe and finds the primitive culture more amenable to his inner affinity than his settler upbringing. He happily "goes Native" and finds a deep spiritual affinity and unity with nature while living with the Indians.
Second, and importantly, Altsheler portrays in dramatic form the theory put forward by his contemporary, historian Frederick Jackson Turner. Turner's "The Significance of the Frontier in American History" was published in 1893, when Altsheler was age 31. Altsheler must have been familiar with Turner's work. Turner's thesis was that the spirit and success of the United States is directly tied to the country's westward expansion. According to Turner, the forging of the unique and rugged American identity occurred at the juncture between the civilization of settlement and the savagery of wilderness. This produced a new type of citizen - one with the power to tame the wild and one upon whom the wild had conferred strength and individuality.
The six volume set of The Young Trailers should be on the library shelves of all schools for grades six through ten. I know of no other comparable literature that conveys this important part of American history in such an accessible form for our young Americans. It is a part of American culture that is being lost, as our young citizens are being overwhelmed by trivia and gadgetry.

Excellent resource for anyone interested in LAMPReview Date: 2004-05-09
The book is divided into four distinct parts and organized in an unexpected way. Instead of giving each part of LAMP its own section the four sections focus on structure (getting them all up and working together), static web pages (creating and using them), dynamic web pages (getting the pages to do something via Perl and MySQL), and embedded programs (to make the whole system run quicker). Each section covers all the components of LAMP as applied to that section. For example, the structural section examines installation, configuration, security, and basic usage of Linux, Apache, MySQL, and Perl. For Perl it includes a discussion of variables, arrays, operators, flow-control, regular expressions, functions, and file input/output. For MySQL it includes working with tables, insert, select, update, and similar basic commands. This is a very well done section and gives all the basic information necessary to get each of the components up and working with each other. The section on static web pages mainly covers the use of Website META Language (WML) to generate a consistent look and feel across all the web pages on the server. The part on dynamic web pages covers CGI and mod-perl so you can process information submitted by an html page or other CGI script. It also includes information on using Perl to access the MySQL server and generate dynamic information. The final section examines embedded programs such as Server Side Includes (SSI), embedded Perl, MASON, and PHP and how they are used to make a faster dynamic web site.
I have to say that I really liked this structure. Once a system is set up it is rare to have to refer to the installation information again. If it were organized by Linux, Apache, MySQL and Perl then I would have to flip to what I assume is the appropriate section turn past the installation portion and try to locate what I am looking for. This way, since it is organized by the various stages of getting the system up and running it is easier to find what I want.
The text includes lots of example coding so you can actually write and test it right away. This is a great way to learn the basics. It is not a thorough course in any of the four components but it does give you enough of a background to do most of what you might need to do. Of course, what makes it really valuable is the fact that it covers how to get each of the components to work together without problems. There are good books on each of these components but it is rare to find one that focuses on the interrelationships between them. "Open Source Web Development with LAMP" is highly recommended for anyone who wants to set up a LAMP server or needing to work with one.
Super ReferenceReview Date: 2003-02-06
Open Source Web Development with LAMP is a very long title, but an absolutely killer book. LAMP is Linux (OS), Apache (web server) MySQL (database), Perl and PHP (scripting). This book also includes many languages not covered in other titles. I was particularly glad to see WML (Website Meta Language) which is useful for generating static pages through a robust programming construct. Static pages load faster and without any security concerns that you have with dynamic scripting languages like perl, php, embperl, or mason, all of which are covered extreemly well in this book.
I've been doing web development for about 8 years, which probably makes me pretty old in the business. I've seen the dynamic web content languages from infancy, but I've never seen a good way of learning them until now. OSWD w/ LAMP is absolutely fabulous.
Required reading for any web designer.Review Date: 2003-01-02
I was one of the technical editors of this book, and was able to watch it evolve as they wrote. The authors have made a huge effort to make the book appropriate for multiple Linux distributions, and they have achieved the highest degree of technical accuracy.
OSWB covers many different technologies, some complementary, some discreet. By showing you many of the possible tools, this book lets you decide which is best for the job at hand.
The theory behind OSWB is that knowledge of 20% of a tool's capabilities will let you accomplish 80% of the tasks you face. OSWB does a superb job of giving the user a sizable introduction to webserver technologies that will be sufficient for most rojects, and tells you where you can get information for advanced needs...This is the first book I know of that has written their website with the exact same tools they teach you in the book, and they offer the entire source of their website for download for your investigation and reference.
The gold in this book is not just the descriptions of how the languages work, but how you can use them singly or together to create interactive websites. Their are many sample projects which let you see how everything fits together, and much of the ode can be adapted immediately to your needs. The book is extremely well integrated and organized.
I have used some of the languages described in this book, while others were completely new to me. I am definitely not a web design person, preferring to write back-end server software. owever while reading OSWB, I was charged with creating a MySQL database with a customizable web interface for my alumni organization. Using only this book and a few perldoc commands, I was able to create an interactive mod_perl website in a few days.
This book offers something to everyone, even advanced web designers. If you are starting out in Web technologies, or are curious about other ways you can get the job done, this is the book for you.
