More than a reference book: An interesting read as well

The most comprehensive references on transferware pottery are basically boring lists: You use them to reference a specific item, and not much else.
This book is so much more.
It's a top reference work, but is also the sort of book you can put on the coffee table - or curl up with in bed for an absorbing couple of hours reading.
Highly recommended.

College teaching ethics
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-01
Potential buyers should note that this book concerns itself with the ethics of teaching at the college level. It does not discuss high school, middle school or elementary education, and there's certainly nothing on the ethical challenges of special ed. The discussion of each case seems pretty sensible, but it's brief and so provides a starting point for discussion rather than real resoluton of problems.

A "Must-Have" Resource for Teachers of Tolkien

Review Date: 2008-07-06
As a thirty-year fan (and teacher) of Tolkien's books, I was delighted to find Jim Ware's book of twenty reflections on personal and spiritual themes in "The Hobbit." Ware's tone is informal, light, often humorous, and personal. He is well acquainted with Tolkien's writings and includes an impressive section of endnotes. Each essay contains well-chosen biblical and literary references. If you are not too familiar with the plot of "The Hobbit," you will appreciate the detailed way Ware introduces each reflection. The content, though, is not only for newcomers. His chapter on the eagles of Middle Earth made me stop and say, "Wow!" Anyone teaching Tolkien's fiction should own a copy of this book.

Chris Ware's early stuff
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-24
If you are reading this you are probably a fan of Chris Ware. Beyond the obvious, this book is interesting because it is rare. Reports indicate that Chris Ware actually collects this work because he doesn't like it.

The books itself is from a period when Chris Ware was still experimenting. The book over all is interesting and worth a read; especially because it chronicles, arguably, the most talented cartoonist of the 30-40 year old generation, which proceeds such legends as Crumb and Spiegelman. Long out of print, it is up to ones interest in Ware how much they are willing to pay. Any of the Acme Novelty Libraries or Quimby the Mouse, Jimmy Corrigan, however, will show you what his work is like.

Informative articles, detailed information for enthusiasts

In 1995, the Victoria & Albert put on an exhibition of Wedgwood to mark the 200th anniversary of the death of the founder, Josiah Wedgwood. I was fortunate to be in London on business and took in this amazing display of pottery. This book is a companion to that show and has several fine articles on the major pieces and the development of Wedgwood as a commercial enterprise and an art form.

The book also has the catalogues of the various displays and so provides much helpful information on major Wedgwood pieces for those who follow this kind of thing. I should also say that the V & A has an outstanding display of Wedgwood available every day. So, the next time you get to London you should head to the museum and take it in along with all the other wonderful pieces they have in their many halls.

The book has many color photos and many more in black and white. I think it still has value for Wedgwood enthusiasts and the curious as a general book rather than being an obsolete exhibition program.

Like his first book, Shadows of the Western Door, Winfield again dives into the supernatural happenings of Western New York. Unlike Shadows of the Western Door, in which the author retold stories of lore and experiences by others, A Ghosthunter's Journal is Winfield's own experiences. From shamans on the Res to Bigfoot, Winfield carefully wove yet another spellbinding look into what lies behind the veil. If you're a WNY History Buff or just your every day paranormal enthusiast, A Ghosthunter's Journal is a great book, and one you shouldn't miss.

Acceptance is something everyone seeks, and all of us want to find people who will love us as we love them. The quest for acceptance begins when we are children, as we seek approval and love from our family, and intensifies as we seek the mate whom we believe will make our lives complete. It ends only when we realize that God is the only one who can give us unconditional love and acceptance. For those who never find God, their quest never ends.

GOING FORWARDS WALKING BACKWARDS is the story of one man's struggle for love and acceptance. James S. Ware takes the reader on a fascinating journey into a man's lifelong search to find someone or something to make his life complete. The story begins with a young boy, raised by his grandmother, who was left alone when she passed away. Her dying wish was that her grandson not be returned to his mother. The boy was given to a man who had never raised children, and had no idea of how to instill values or responsibility. Consequently, the boy began to experiment with things that were not good for him, and by the time he was 13, his life had begun a downward spiral. He would later begin using drugs and alcohol, and get into one disastrous situation after another. Every time the young man thought he was "going forward", it turned out he was actually "walking backwards." He tried earnestly to make positive changes in his life, but a few detours in the midst of the changes resulted in more negative experiences.

After a series of failed relationships and a failed marriage, eventually this young man began to search for something different, something that would improve his life, and the lives of his two children. In time, the young man accepted Christ, and later dedicated himself to the Lord. The road he traveled did not easily improve, but the young man worked on strengthening his relationship with Christ, which eventually put his life back on the right track.

The joyous surprise in GOING FORWARDS WALKING BACKWARDS is not discovered until the last chapter of the book. James Ware's story is a powerful testimony to the awesome power and grace of God, written in such a way that almost everyone can relate to his story. I would be very much interested in reading other books by James S. Ware. He is a gifted storyteller, and this book is written in a way that will truly touch the reader.

Powerful, Unreleting, deeply flawed

Woolrich's incomplete novel of despair, revenge, and even love, takes the reader deep into the darkess abyss. Unfortunately, the novel was never completed and a discordently happy ending was appended to it. Nonetheless it is a fascinating novel: what would make a women take up her victim's life and enact retribution on those who had harmed her in her life? All Woolrich fans should definitely read this book: it is Woolrich in the 1960's -this time as gory and graphic as he could get away with.
