A pictorial "Ferrari" of history of architecture booksReview Date: 2007-08-27
PUBLISHER'S SYNOPSIS:
(326 black and white illustrations except the Abrams' edition having 416 illustrations, including 95 reconstructions, diagrams, and floor plans)
This volume begins with a comparison between the Parthenon and the Pantheon, whose simplicity and dignity represented a new level of sophistication in architecture based on a system of vaults and cement construction. The first part of the book examines the practices that originated in central Italy, the great complexes of the Republican era, and the projects of the Augustan age, culminating in the layout of the Forum. This is followed by analysis of the construction method known as opus caementicium, with examples of works from the complex of Trajan's Market to projects realized by Hadrian. The author goes on to consider the Rome of late antiquity, where key buildings provide powerful examples of the complex phenomenon of Imperial Rome. The book also discusses Roman architecture in such diverse areas as Thessalonica, Ephesus, Constantinople, Nimes, Verona and Pompeii, with an overview of developments in southern Italy and the provinces.

I liked the way in which the author covered the regional influences on architecture in the various parts of the Roman world, especially contrasting the East, with its substantial existing traditions, styles and techniques, with the "frontier" type of situation in the West, where the new introduction of Roman technologies and styles all but eclipsed those which had gone before.
The author's writing style seemed the relaxed intimations of a man comfortable with his mastery of the material and without the need to prove himself. I found a particular enjoyment in the tone of someone enjoying passing on the details of his favourite subject.
I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone interested in the way the Romans solved some of the universal challenges of a built environment.

As classic as the story itself is, it is the pen and watercolor illustrations that make this book a must read. This has to be one of the most beautiful children's books I have ever seen, with artwork that is Caldecott Medal-worthy. The rich detail and lush colorations make the animals of the tale simply pop out of the page. Using a "flyover" view also gives the drawings a cinematic feel that enlivens the action.
And just when you think you've finished the story, Ward provides backstory helps to not only understand the history of the tale, but also the choices she made for populating the barnyard. With this guide the reader will see that the author has featured rare "heirloom" breeds of animals in her illustration; the guide gives background on each breed and points each out on the story's pages. Truly a wonderful addition that enhances the enjoyment of the book for adults.
Very highly recommended!

Southern Colorado's best unknown riding mecca de-mystified!Review Date: 2004-08-15
Salida Singletrack has helped me to know the Upper Arkansas Valley better than I knew it before. I expected riders visiting here to benefit from a good guide book, but I never expected to have the book help me find new great rides right close to home.
Nathan's section for every "The Ride: Mileage Log" can help anyone with an odometer find the route. His descriptions are enticing and full of background information. Salida Singletrack is a fun book that's also very accurate and useful.
Pick up a copy of Salida Singletrack, then pay us a visit and find out just how good is some of Salida's lesser known riding.

Great Portable Fun!Review Date: 2006-05-03
In his clever Scratch & Solve Hangman, Mike Ward offers a neat twist on an old favorite. You know how instant lottery cards require you to scratch off the metallic finish to reveal what's underneath? That's exactly the way this book works.
For each of the 96 puzzles, there are three components:
*Silver eggs for A through Z
*A dotted-line stick figure on the gallows
*Numbered blanks at the bottom
Here's an example of how a puzzle works. For puzzle one in the Scratch & Solve Hangman #3, I guess the letter "E". When I scratch off the silver egg under "E", it shows the numbers 6 and 8. I go to the bottom of the page and fill in the letter "E" for blanks 6 and 8.
I then guess "R", which revealed a stick figure sticking his tongue out! This means that the letter "R" is NOT a part of solution. If I had revealed six of those faces--which indicates drawing in the head, arms, torso and feet of the body on the gallows--then I would have lost!
However, because I guessed the phrase (poached eggs) before I drew all six body parts, I win! (Admittedly, I had the head and both arms drawn in before I guessed it! Whew!)
This little book is very portable, providing amusement and distraction just about anywhere. Highly recommended if you love Hangman!
