The Greatest Gothic MysteryReview Date: 2002-10-10
The plots of Radcliffe's mysteries have been efficiently summarized by Russell Noyes in an introduction of 1956:
"The hero is a gentleman of noble birth, likely as not in some sort of disgrace; the heroine, an orphan-heiress, high-strung and sensitive, and highly susceptible to music and poetry and to nature in its most romantic moods. A prominent role is given to the tyrant-villain. He is a man of fierce and morose passions obsessed by the love of power and riches. The villain can usually be counted on to confine the heroine in the haunted wing of a castle because she refuses to marry someone she hates. Whatever the details, Mrs. Radcliffe generally manages the plot and action so that the chief impression is a sense of the young heroine's incessant danger. On oft-repeated midnight prowls about the gloomy passageways of a rambling, ruined castle, the heroine in a quiver of excitement (largely self-induced) experiences a series of hair-raising adventures and narrow escapes. Her emotional tension is kept to the pitch by a succession of strange sights and sounds . . . and by an assorted array of sliding panels, trap doors, faded hangings, veiled portraits, bloodstained garments, and even dark and desperate characters."

Buchanan takes on an entire town run by a powerful and ruthless familyReview Date: 2007-04-20
This leads to a chain of events where Buchanan is fighting the entire town, including Agry's hired guns. In typical Buchanan style, he faces the odds with a stoic determination and wit, never losing sight of his noble nature. At the end, he regains his money and even throws a few coins to Simon Agry, the man who repeatedly tried to have him killed.
A true hero in the mold of the man in the classic Western portrayal, Buchanan moves from place to place, fighting for just causes and generally leaving things in a better condition than they were in when he arrived.

ONE OF THE BETTER JONAS WARD BOOKSReview Date: 2008-02-23
Being no 'expert' but having read quite a few Jonas Ward books, I find this to be one of the better ones. Anyone seeing the movie BUCHANAN RIDES ALONE with Randolph Scott will know the plot of the novel, and Mr. Scott made a pretty good 'Tom Buchanan'.
All the 'Jonas Ward' books were written by an author named William R. Cox. Mr. Cox had been a writer all his life eventually writing for television in the 1950's for such productions as Zane Grey Theater, Bonanza, and The Virginian, among others. He began to write his own westerns under his real name, and then under the 'house name' of Jonas Ward for Fawcett Gold Medal westerns. Mr. Cox died July 7, 1988, while at work on his 81st western.
All of his 'Jonas Ward' Buchanan westerns are well plotted with a laudable character named Tom Buchanan. Buchanan is always being side-tracked to help both strangers and friends having need. Along the route of the series, his side kick Coco Bean a prize fighter enters the books. All books are worth the read.

Outstanding overview of research on Catholic lay ministryReview Date: 2003-08-11
The phenomenon of lay (non-ordained) ministers serving in the Catholic Church has been on the rise for some three decades. But serious research and theological reflection has been sparse and rather scattered until recent years. In this book, author Zeni Fox summarizes the major studies of professional lay ministers; the writings of theologians, liturgists, canonists, and scripture scholars; and official statements from popes, Vatican offices, and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Following this extensive survey, Fox offers a concise analysis of key themes and values discerned at the "intersection of present experience and the tradition," and she concludes by suggesting steps to foster lay ministry in the future.
Fox presents the research from her unique perspective as a church professional, seminary professor, consultant to the US bishops' conference, and an active participant in many of the recent discussions.
This is a revised edition. The first appeared in 1997, on the brink of a new wave of research and dialogue at the national level. This 2002 edition, thoroughly revised and expanded, incorporates the studies, symposia, and statements of the intervening five years. Fox added four subsections and one entirely new chapter, and she carefully revised other chapters with updated statistics and references to recent developments.
The result - the most comprehensive overview of research and reflection on lay ecclesial ministry in the Catholic Church.
