Review Date: 1999-05-07
This text has a chapter written by Professors Marty Sapp, R.L. McNeely, and Jose Torres on how to apply Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) to the process of dying for aged African Americans and Latinos. This chapter describes how to adapt REBT to African Americans and Latinos. Clearly, this text addresses the social and psychological issues of African Americans and people of color. In addition, within this second edition, Professors Marty Sapp, R.L. McNeely, and Jose Torres have a second chapter entitled "Hypnotherapy: A Useful Modality for Serving African American and Latino Clients and Patients." This chapter presented an innovative approach for using hypnosis with these groups. In summary, this text will continue to be a classic, and it has many practical applications for African Americans.

An angel speaks from Heaven
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-03
This is a superlative collection of poems emanating, as the author says, from the tears of an angel witnessing the sufferings of mankind from heaven. Each angelic tear becomes a poem commenting on political, spiritual, and ecological events which are currently of importance. This is a beautifully wrought and lyrical cycle of poetry which will take its place as a minor classic.

An early 20th century classic on the act of faith

The question of what goes on -- rationally, psychologically, and in terms of grace -- when a person comes to belong spiritually to God in Christ -- the theology of the "act of faith" -- has long been one of the most difficult questions in theology. Jean Mouroux tackles it bravely and profoundly, to make for one of my favorite theology books. He combines a deep knowledge of St. Thomas Aquinas and St. John of the Cross on the relation of intellect, heart, and faith, with a powerful "personalist" approach, a little uncommon in the time between the Vatican councils, that didn't allow theology to become abstract conceptual analysis, but came at the relationship between God and the soul with a more properly calibrated intelligence. And he keeps it short! If you're not theologically trained, you'll probably prefer A. Carrel's classic "A Journey to Lourdes", which is similarly penetrating but much more narrative in style.

Not Just for Black Women; spoken in a Black Woman's Voice
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1999-05-06
This book wraps itself around the reader's heart and rocks it gently yet firmly. Rev. Cheryl D. Ward witnesses to the amazing power of her faith, how her life journey provided the fertilizer, the essence of decay, death and loss, out of which she grabbed her life upward into her ministry. The reader knows she speaks from love and plain truth. She speaks from God's participation in her life. She has been there.

This book reads like a series of sermons; each chapter is worth its own prayer and meditation. She speaks to human beings with the voice of an American Black woman, a preacher to every man and woman who wants to live with God in his or her life. Each chapter offers a contemporary, life situation everyone can understand and appreciate. Reverend Cheryl lays out all the good and bad in each situation as she offers her loving perspective on what options God offers one for emerging a better person. Part of her universal appeal is the language of television commercials, situation comedies, Motown lyrics: language that those of us who grew up in the second half of twentieth century America. And, her conversational style makes reading this book a personal, loving conversation with me about my life. Keep some tissues handy for there'll be lots of tears of sorrow, anger and joy while on this testimonial journey.

The Ice Age Returns is a fantastic look at Nashville's triumphant first season in the NHL. I am a huge fan of Nashville, and this book was a fantastic look at some of the games I missed. It has great photography, great reviews of the games, and great player bios. I'd suggest this book for anyone who likes the Predators.

Draws irony between the timeless space

Iced At The Ward Burned At The Stake And Other Poems is an anthology of free-verse poems by Utah journalist, film critic and writer Paul Swenson that exist in the moment, and draws irony between the timeless space between patterned verses. An ever-flowing treasury of lingering imagery. Exejesus: Jesus was a women's man/Crossed Hades Street to meet/The Samaritan at the well/Told her everything she'd done/Between Galilee, Gethsemane,/Had some fun with Magdalene/Wouldn't leave the wedding/'Till the wine was gone/Healed the infirm woman on the street/Laid down Martha's broom--/Save it for my tomb he said/Wished for Mary's perfumed hair--/Lord, he loved the way it felt/When she caressed his feet/Hated to board the boat/To the disciples, smell of fish.

Non the less, a very interesting book. As is her others.

I hope this helps.

What You See Is What You Get

The authors have undertaken a monumental task in attempting to tell the history of various Native American peoples through a geographic prizm. That said, Compton does a reasonably accurate job.

The difficulty lies in the fact that many Native People were semi-nomadic in habit. For example, the Dghelia Sioux people (The Omaha, Ponca, etc) migrated onto the eastern Great Plains from the Ohio River Valley in recent pre-historical times. And the Shawnee, a well-known nation, only settled into their Ohio "homeland" when the original inhabitants--the Miamiwek--felt pressure from across the Appalachians from the whites and Iroquois, and invited the SHawnee to settle in.

Compton has presented recent theories on these and other migrations and eventual settlements with clarity and accuracy, and has done about a good a job as anyone could expect. His coverage of the sedentary peoples (eg-Hopi) is also first-class.

His history has more breadth than depth, but given the scope of the work, that is understandable.

All in all, a very useful resource book.

Sex is a reflection of God

Gabriel M. Makhlouf, MD, PhD, FRCP, Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, Richmond, VA

This is a most profound meditation on the spiritual significance of sex. What is differentiated in humans is a reflection of that which is undifferentiated in God. I knew the author well as my friend and mentor at the time he was writing this book in the early fifties. He was a remarkable, erudite and humble man, a Jesuit priest and Chaplain to the Catholic Students at the University of Liverpool. The contents of this book were incorporated in his homilies. The style is clear and passionate, reflecting his enthusiasm for the deep spiritual meaning of sex and the goodness of God's creation.
