This is a book that grew in power from chapter to chapter. Here are some quotes that I think speak for themselves. "The task of imagination is to imagine the real." "The imagination is particularly well suited to form a pathway to reality because it can keep opposites together in a thought-provoking analogy or in a metaphor packed with new insight, or in a masterfully constructed story." "Truths that are mysterious, paradoxical and ironic become integrated into a person's life not through argument, but through action. These types of truths are 'higher than reason.' Having done the truth, that person now knows it from the inside." "Imagination liberates the person from the confines of the self." "Because imagination is the power through which a person escapes from the self and becomes actively related to the world, Schelling sees imagination as a form of love." "Art is not primarily 'self-expression,' but a sort of self-identification with another. That activity not only enhances the self, it constitutes a sort of report on a reality that has come in touch with the human." "Imagination gives expression to what lies deepest within the human: the spiritual life of will and reason as they strike a harmony with universal reason and the absolute will of God. The imagination, at its most profound, seeks to give expression to that harmony with God." If you love these quotes, you'll love this book.

Catholicism for Thinking People

I picked this book up in the library because the liner notes sounded interesting. I was astounded at the straighforward, common sense teachings in this book. I didn't know Catholic Priests wrote like this. This book makes Christianity accessible to those of us who have trouble with some of the more "magical" concepts like the resurrection and ascension. Father O'Donnell takes the basics of the faith, like the Creed, Lords Prayer, Ten Commandments, and the Beatitudes and makes them understandable, real and reasonable. I highly recommend this book. Give it to your "rational" friends who say, "but none of that stuff makes sense." This book will change their minds.

Great compilation of short articles
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-03
This book is a great compilation of the various topics associated with family businesses. It is written in short article form, making it especially useful as a quick reference guide to very specific issues.

The issues addressed can be either very general (like what is a family business and general statistics on them), to very specific (like estate planning, succession, board recruitment, conflict resolution). The authors also address the topic from different perspectives; there are chapters on people entering family businesses (family members and non family members), on consultants to fmaily businesses, on spouses of family business members, on investors in family businesses, and the expected focus on family managers in family businesses.

I have not seen a better compilation of topics. Despite the fact that it is a compilation, all topics are addressed with enough depth to make it sufficient reading on any individual topic of family business.

This book is great for small group discussions

One of the best things about Family Time with God is that it provides a very simple format for leading a family through a daily devotional, but it has proven to be just as useful in a small group setting. The introduction to a scripture passage as well as the questions for discussion at the bottom are invaluable for me as I lead my group. This is good stuff! I recommend it highly.

LOVE AND DEATH IN NEW ORLEANS . . .

"I am conscious they are only trivial," wrote Lafcadio Hearn from New Orleans in 1880 to his friend H. E. Krehbiel, speaking of the weird little sketches he was publishing from time to time in the columns of the Daily Item, the New Orleans newspaper which first gave him employment in the city where he spent the ten years from 1877 to 1887. "But I fancy," he goes an, "that the idea of the fantastics is artistic. They are my impressions of the strange life of New Orleans. They are dreams of a tropical city. There is one twin idea running through them all - Love and Death. And these figures embody the story of life here, as it impresses me."

36 stories by Lafcadio Hearn

Introduction by Charles Woodward Hutson

Other books in the Wildside Fantasy Classics series (all highly recommended) include:

The Witch of Prague, by F. Marion Crawford One of Cleopatra's Nights, by Theophile Gautier Some Chinese Ghosts, by Lafcadio Hearn The Well at World's End, by William Morris The Phantom Ship, by Capt. Frederick Marryat
