Excellent Hard-Boiled Detective Pulp Fiction At Its Silliest Best

First of all, the writing here is spectacular . . . and funny. The Dan Turner stories were clearly written to be over the
top "Her gat spat liquid death . . . " or "Her gams could halt an out-of-control city bus". The writing is crisp, punchy and
very colorful (and sometimes hyperbolic). Nothing here is meant to be taken seriously and it's a lot of fun to read. On a
more historical note, these stories were part of the on-going evolution of the hard-boiled detective genre which started earlier
in the 1930s with the novels of Dashiell Hammett and James M. Cain which would later be taken over my Mickey Spillane. It's
an era that's gone now and can only be taken seriously for its escapist value. But, oh, what writing!

I haven't got the book yet but it does look interesting. The Benoni and Benko Gambit are two fighting openings and it would
be cool to see what new, fresh, and original anaylses there. However since this just came out, I'll wait to there are some
more reviews out on amazon as this is the first one( although this is not techinically a review). Someone take the leap of
faith and buy it!

A decorated Army Veteran, now police Detective, Joe Hanlon is investigating the death a 'Mafia' type crime boss, when he discovers
more than what meets the eye. What happens next no one could ever imagine, not even those involved in the very carefully
planned murder....
-Part "Sopranos", part "X-Files", and part "Fugitive", this murder mystery includes elements of each. With exciting action, romance, high tech, mystery and 'edge of your seat' suspense, I could not put this book down until I reached the end. I have not had so much excitement reading a novel since "The Hunt for Red October".
This novel kept me up late at night, as each chapter would reveal the latest twist in plot. "Death and Duty" is an excellent read, and I look forward to Byron Ward's upcoming sequel of this excellent adventure.

Up to this point (1960) there had been published nine volumes of "The Best From Fantasy and Science Fiction." Robert P. Mills
carefully examined the back issues and culled 40 stories which he felt should have been included in those volumes. Then he
eliminated any which had appeared in ANY other anthology. The result is this thick, 416-page paperback.

I throughly enjoyed this book. More importantly I found easy to understand and easy to implement strategies to help me manage
and lead people to the levels of productivity that I knew they were capable! I know that others must need and want help with
the issues that we all deal with managing and motivating people today. This is what everyone has been looking for.
Kim Ward's conversational and entertaining approach to explaining not only the issues, but his common sense instructions to solutions make this the most useful and valuable decision and management tool I've seen to date!
I'm thrilled to have found such a "grass roots" solutions approach for current everyday problems.

THE EVE OF POPE BENEDICT'S BRAZILIAN ODYSSEY SERVES TO REMEMBER THIS GREAT WORK OF OUR SPIRITUALITY IN ACTION

Review Date: 2007-05-08
Review Date: 2007-05-08
This book, first published around thirty three years ago and passing through numerous reprints as evidenced in a search of
this mighty amazon, speaks to us more powerfully now than ever regarding the strength of God's love among the poor bringing
greater influence and power than all multicorporations and warmongers.
But that is to give too great a political emphasis to the pure Gospel message of GOd's peace and justice which it contains. It only rings from an earlier generation when the great Dom Helder Camara necesarilly for those times reviles the USSR and Red China as well. Now the USSR is no more and China's communism merely serves as slave factory for Walmart's and other multi-national capitalist corporations.
But that is to give too political an aspect to this pure and ideal Good News to the poor and the powerless and the oppressed and the victims. That only brings too secular a note to this divine accounting of the power of God's peace and love to act within our world despite any and all materialist forces arrayed against us.
We must now read this book carefully page by page tearfully and in joy as we remember the Beatific Vision of Christ's Kingdom of Peace and Justice and Freedom from all oppression, a Kingdom founded upon the firm and permanent rock of peace, and compassion and of Love, the fruition of the Gospel mission of Jesus Christ.
Filled with wonderful black and white photographs of Dom Helder Camara as he preaches among the poor, this book reads as beautifully, as challengingly, as any great Spiritual Work, as any prophetic book, and concludes with the Prayer of Saint Francis which has since become so well known.
Upon reading this book you will wonder why Dom Helder Camara himself has not yet been declared Santo Subito, and you will thirst for more of his works and writings, such as Spiral of Violence or Me llaman el obispo rojo: Dom Hélder Camara (C3S) or The Church and Colonialism: The Betrayal of the Third World or Revolution Through Peace [World Perspectives Vol. 45] or Into Your Hands Lord, etc. etc.
But this present slender volume is all you will ever need, in Faith, in Hope, in Charity for our journey to the Kingdom. May we get there altogether in the end.
Please read this book, and know filling your faithful heart the Spirit of Hope and of Consolation, and of God's Everlasting Love, and receive the courage and strength to act.

Reflect for a minute upon what you were doing at the age of 24. Maybe you were finishing up college or graduate school; perhaps
you were starting your first "real job." Now imagine if that job was to be a teacher with no chalkboard and no books, or
a computer programmer with only an out-dated typewriter. It's hard to imagine, because we take such tools for granted. Our
jobs may not be impossible without them, but we would have to tap into our creative and intellectual resources as never before.
Would you persevere?
Here we have a non-fictional account of a young doctor, fresh out of medical school, who has been virtually abandoned in the remote hills of Colombia, South America, to serve his "rural year." With only the most rudimentary medical tools, no mentor to provide seasoned advice, and a telephone service that goes on vacation when it rains, it's time for Dr. Huber to sink or swim (literally)!
When paltry medical resources, an animated cast of townspeople, and the natural drives of a young man-namely wine, women, & song-coalesce, this book is the result.
Be forewarned-this is not your typical buffed and polished work of literature. The book's best offering is its almost raw presentation of blood & guts, wit, and the occasional irony. You will experience Villahermosa as if you were there. You will certainly smile, and probably laugh out loud (I did!). But the weak at heart need not apply-the stories, frequently heart-warming and almost always humorous, can also be gruesome at times.
I loved this book because the stories are shocking, hilarious, and TRUE. It has allowed me to experience a country that I would be, regrettably, too afraid to visit today. And perhaps most importantly, it is inspirational to see what man can do when armed, not with the conveniences that we commonly take for granted in the United States, but with imagination, drive and the desire to heal.

Among More's last works, "A Dialogue of Comfort Against Tribulation" is one of his most important. There are scholarly editions,
from Yale and the University of Indiana Press, and there are popular editions from Everyman and Septer that are available.
More wrote this book in the Tower of London as he awaited execution, but the style is not the raging virtupretive one he
used when confuting Tyndale. There are "merry tales" such as the one about the German who was never satiate his own praise,
in Book Three Chapter 10, but most of the book is given over to meditation on death. More has two characters, Anthony a
young man, and Vincent, his aged Uncle. They are placed in Budapest and they are fearful of an impending invasion by the
Turks. More's story has been read as thinly veiled alagory of his own situation. Anthony standing in for More's son-in-law
William Roper, and Vincent for More himself. That may be putting it too simplistically, but it is a good starting point.
Unlike More's best known work "Utopia," "A Dialogue of Comfort" was not written in Latin, but in English. I doubt one
in a thousand readers have read More's classic in the original Latin, but everyone who reads English can read More's "Dialogue
of Comfort" without the aid of translation. This is a spiritual book. In this book More asks where shall comfort
come from. More answers his own question: "For God is and must be your comfort, and not I."

I just finished reading the Fred Ward books "Diamonds" and "Rubies and Sapphires" in his gem series, and I was very pleasantly
surprised. These books are entertaining as well as informative, and found myself telling obscure facts about the different
gemstones to my friends and family. I was in the market for a ring with my fiance, and so found the books particularly insightful.
Along with the writing, the color photography was absolutely sinful, with the most striking pictures of jewelry I have ever
seen. Breathtaking. Definitely a must read, even if you think you aren't that interested in gems in the first place. I
did think that the price of the books was exceedingly high, however, and I wish they would market them as an entire collection
instead of just the separate books.
But all in all, wonderful read!
