A different time

I had heard of Tarzan Brown when I was young. He seemed a mysterious character, with not much known about him. I enjoyed learning about him, what a really great runner he was in a time when 100 runners in a race was a lot. The author interviewed many of those who knew him, including his wife, and gives an idea what it must have been like to be a Narragansett Indian in those days.

For anyone who loves the freedom of running (which Tarzan did), and is interested in life in New England 70 years ago, this book is a real find. You will also learn more about Johnny Kelley (the elder), Clarence DeMar, Les Pawson, Bricklayer Kennedy, etc. This was a time when money was scarce, and runners had to be amateurs- Tarzan once won a refrigerator in a race, but he had no electricity so gave it away. At one point he won 17 races in a row; at his peak he was brilliant. He won consecutive marathons over a 2-day period, taking a night train from NY to NH to get to the 2nd one. Tarzan had quite a spirit, and I thank the author for his painstaking research.

Embers Of The Dead by Roy Lewis is a consistently enthralling and quite tactfully authored novel on the life and times of Eric Ward. Readers will follow Eric through the transition of everyday criminal lawyer through the endless twists and turns of an investigation into the seemingly vindictive intentions of a man who destroyed his past and marriage. Embers Of The Dead is filled with enveloping plot changes involving murder, Nazi death camp remembrance, drugs, illegal immigration and prostitution, sure to enrapture the reader and very highly recommended to the realistic-fiction, mystery-thriller and general readers for its more than consuming plot.

Unique Love Story of Utah Wilderness
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-15
Ward Roylance began exploring the Southern Utah wilderness in the early 1940s. He remained enamored of it the rest of his life. This book, a bit idiosyncratic and biographical at times, is a log of his backcountry travels, a plea for wilderness preservation and, most importantly, an almost childlike description of the profound effect wilderness had on him and his wife. Numberous black and white photos. Ward's wife Gloria's poetry is quoted here and there in the book. To the Roylances the Utah Wilderness and Colorado Plateau were "ineffable." Their plain, but sincere, love of wilderness is evident throughout the book. Ward and Gloria's words touched me like only a few others --- Thoreau, Abbey, Emerson, Muir and Leopold. This is a very special book!

Great Information - Easy to follow
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-26
Before starting my garden, I reviewed several books at the library. They were hard to follow and did not keep my attention, so I started gardening on my own, hit or miss. When I got my hands on Sue Fisher's book I could not put it down. The information is presented so clear and logical as if she is talking directly with you one-on-one.

You can learn the basics of everything or you can explore details of specific interests such as using color to create the illusion of a larger garden, planting in containers or planting in drought prone climates. Within the plant directory and the pictures throughout the book every plant is listed with both its technical and common name.

This book is excellent and easy to follow. The photographs and sketches are tremendously helpful.

Great book if you need to know this stuff
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-25
I am a software developer of cash managment products so I know the stuff from the inside out, but I never had a business view of the area. This explains clearly, quickly, and readably the essentials of field. It explains the business use of all of the products I have built (ACH, Wires, Acct Trx, IR, etc.). Remarkably enough, it was really interesting and a very quick read--2 short evenings. Certainly, a great starter book.

For those interested in a deft, thorough, dispassionate, and readibly cogent presentation of theism, and a well-honed critique of anti-theistic nostrums, this work is a must.
