I reluctantly started this book, then bought it and found many truths I hadn't learned before. Navigating in the spiritual realm is an awesome skill, but with the explanations given by Matthew's communication with his mother, I reached a new level of understanding. The reaction to suicides, our freedoms (once we learn where we can go), the explanation of classical music created on earth (no, not dictated) and on and on, blew my mind.

After reading over 80 books on metaphysics, I was incredulous at how much I learned here. I also recommend "My Descent into Death", an account equal to this one, I believe, although stemming from a totally different experience.

A must read for all those whose minds and hearts are open to know what happens after "death"...what is it like in other side or Nirvana? This is like a Harry Potter book, but the only difference is this is non-fiction. I feel it's true.. follow your intuition and you'll know what's true. :)

I was given a copy of this book to read about 2 years ago, by a new friend whom I had just told about the death of my youngest daughter, eleven years earlier. Even after eleven years, any parent can tell you how the grief of losing a child is always a part of you, an empty hole in your soul. Even so, I had come to terms with my daughter's death and had moved on in life. So, when I was given this book, part of me was hopeful, while for the most part I was hesitant and extremely skeptical.
How can I begin to describe the "Omg, this makes sense" awakening I began to feel as I read page after page, chapter after chapter? This book changed my life - and that is an understatement! Reading Matthew became the catalyst for a series of sychronicities that led me down many intertwining roads in my own journey towards healing, spiritual enlightenment, my own purpose in life, and eventually the supreme joy of communicating with my own daughter.
To say that I highly recomend this book is also an understatement. I wish more people knew about this book, so I hope you'll all spread the word after reading it. It is a definitive must read for grieving parents and anyone else who has lost someone special in their life, or for those who ask, "Who am I, and why am I here?" (In fact, that was the one question I asked, that led to this book and everything else since).
I wish all of you a most remarkable and joyous journey of your own.

What a wonderful book and I highly recommend it to everyone interested in knowing what life "on the other side" is like. I admit I was skeptical at first. As I read Matthew's accounts of life on the other side I grew more amazed at his descriptions. Many things I had never even thought about were addressed fully in this book. Since we won't know until we actually get there I can only hope that life "on the other side" is how Matthew describes it in this book. What peace and joy it provides for those of us inquisitive enough to be looking for these answers. Special thanks to Suzanne for her committment to write this book and please know I have already ordered her second book "Revelations For A New Era".

After reading the book "On Becoming a Survivor", I found it very overwhelming to imagine what two people had to endure to survive physically and mentally. As a practical nurse and secretary, I would recommend the book to anyone who has been a victim of a violent crime or know of anyone who has been victimized.
In reading this book a victim can learn how Dr. Reister was able to work through this ordeal, which in turn can help others learn how to work through their own victimization.

I found Dr. Reister's book to be a moving account of his ordeal and his insights about the recovery process. Since he and I have known each other for many years both as former colleagues at Boston College and as friends, I appreciate his desire to share his difficult journey for the benefit of others.

As a psycholotherapist, I recommend this book to victims of personal violence.

Bravo, Barry!

Dr. Barry Reister recounts the story of his girl friend's rape while their two attackers took turns holding a gun to his head. For reasons they still do not understand, the attackers let them go after two hours of horror. The attack took place in Los Angeles while Dr. Reister was Assistant Dean for Counseling and Health Services at Loyola Marymount University.
Dr. Reister, whose Ph.D. is from Indiana University, is a psychologist now in private counseling practice. He has been a member of the counseling staffs of a number of colleges and universities. After recounting his brush with violent crime, his slim volume walks the reader through the steps to emotional recovery from such an experience. After the traumatized stage, healthy recovery should move to reconstruction. He tells us how to let other people help us-"Calling in the troops," as he says. This includes taking others with you for your day in court to face your attacker. He gives us principles for staying safe, and, finally, how to resume life with a new perspective. This 40-page volume closes with a useful listing by states of the various coalitions against domestic violence and their telephone numbers. The book is recommended for anyone struggling to recover from a violent crime.

Barry Reister's graphic account of his personal experience as a victim of violent crime make the guidance he gives other victims all the more credible. Dr. Reister provides a detailed description of his frightening journey that will resonate with those who have suffered fron violence at the hands of others. From his initial account of the chilling and brutal crime; through the psychological damage he suffered; to his fears and trepidations in the courtroom when his facing his tormentors, Dr. Reister provides insight and healing advice to victims who have been traumatized by violence.
This little book is not "preachy" or overly academic. It provides help to anyone who has been victimized or is working with victims of violent crime, by conveying his message in a very personal, empathic and useful way. It is short, yet covers the important ground that is part of this type of traumatic event.
Dr, Reister's "healing" book will be greatly appreciated by his fellow travelers who have been on this terrible journey. In the end,he provides the steps to recovery and the hope of a new beginning.

This is a book about courage....the courage to face your demons and the courage to do something about them.

As a survivor of a traumatic event Dr. Reister puts his personal and emotional journey into words that are both disturbing on one level and instructive, informative, hopeful, and encouraging on another. As a psychologist he has the knowledge and skill to articulate nurturing and practical guidelines for others.

It is a wonderful resource for both survivors and healers looking for ways to turn helplessness into action and empowerment.

If you are a fan of mystery, sci-fi, romance, comedy, and/or adventure - READ THIS BOOK!!! I won't discuss the story line (buy the book!), but I will say that for a Florida girl I enjoyed the fact that the story takes place in the Tampa Bay area. The characters are out of the norm, yet still very loveable and anyone can relate to one of them. The story reads well - the flow of words is smooth, making it an easy read. The plot itself does keep you wondering throughout the book (that's why it's a mystery). It has a taste of sci-fi, but not too much to get in the way of the story. The two main characters have an established relationship, which lends to a fresh kind of romance. The author's sense of humor is the delicious little treat you don't expect out of a standard mystery. The enjoyment of sharing in the adventure of the characters is what makes a person want to pick up a book and read it. WARNING!!! Once you finish reading this book, you will be hooked on the series.

I've never read a mystery in my life until now : ) For some mysterious reason, this book found its way into my hands and I found myself eagerly involved and pleasantly surprised. Monty and Denton provide a passionate power to a story which weaves small threads into a beautiful array of spider-like webs. As a woman who's sported wild, colorful versions of a flat top and worn Levi's most of her life, I could easily identify with the tomboyish, yet heart-centered character of Monty. The spiral dance between Denton and Monty made for a charming yet strained romance which encased a plot that was out of this world. William Mize's beautifully-descriptive style of writing made my mind work and my heart race, and I'd highly recommend "Resurrection Angel" to anyone on this planet, or others.

As a long time fan of the mystery novel, I found that Resurrection Angel both followed some of the general rules of the genre, but also bent a few of those rules and took its own path.

I enjoyed the character development of the two main characters of the book, Denton Ward and Monty Crocetti. By allowing both to have all to human flaws and weaknesses, Mr. Mize creates characters who are multi dimensional, and therefore more interesting than your average, 'hard boiled' private [eye]. As a woman, I especially enjoyed that the character of Monty was intelligent and tough, and not in the book as a plot device with the entire function of making the male character seem more macho.

The secondary characters are also well realized, and well written - there are no cardboard cutter 'bad guys' in this novel.

The plot of the novel is also somewhat different than your average mystery; including such aspects as as psychic abilities and alien abductions, and also has some unexpected twists and turns as it leads towards a very satisfactory ending.

I enjoyed the book very much, and look forward to the next installment in the adventures of Denton Ward and Monty Crocetti

...perhaps he'll do it again. I'm a friend of the author, but have only recently read the book. I was amazed. Bill's writing style is magnificent. I would recommend this book to anyone. I'm not going to bother with telling the story over in my review, because everyone else's reviews have already told you. Instead, I'll focus on the author. Even when he's not hard at work on the sequel to Resurrection Angel, his genius shows. In his personal journal, and in his conversations with friends, his writing style is still amazing. I think he does it without even trying. If you're into mysteries, definitely buy this book. Even if you're not a fan of mysteries, I still recommend this book for its style. Act fast, folks, because Resurrection Angel is slated to go out-of-print in August!

I originally got this book because I've had the pleasure of interacting with the author online and have always appreciated his creativity, wit and writing style in that forum. To read over 400 pages of his fiction was an extension of that pleasure. I don't usually read mystery novels because I get tired of the same old gumshoe approach to storytelling. Knowing Will's sense of humor and unique take on life in general, it didn't surprise me to discover that there's not one piece of gum on this mystery's shoes. Denton and Monty are unique characters that I found refreshingly different from the run-of-the-mill sleuths ~ they remind me of a punk rock/pyschic version of a cross between The Thin Man and The Bickersons. I enjoyed barreling through each chapter as I followed a case that took me out of this world and back to again. I highly recommend "Resurrection Angel" to anyone who likes a good new-fashioned page-turner with heart.

When I first went to camp back when I was 11 I loved hearing the Tajar Tales. They are campfire classics. Sadly now that I work at the same Girl Scout Camp I first heard the story's the Tajar Tales are banned there. The story's a great when told around a campfire and even though the Tajar can no longer roam the woods where I work, he will always roam the imagination. I strongly reccomend this book.

This is a classic camp tale told each summer throughout the USA. At Clearwater Camp... it continues to be an annual event that campers and counselors looked forward to. Flying teacups and that wicked Tajar offer opportunities for the imagination to run wild and campers still initiate their own stories upon hearing the wonderful tale of this mythical animal. A story that can be enjoyed by one and all - this edition has wonderful illustrations that should not be missed.

Beautiful Little Story
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-04
I found this to be a very charming book that shares an endearing message. Told in a fairy tale like fashion, this is the story of an old man who lives in a small house in the middle of a dreary looking place "near nowhere and close to forgotten," filled with, basically, piles and piles of junk and scrap metal. However, despite his sad circumstances, the old man never seems to lose hope and we don't see him complaining about his situation as many people probably would do. Instead the man just keeps working to clean up the junk and, most importantly, he keeps dreaming. Every night he dreams of living in a vibrant forest full of life until one day he comes across a peice of garbage that gives him an idea. "The idea grew roots and sprouted" and eventually the man has built an entire forest, complete, with animals, out of the junk. Though not as beautiful as the forest in his dreams, he never loses hope. Eventually a pair of birds come to nest in the tin forest, bringing with them seeds, which eventually grow into plants, which attract other animals. Over time the tin forest is overgrown with a real forest and real animals and low, the old man has turned his dreary home into the vibrant forest of his dreams.

The illustrations are enchanting. The story begins with pictures of a dull and misty gray landscape and, throughout the book, develope into a dreamy forest of golds and greens. The beautiful artwork enforces the fairy tale like style of the story.

I read this book to my son, who is 19 months old, and with the text being short and sweet, it was able to keep his attention all the way through. However, I don't expect that he'll be able to fully appreciate the beautiful atmosphere that the illustrations create for a couple more years. (At his age he is more drawn to bright, bold colored illustrations and the greys of this book didn't quite grab his attention.)

All in all, it is a beautiful little story with a great message: No matter what your circumstances are, never let them dictate your attitude or your future. Never stop dreaming.

The story is touching and the illustrations are haunting. The ethos of the old man, to make something out of seemingly nothing, is a wonderful trait that many would be lucky to emulate. The language is poetic and the artwork striking. I would recommend this book to be part of any school library collection for its content, language, images and message.

I was drawn into this book the first time by the beautifully intricate illustrations. It has a dark, lonely feel to it, and reminds me somewhat of Maurice Sendak's work (especially the work of Dear Mili). On a second read, I enjoyed how the text is spare and achingly poetic. It's just a gorgeous, gorgeous book.

The Tin Forest is recommended for readers from 4-8, but this book, to me, is a wonderful book for all ages. The story teaches the lesson of hanging onto one's dream, of not letting it go, of nourishing it, tending to it, until it indeed sprouts leaves and blossoms into a life of its own. The old man constantly held onto his dream, and never gave up what he wanted to achieve. He had hope and that hope spurred him on. The forest he constantly dreamed of became a reality.

He lived in forgotten place, where he was surrounded by trash and objects that others once wanted, but no longer did. He tirelessly cleared away the trash, organized it, and dreamed at night of his forest with wild animals and lush flowers. One day, the idea came to him of making his own forest, if one was not going to spout up amidst all of the garbage. He made a forest of "things", a forest of tin, fashioned only after his own imagination and the books he devoured each night. He made trees, and flowers, and plants and the wild creatures that would inhabit his forest. Then one day, a visitor arrived in the form of a colorful bird, eating the crumbs the old man gave him, and singing his thanks back to the man. Sadly, the bird left the next morning, which left the old man very lonely.

Yet, the next day, the old man awoke to the melody of his visitor and his mate. They brought seeds to plant and decided to make their home here, in the tin forest. Soon, green shoots sprouted, flowers bloomed and various wild animals came to the forest to make their home. . . . "And in the house lived an old man who never stopped dreaming."

This book is just precious and the illustrations are just as wonderful and precious. I absolutely LOVED this book! A wonderful tale of teaching children that nothing is beyond their grasp.

"There was once a wide, windswept place . . . . but where there is a dream, hope can grow."

Not only is this a book a great read but, a great reference guide too! You can use this book in more than one way. You can read it just for the fun of it & laugh at the reality of man. Or it can be used as a sort of encyclopedia of information on bachelorhood. For men, it is like a safe haven of permission to be who they really are. For women, it will (at the very least) help them understand that men are men & that is what they tend to do best. This is my second time having read the book, which is why I am writing this. I read it a while ago but have been reflecting on it ever since, so I figured I had to read it again. With the easy guide-like format I can just pick it up anytime, find where I want to be, hand it to a guest for something to flip through as I make some coffee, even grab it for an emergency guide of info along the journey of the bachelor life. Buy it, read it then, buy another one for a gift. No, don't give your only copy away! You need it for your coffee table or, better yet, for sittin' on the Throne! This is the thing to hand down from father to son for generations to come.

One can learn so much from The Ultimate Bachelors Guide. It is a well organized, well written, comical book for anyone. As I turned the pages, I couldn't keep myself from smiling and laughing. It was quite amusing how I discovered characteristics of my male friends lying right in the text of the book. After reading it, I felt it was a perfect gift for my older brother who recently turned 21. This book really got me interested in comedy, and I attended a comedy club for the first time, and LOVED it, just as I loved the book. I recommend the book for both men and woman of all ages.

SEVEN DAYS by Sammie Ward is a mystery involving military personnel and murder in the Officer's Quarters. Lt. Col. Victor Sexton had a week left in the military before retiring when the murder of a female Lieutenant occurred in her quarters on base. There was no one around at the time of the crime except her married lover's wife, who had followed them. Sexton wasn't interested in her story about seeing another man on the scene. Sexton saw it as a way to take the pressure off. Meanwhile, a former commander's wife set him up with a blind date. He wasn't very interested, but because of his relationship with the commander who now a senator, he agreed to go. The blind date, Dominique, wasn't interested in him either, that is until she saw him. He was the same man she had a two week affair with two years ago which abruptly ended when he left Germany and didn't tell her as much as good-bye. She also had a vested interest in solving the mystery of the murdered woman because she was a nurse under her command. Soon another nurse died in a very similar way and Sexton knew he must solve this case before the killer got Dominique. The pressure was on.

Sammie Ward created a mystery with a lot of tension, hot romantic scenes and hidden agendas. The characters were well developed and the plot kept the suspense going until the end. There was even suspense in the rekindled affair between Victor and Dominique. Would they succeed this time or was Dominique still too angry at his abrupt departure two years ago? It was a real page turner that I couldn't put down until the last word. It was an excellent read for those who love mystery entwined with romance. You got plenty of both in this excellent book.

Lieutenant Colonel Victor Sexton is not a complicated man. He likes things simple; so simple, in fact, that after his retirement from the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID), he's looking forward to settling into a low-key life of co-managing the Cadence Supper Club, a local nightclub owned by his brother, Gerald. Other prospects, such as a career in politics, tempt Victor, but he's resolved to getting some much-needed rest after a long life of service and sacrifice. All he has to do is wait seven days, and his dreams of a new life finally become a reality.

Suddenly, a series of events erupt in quick succession that threaten the cherished stability and simplicity that Victor craves. First, he unexpectedly re-enters the life of the lovely Captain Dominique Frazier, officer in the Army Nurses Corp, with whom he had a brief but torrid affair over three years ago. Next, a series of suspicious murders involving Victor's friends and close associates disturbs the peaceful, ordered life to which he's become accustomed. Finally, as he investigates the murders further, the hidden truths that he reveals cast shadows of doubt on those he has grown to trust, and he becomes an increasingly dangerous threat - most especially to his own life.

7 Days is a fast-paced and enjoyable read. The dialogue is crisp, the action quite satisfying, and Ward does an excellent job of crafting a compelling storyline, capturing the realities of back-room deals and the many other unsavory truths of political life. With each new plot twist, she leaves you with just enough questions to keep your interest at such a high level that it often feels as though you can't turn the pages fast enough.

Moreover, 7 Days differs from many of its relatives in the suspense/thriller genre because of its true heart: by displaying the concomitant agony that Victor endures as each of the tough decisions that he has to make places further strain on his personal and professional relationships, Ward gives us the true embodiment of a hero: physically and spiritually conflicted, yet resolved to do what's right for a cause greater than his own. His determination to persevere until true justice is served wins Victor your constant admiration and respect and keeps you silently cheering for him to overcome increasingly tougher obstacles.

Look out for more great works by Sammie Ward. Her versatility in interweaving such divergent themes as political intrigue, infidelity, and ghosts from the past makes her a superb writer to watch.

A real treasure to be experienced with your children

It is a rare children's book that can touch so many senses, and span so many generations. This one is meant to be read aloud with a child on your lap. The illustrations are so charming that you can almost reach out and feel the fur of the dogs, hear them romp and chase through the city streets, and even smell and taste the steamy foam of Ms. Brady's latte. And the rhythm of the delightful poetry adds the right pace to its characters, and literally keeps the story moving. But its true magic is its heart: an intelligent and touching story. It is exactly what every adult yearns for: a means to convey life's hard truths and challenges in a way children can hear and enjoy them. This book is really an experience, that children will want you to repeat -- again and again, as children do -- but that you will also want to.

This is a great book for a first time cruiser like me. I did things a little backwards. Did my homework online, booked my cruise AND THEN bought this book. Everything the author suggested I had already done. Of course I could have save myself a lot of time if I had bought the book FIRST. I definitely would not have had to spend many hours online. Am looking forward to see if his suggestions work!

I have been consulting the Berlitz cruise guide for many years, and find it a very valuable source of information. Even if I have cruised for more than 20 times, each new edition brings some revised and/or revelant information. Any serious cruise enthusiast should have the Berlitz book for consultation. Highly recommended.
