This book was quite a discovery for me. A friend of mine was given a small library of books and told me I could have any that caught my eye. I happened to pick this one up and quickly became intrigued.

It is written by a Catholic Professor, a PhD, with a likely target audience being a graduate student Theologian or the Catholic church leader. None-the-less, it is totally relevant to the Protestant as well (that's me). McKenzie writes with no predetermined objective but to mine the pure truth from the New Testament and to point to God's best model for Church leadership. He does this beautifully without blaming or condemning failures and shortcomings but successfully illuminates the true ideal model for the New Testament Church.

In one chapter he compares the current church model to the Corporate model described in the book, "The Organization Man." Here he says, "The Church has an organization; it is not an organization. The Church is the body of Christ in which the Spirit dwells. Yet it seems worth while to consider the techniques of The Organization because these techniques are undoubtedly tempting to Church officers."

It is not a long book but it is rich with lessons but I cannot do justice here. Most church leaders benefit greatly from.

The Primer for Parents
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-20
Some of the chapters within Autism: Now What? The Primer For Parents are only two pages in length. There are some black & white photographs and stick figure drawings within the pages. The authors of this book have a 14-year old son with autism, they have been there, they get it and want to help the newly diagnosed families through the first steps when acquiring the diagnosis.

There are ten chapters, glossary and acronyms, a note about the authors and illustrator as well as a look back at their journey into autism. The preface mentions offering insight into what you can expect and hoping the readers will feel validated in their own struggles. Autism: Now What? The Primer For Parents is an easy read that is not overwhelming. It is the ideal book for therapists, support groups, workshops, teachers and extended family. Since many receive the diagnosis or mention of the word "autism" in a report by an SLP (Speech Language Professional) this would be perfect for therapists to give to parents when new to this process.

The section entitled, A Family's Journey into Autism - the authors share their experience from the diagnosis stage at three years of age, includes photos, a list of signs of autism they missed (not wanting to open gifts, difficulty nursing, a fascination with overhead lights and ceiling fans), denial, cycle of grief. This cycle includes denial, guilt, shame, isolation, panic, anger, bargaining, hope, acceptance, shock and depression.

This book covers from getting the diagnosis to therapy, coping strategies, IEP, Glossary and Advocating. This is a good book to start with and grandparents would find it useful as well.

THE ANTI-GLAMOUR ART BOOK
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-23
Combining death, sex, goth, and erotica, Autopsyrotica is the anti-glamour pin-up collection. Boldly colored, glistening bodies are replaced by dark, horrific, yet hauntingly beautiful images from artist Chad Michael Ward. Ward combines his skills at digital photography and digital painting to provide an 80 page collection that make Clive Barker's Hellish Cenobytes look tame by comparison. The images are paired with Ward's text in symphony of depravity. It's as if Ward took his models, and sent them down to the Abyss where they were transformed by demonic hands. His mastery of the digital format blends seamlessly. These are images that will stick with you long after you've put the book down. And the models seem to dare you to just try and forget them!

"Zombie" is perhaps at once the most terrifying, and yet sorrowful pieces in the book. The dark make-up around her eyes and her black hair blend into the deep, background shadows, making them seem as one. Only her left eye seems to hint at a shred of life, peering hatefully off of the page.

"Queen Hell" is appropriately named. This piece features a snarling, twisted horned, unholy queen who is the living embodiment of Hell. Then there is "The Curse", perhaps the second most chilling image in the book. Grimacing...wide-eyed...hair disheveled...this poor girl personifies madness, anger, and revenge.

Visually stunning and thoroughly unsettling, Autopsyrotica is certainly not for the squeamish. And due to its subject matter and nudity, it is definitely a book for mature audiences. But those who appreciate the female form...in all its forms, even the dark and wicked, will find it to be a unique experience to read. I also love the fact that the models names and pictures were listed in the credits in the back of the book. Nice Touch! From NBM Publishing.

This delightful book investigates the cat, its relationship with man and the development of the specialised breeds found today. It provides a practical guide to the care of one's pet while making entertaining excursions into the lives of famous cats of fact and fiction by using quotes from prose and poetry and showing cats in works of art. The book in fact opens with the poem My Cat Jeoffry by Christopher Smart and includes quotes from Chaucer and John Skelton. Cats feature in the works of famous artist like Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Dürer, Tintoretto, Ghirlandaio, Hieronymus Bosch, Brueghel and many others. In a way, the text serves also as a bibliography of works dedicated to cats, or in which they are mentioned, by people like Mark Twain, Doris Lessing, Tenessee Williams, Truman Capote and many others. There is even a chapter on Cats in the East. The character of the cat is described and compared with other animals, and its early history traced from the first appearance of the species, through the ancient Egyptian reverence for sacred cats to its association with magic and witchcraft in the middle ages. The enthusiasm and love of cats expressed by great figures in history make delightful reading. The different breeds that now exist are considered in turn and rare types like the Tibetan, Paraguyan, Kimona, Malay, Oriental, Bobtail and Korat are described. The author also provides practical advice on choosing the right cat and caring for it from kittenhood through all the phases of its life. With more than 200 pictures in black & white (including pics of Henri Matisse, Robert Graves & Ernest Hemingway with their cats) - plus over 40 more in full color - an intoxicating gallery of cats and kittens is provided. This is a classic book and a must-have for all people who are owned by or love cats.

Thanks again for the author who allows me to reveal the secrets of the Beechcraft masterpiece.

Marle Woodson's book reminds the reader that we are all human beings, with the same hopes and dreams, whether we are on the "inside" or the "outside" of the hospital walls. His story describe his stay in an Oklahoma hospital as a last resort to defeat his alcoholism. The book is not a sensationalist tale, but rather a telling record of his days spent on Ward 8. What I found compelling was his honesty as he contemplates his existence in the past, the present, and the future. His words are touching and sometimes humorous. I wish I could have met Mr. Woodson. This is a book for readers who are interested in how other people think.
