Good Politics for Today

Eureka! What a find! A dual triumph against nihilism and naivete!

Taking the time to examine the essentials of politics and public consensus, John Courtney Murray transcends the religious bigotry and secular insanities of our day, to show the inherent madness of some of our more liberal politicians, and the corresponding stupidity of some of our more conservative ones.

A remarkably balanced book (if the reader forgives the author for his occasional Latin phraseology), the fact that it was written in defense against the leering Communist threat does not detract from its relevance today. Examining the beginnings, historical context, nature, and pragmatic validity of the American Experiment as interpreted in the 20th Century, he applies the Founding Fathers' and Western civilization's traditional values to redefine progress today.

Peter Lawler's fascinating and comprehensive to Murray's thought in the context of the American Catholic natural law tradition makes this new edition of WHTT more than worth the money. Someone might quibble with the placement of Lawler's intro, and perhaps the publisher should restore the integrity of Murray's text in the next printing.

Our 2 1/2 year old received this book as a gift. Every night we read it at least twice to him. He knows what all the animals are called and what the baby animals will turn into. He calls this his "butterfly book". We absolutely love it! Very durable as well.

Welcome surprises on every page!

"What are you?" that is the question the animals are asking their baby animal friends...the answers are revealed as you open the flaps to display colorful and exciting pop-ups of full grown animals. In front of your eyes a cygnet is transformed into a swan, a joey into a kangaroo and a nymph into a dragonfly. The expressions of wonder and surprise on the animals faces are adorable. It's large size, vibrant illustrations and it's content would make an excellent addition to any home or public library!

This book serves two purposes: 1)As an invitation to the New Testament from a Christological perspective as the title of the book suggests and 2) as a summary review of the New Testament for anyone already familiar with its theology who may want to read a quick overview. There are questions at the conclusion of each New Testament book summary that are useful in helping the reader retain the material. This book can also be used to assist anyone who may be teaching a New Testament course within the church or it can be given as a gift to introduce anyone young or old to the New Testament as a whole. In short, it is a great addition to anyone's personal library of books about the Bible and its theology.

The book arrived quickly and in great shape. The shipper took great care with it. Beautiful illustrations. I've seen some of the artists earlier work through illustrations and other books. When you see their work in this book you can actually see the great progress they have made with their art. Unbelievable. The photos are great and the book a tribute to the artists'lifetime of dedication to the art of wildfowl carving. I am keeping it on my coffee table and am very proud of the book, which seems like a piece of art itself.

Each April, the best wildfowl carvers in the world present their most ambitious works at the Ward World Championship in Ocean City, Maryland. This book is photographer Ernie Sparks' loving tribute to the artistry of these carvers.

The carvings are far from their humble predecessors of carved wood decoys - these birds soar, crouch with prey, and skim the surface of the water they are hunting. Besides artistry and accuracy, these works are judged on "essence of species", and each sculpture is composed to suggest habitat and behavior.

The more than 100 large color photographs are accompanied by Laurel Aziz's text, which provides information about the competition, the artists, and how the work is accomplished. The book also has a species index and a list of World-Class Champions.

From cover to cover, this book will fascinate bird lovers, naturalists, artists, and art collectors alike.

As a teacher, I have reviewed many vocabulary texts and have never found one as effective as Word Wealth Junior. Students who have used this text have consistently scored much higher on standardized tests than those who used the typical vocabulary workbook.

When I was in junior high (over 20 yrs ago) my school used this book to build vocabulary. I still remembered the title and was attempting to buy it for my college-bound niece. It helped me score in the 99th percentile for verbal on every standardized exam I ever took. Do a chapter a week and your vocabulary is guaranteed to improve!

Bringing Spirituality to the Workplace
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-19
Pat Sullivan has studied spirituality and its entwinement with daily life for more than 30 years and she has crammed many lessons in this important little book. She believes that an attitude of humility, commitment, integrity and spirit or prayerfulness can foster feelings of satisfaction and joy in the workplace...and one does not have to make a big show of spirituality in order to accomplish that feeling. All religions and creeds can bring their own sense of spirit to work; spirituality and work are not separate: "All work is ministry in some way, if only as a place to try to model appropriate principles and values." Even so, she does not sidestep such issues as right livelihood, mistakes, failures, burnout and unethical behavior. She offers tips for recovery from stress and the ways to handle personal problems that we bring with us to work. The workplace is a community, says Sullivan, where one person's attitude can have a profound affect. It is a place where we express our love through creativity. One of the great stengths of this little tome is its list of resources and notes at the end. It is a must read for anyone who wishes to transform their working life, whether that means changing careers of just changing attitudes.

a marvelous achievement!

I read this book for a course I am taking in Atlantic Civilizations. Stavig goes in depth in creating a picture of the life of the desendents of the Inca's in Peru. Even though many sources are from the Spanish colonial records, there are ample references to native sources. It was eye-opening information about a culture that has my fullest admiration. Only towards the end that all the background history is linked and tied to Tupac Amaru. Study the glossary at the end of the book first to help you understand the text, since Stavig prefers to use the original term instead of the translation. Excellent reading!

Wonderful for Tiger lovers
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-02
This is a wonderful book for anyone who loves tigers. It is packed with spectacular photos of tigers, most in their natural environment. There are also some pictures of other wildlife & of native peoples.

There are pictures of tigers with their cubs, ready to pounce & many close-ups. Sadly, there are others of tigers in captivity. I loved the pictures of the white tigers especially a rare one with orange stripes instead of black.

If you can tear yourself away from the pictures the text is equally impressive. The author tells of his adventures in national parks throughout Asia.

He also discusses the plight of tigers & other animals of the area being killed for there furs or horns and what is being done to protect them. There is a list of conservationists in the back if you want to help.
