But I do hate it when it takes more that five years out of a characters life before they resolve their problems or misunderstandings. I want them marrying and having children.

William Canfield was presented as a bull-headed, domineering person.
But he had made a sucess of his Canfield business. Now it appears that Peter has run too many risks and lost the stockholders investments.

Peter turns out to be an arrogant, selfish b-----d who thinks he can do as he pleases.

Thomas Canfield, 34 has carried a torch [or should I say an unresolved desire] for Sophie Beaumont for the past ten years. He still does not understand why she left and refused to answer his calls. By now he is in the military Coast Guard flying a rescue helicopter.
Now that his brother, Peter and Shelly, Sophie's twin sister, have been killed he must assume the care of his father and Peter's 3 children, Alison at 10 years and the twins Zach and Zoe who are five years old.

Sophie, almost 30, is determined to also take care of and be there for Shelly's children. She will not run out on them. Thomas is fearful that she will leave and devastate the children.

It is wonderful the way the story unwinds with two people grappling with their emotions for each other and trying to lessen the suffering of the children. Thomas is having a hard time trying to understand the mess that the Canfield organization has fallen into. What was Peter thinking of?

Thomas wants to ensure that Sophie does not leave the children and especially not leave him again. He decides that marriage is the only answer. [Finally!]
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED --m as are most of her books - thoroughly enjoyable read.03732730965552003-11-14a super mystery and romance!Ten years ago Sophie Beaumont had been visiting her twin sister after the birth of her first child. While there, she meets and falls for Thomas the older brother of the man who married her sister, Peter Canfield. After, Sophie and Thomas share a night of love on the beach, she is nearly raped by her brother-in-law and forcibly kicked out of the house by his father William, because William is less than happy with Shelly marrying his favourite son, he is not going to let another "white-trash" Beaumont ruin another Son's life. So Sophie ran from Thomas.
But now, everything has changed. Thomas' call in the middle of the night summons Sophie back to Seal Point the mansion of the Canfields. Peter and Shelly were killed in an car accident, leaving their three children in their care. William is not harder to care for because he has Alzheimer's, it's up to Thomas and Sophie to care for the family.
No sooner are they were than William claims Peter is coming to the house. No one believe him because he is often very confused and thinks Thomas is Peter and Sophie is Shelly, complicated in his mind because Sophie and Shelly were twins.
Thomas and Sophie's attraction flairs again, but she is still hiding why she ran from him. Thomas fears she will run again, so to insure she is there for the children, he pushes her to marry him in order to form a solid foundation for the children.
With the FBI running around investigating Shelly's and Peter's death, as well as the death of another Canfield employee...they are facing a pile of troubles.
Thayne's writing is solid, so this is one super read. So I will be checking out her other books, and have her down on my preorder list.524200General13354Contemporary23Romance1000Subjects283155Books713672011General AAS13354Contemporary23Romance1000Subjects283155Books13426Silhouette Intimate Moments13391Series23Romance1000Subjects283155Books13361General23Romance1000Subjects283155Books713660011General AAS23Romance1000Subjects283155Books394184011Mass Market400272011Paperback394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books1564591336http://www.amazon.com/Freemasonry-Ancient-Gods-J-Ward/dp/1564591336%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D15645913361132941http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/415AKZCR7SL._SL75_.jpg7556http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/415AKZCR7SL._SL160_.jpg160120http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/415AKZCR7SL.jpg500375J. The novel, originally published in 1826, three years after the mistress of the Gothic's death, was actually written by her in 1803, but then suppressed by her from publication. The general belief is that she disowned the novel, thinking it inferior to her other work; literary historians have also claimed that readers agreed and greeted its publication with little enthusiasm. The primary reason usually given for why it is inferior is that it is the only one of Radcliffe's Gothic novels where she chose to use a real ghost rather than explain what appeared to be supernatural occurrences. The general reader, and especially the student of Gothic and historical fiction, should be allowed to judge the matter for himself and now that Valancourt Books has republished Gaston de Blondeville, that decision can be made.

Gaston de Blondeville, while admittedly not as full of chills and suspense as The Mysteries of Udolpho or The Italian, is a remarkable novel in Radcliffe's canon. It marks a noted departure from her earlier novels, and in many ways, it displays her growth and restraint as an author. Considering all her previous novels were published between the time she was twenty-five and thirty-three, a remarkably young age for someone to write three of the greatest Gothic novels of all time, as well as a couple inferior ones, it is not surprising that Radcliffe sought to move in a new direction in her work. Gaston de Blondeville was the beginning of her growth in that new direction, and had she written another like it, readers may have had a real treat in an even greater Radcliffe.

My only criticism of Valancourt Books' edition of Gaston de Blondeville--which is filled with a superb collection of secondary sources and an impressive scholarly introduction by Frances Chiu to reflect the historical and political influences of the French Revolution upon the novel--is that no attempt is made in these supplementary materials to explain why Radcliffe made this departure from her past use of rational explanations for supposed supernatural occurrences. I believe that departure is the big question that must be answered about this novel, especially since Radcliffe was otherwise striving to be more realistic from a historical standpoint.

Despite what is typically said about Gaston de Blondeville by literary historians, the six contemporary reviews provided in this edition are largely favorable. In her introduction, Frances Chiu quotes these reviews to argue that literary critics condemned the novel, but in truth, only one review is solidly negative while the rest express great enthusiasm for a new work by Mrs. Radcliffe. Chiu quotes La Belle Assemblee as saying "it is without the lofty pretensions of some of Mrs. Radcliffe's earlier productions, and incapable of exciting an equal intenseness of interest" but Chiu fails to quote what comes directly after: "it will not in the slightest degree detract from the fame of her" and "it will be read with great satisfaction by every reader of taste." Scots Magazine was pleased that the novel does not include so much of her poetry which is not remarkable at all, and overall feels the novel is an improvement on her earlier work because "She avoided long particulars of rural scenery, and tedious trackings of the agitated mind, from one terrible or sorrowful imagination to another." In fact, the only review that is truly negative is the Monthly Review, which does find parts of the work to praise but chiefly objects to its use of the supernatural.

Why Radcliffe decided to include supernatural events as a reality has not been given a good explanation. Perhaps she felt the supernatural was more acceptable to the reading public by the earlier nineteenth century, nearly fifteen years after she wrote her first Gothic novel. While she may have been in competition with other Gothic writers, her contemporaries, such as Matthew Lewis in The Monk (1795) and William Godwin in St. Leon (1799), were not beyond using the supernatural as a possibility, so perhaps she need no longer provide rational explanations for supernatural events. Greater study is needed of how the view toward the supernatural changed and became acceptable in literature, especially during this period as the "Age of Reason" was replaced by the horrors of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars.

What I find more remarkable about Gaston de Blondeville than Radcliffe's use of the supernatural is that it is one of the earliest historical fiction novels. Sir Walter Scott is often credited with being the first major writer of historical fiction, but historical fiction certainly has its roots in Gothic novels with their typically medieval settings. The difference between Gothic and historical fiction is the concentration on a much more realistic historical world. The Gothic typically sets its novels in a more vaguely historical period or avoids attention to historic detail. A key component to historical fiction is the depiction of historical events and historical personages in the background of the novel, such as the Battle of Culloden as the background to Scott's Waverley (1814). If that is true, then I would argue that Radcliffe is our first true female historical novelist since Gaston de Blondeville, although not published until 1826, was written in 1803, a full six years before Jane Porter's The Scottish Chiefs (1809), that tremendous novel about Sir William Wallace, and only three years after Godwin's St. Leon (1799) which only really attains historical fiction status due to its including the historical character of Bethlem Gabor in its pages. (Arguments have been made that Clara Reeve is the first female writer of historical fiction, but I don't feel her work is historically detailed enough to merit such a claim). Radcliffe is far more historically detailed than Godwin in her descriptions of the court of Henry III and in the details she provides of that age of chivalry, tournaments, and medieval monasteries. While her novel may not have had the influence on historical fiction that Scott's works did, and therefore, she may not be the mother of historical fiction, not having led to the birth of similar historical works, as she was for Gothic novels, she certainly is the aunt, who has been kept like a skeleton in the closet, while Gaston de Blondeville has been treated as if it were better not to be talked about it, lest it ruin the Mistress of Gothic Literature's good name.

I encourage all lovers of Gothic and historical fiction to read Gaston de Blondeville to make up their own minds. I personally find the novel a much more concise, controlled and mature work, and if not as fascinating and suspenseful as her previous works, one that deserves further attention. If Mrs. Radcliffe had written and published a couple more historical novels after Gaston de Blondeville, I have no doubt she would have rivaled Sir Walter Scott for his dominant place as a writer of historical fiction. As always, I commend Valancourt Books for preserving our literary heritage by printing such important and overlooked works of literature.

Festivities abound, wine flows copiously, and spirits are high as the King and his subjects prepare to celebrate the nuptials of Sir Gaston de Blondeville. But the joyous mood is interrupted when a merchant, Hugh Woodreeve, comes distraught before the King to demand justice. His kinsman, he claims, was murdered, by the very man the King has come to honour -- Gaston de Blondeville!

If Catholics were reading this book, there would probably be many trying to undermine it, as there are the excellent book by another Roman Catholic scholar, John Cornwell.
Cornwell's book may be making a bigger splash because of his controversial title, "Hitler's Pope, the secret history of Pius XII". Both authors are obviously pained, as Catholics themselves, by the facts which they uncovered, and are not happy to be exposing the shameful record of their church regarding the Holocaust. But loyalty to God does not allow them to hide or misrepresent the truth about their church. Dominique Barthelmy discusses God's up and down relationship with His "image," ie, His covenant people. It seems that the more the people turned from God, the more that God tried to reach out to them through prophetic figures.

The book is a good reminder of how mankind has always tended to go its own way rather than God's way. It also reminds us that God has not given up on us and that He still desires to bring His people back to Him. A good read!B0007DLG2Q5882007-11-25Great overview of Biblical Theologydon't remember when I had read about the book God and His Image: An Outline of Biblical Theology by Dominique Barthelemy, but I am glad I added it to my Wish List and got around to ordering it. Fr. Dominique Barthelemy O.P. was an internationally recognized expert on Old Testament studies and a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission who died in 2002.

The book is exactly as it advertises an overview of Bibical Theology and thus salvation history. Fr. Barthelemy asks very interesting questions throughout and then writes to answer them as to what can be known from the scriptural evidence. What I like is that he doesn't overstep what can be known just to advance some theory. He also has the ability to write deeply on scripture while at the same time not becoming too technical and overwhelming the reader. I certainly don't claim to be any kind of expert, but I found at no time in the book did I get lost in the points he was making.

I think just the chapter he wrote "The idols and His Image" to be worth the price of the book by itself. When he writes that when man tries to build bridges to God he creates idols and when God builds a bridge to man it was the Incarnation. His insights make you look at what you might already know and to see it fresh and more deeply. Viewing Biblical theology in this outline view helps you to see the big picture of salvation history that is mainly concentrated within the Old Testament but sees its fulfillment in new Testament.
I do hope that more of his work is translated into English if this book is any indication and since this book was published by Ignatius Press I hope they bring more of his work to us if possible.Fr. Dominique Barthelemy was an internationally recognized expert on Old Testament studies and a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission. In this highly acclaimed work he dispenses with the technical language of exegesis and linguistics and speaks more simply and directly--as a priest, a teacher, a believer --about the heart of the Biblical message. This work is a beautiful and inspiring introduction to the spiritual teaching of the Old Testament, a book that will greatly help believers to hear the renewing and rejuvenating Word of God with deepened understanding and appreciation.
This is a book about the close relationship between God and man. It is about the long history of God's love for man and the struggles that man has had in remaining faithful to God and keeping intact the divine image in which he was created. Barthelemy's purpose here is to present what God says about himself and about those made in his image (man) in the inspired texts of Scripture. Fr. Barthelemy helps us see the profound unity between the Old and New Testaments, and he shows how the Old Testament is a necessary and valuable light for men of faith today.
This powerful work by an acclaimed Biblical and spiritual writer will enkindle the heart and enlighten the mind of modern man to see who God really is and who we truly are in God's eyes, helping us to understand the full extent of our deep need for God and knowledge of our ultimate purpose in life.1586171682Lovely, Like Jerusalem: The Fulfillment of the Old Testament in Christ and the Church1586171976The Order of Things1592764053The Apostles1586171844The God of Jesus Christ: Meditations on the Triune God1586172204Jesus, the Apostles and the Early Church12174General172810Reference12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books15755411General12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books1580511058http://www.amazon.com/God-Second-Chances-Stories-Transformed/dp/1580511058%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D15805110581195164http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5158RPKY8TL._SL75_.jpg7555http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5158RPKY8TL._SL160_.jpg160117http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/5158RPKY8TL.jpg500366Marcia Z. Each story is a tale of grace -- and some of grit -- in the lives of real people. Often spiritual tales are too sugar-coated to be of much encouragement to those who struggle honestly with real life. This book beautifully integrates honesty with hope, no matter what your path has been, it's encouraging to know that God is a God of second chances. Marcia Nelson's writing style and personal postcards from her journey add to the beauty of this book. 15805110585342001-11-17A Book About Everyday People Who Say "Yes" At the Right TimeThe stories are not written in a dramatic style; they are about real people living their lives; stumbling along while allowing Spirit to have a small influence with magnificent results.
Expecting more intense miracles, I was at first underwhelmed by the book. However, noticing that the stories lingered with me for the next week, I realized Marcia Z.Nelson is a master at reporting the facts, just the facts, leaving the rest to the reader. It works.
I use this book as a mediation book in the morning. It helps me get outside of "self" and perhaps even allows me to become a little more willing to have God in my daily decisions. A good read, this one.Marcia Nelson reveals the U-turns and turning points on the path toward peace, freedom, and happiness. She helps us recognize GodOs saving grace by offering intimate glimpses into the lives of people whose faith has transformed their outlook and circumstances. Having traveled around the country to gather these stories, Nelson introduces us to women and men who have fought drug and alcohol addiction, traded crime for caring, converted loss and illness into compassion, and turned despair into joy. In meeting these people, and in sharing in NelsonOs own journey of faith, we encounter what is best about us and also most human: the ability to make mistakes, make amends, and make good. Along the way, we encounter the God who never gives up on us.12339Faith12333Christian Living12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12341General12333Christian Living12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books713629011General AAS12333Christian Living12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books69982Devotionals12465Worship & Devotion12290Christianity22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12783Comparative Religion12779Religious Studies22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books69980Devotionals12809Spirituality22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12817Inspirational12809Spirituality22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12504General22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books713609011General AAS22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books0854682260http://www.amazon.com/GOLDEN-SCORPION-author-Fu-Manchu/dp/0854682260%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0854682260Sax (pen name used by Arthur Sarsfield Ward) RohmerHardcover9780854682263Import0854682260EnglishEnglishTom Stacey250Book1972Tom StaceyTom StaceyTHE GOLDEN SCORPION (by the author of Fu Manchu)174801USD$8.012799USD$27.990510005.02108546822605562002-08-25Classic RohmerI have always enjoyed Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu books - I have them all - but I had never read his other books before. The old-fashioned style in The Golden Scorpion can be a bit offputting until you get used to it, and the racial stereotyping is certainly jarring to modern sensibilities (and would probably be offensive for some). But if you view it as a product of the time and accept that such views were typical then, it is a very exciting story. No one writes like this anymore -- exciting, with clear-cut good and evil, fast-paced, with characters who are larger than life. Good stuff!0854682260520211997-07-27Classic "Yellow Peril""... a needle-like ray of blue light shot across the lawn from beyond the hedge and-- but for that nervous start-- must have struck fully upon the back of Stuart's skull. Instead, it shone past his head, which it missed only by inches, and he experienced a sensation as though some one had buffeted him upon the cheek furiously. He pitched out of his chair and on to the carpet. The first object which the ray touched was the telephone; and next, beyond it, a medical dictionary; beyond that again, the grate, in which a fire was laid...
An intense crackling sound deafened him, and the air of the room seemed to have become hot as that of an oven. There came a series of dull reports-- an uncanny wailing... and the needle-ray vanished. A monstrous shadow, moon-cast,, which had lain across the carpet of the lawn-- the shadow of a
cowled man-- vanished also.
...There was smoke in the room, a smell of burning and of fused metal. He glared at the table madly. The mouthpiece of the telephone had vanished!"
A pretty impressive weapon and near assassination! Especially since the scene was first published in 1920 in Sax Rohmer's thriller, The Golden Scorpion.
Sadly, book store shelves today (even the shelves of rare and used book stores) are nearly devoid of works by Sax Rohmer (given name: Arthur S. Ward). The few titles by Rohmer which come and go in and out of print are those having to do with his
most famous character-- the insidious Doctor Fu Manchu (portrayed variously in films by Boris Karloff in the 1930's and Christopher Lee in the 1960's) and his nemesis, the London detective, Nayland Smith, bearing a striking resemblance to
Conan Doyle's famous Sherlock Holmes. Much is the pity that more of Rohmer's work isn't readily available to readers today. For the literary worlds of Sax Rohmer are filled with intrigue,
fast-paced action and suspense, and, alas, a good deal of what would be termed political incorrectness today. For many of Rohmer's greatest villains, like Dr. Fu Manchu, are Chinese
masterminds, ready to claim possession of the world during a time when Europeans and Americans, alike, worried about the rising influence of China and the "Yellow Peril."
In The Golden Scorpion Europe's top scientists are suddenly falling dead of no apparent cause and French detective Gaston Max, master of disguise, languages, and intellect (surely a close cousin to Mr. Holmes as well as Poe's A. Dupin) believes the
deaths are actually murder-- murder which he traces to "The Scorpion" a Chinese genius whose identity has always remained concealed behind a cloud of fear. Dr. Keppel Stuart becomes a
target of "The Scorpion" due to his knowledge of exotic poisons and falls under the charm of the beautiful Asian woman variously known as Mlle. Dorian, Zara el-Khala, and Miska, whose "smile
was the taunting smile of the East, which is at once a caress and an invitation."
But as Gaston Max closes in, we learn that Miska's is a dreadful life-- for she is an unwilling agent of "The Scorpion" who, Miska confesses, "is the most dangerous being in the known world. He has invented horrible things-- poisons and instruments, which I cannot describe because I have never seen them; but I have seen... some of their effects." Nor has she seen "The Feast of a
Thousand Ants," another one of The Scorpion's playful devices which "is performed with the aid of African driver ants, a pair of surgical scissors and a pot honey" which can strip the flesh off of a living man in sixty-nine minutes!
And who is "The Scorpion ?
"The new-comer wore a cowled garment of some dark blue material which enveloped him from head to feet. It possessed oval eye-holes, and through
these apertures gleamed two eyes which looked scarcely like the eyes of a human being. They were of that brilliant yellow colour sometimes seen in the eyes of tigers, and their most marked and awful peculiarity was their unblinking regard. They seemed always to be open to their fullest extent, and Stuart realized with anger that it was impossible to sustain for long the
piercing unmoved gaze... for he knew he was in the presence of `The Scorpion'
The Golden Scorpion stands among Rohmer's finest suspense tales outside of the Fu Manchu series. The story drives frantically to the awesome climax and will transport readers back in time to
a simpler era where the greatest threat to the world is a mad Chinese mastermind whose weapons are death rays and poisons, whose eyes have the power to mesmerize (like Chandu the Magician-- a famous pulp-fiction character and later a movie
serial which Rohmer gives a tip of the hat to in The Golden Scorpion), and who, like many a mortal, is flawed when it comes to beauty and love. Those were the days.605116General18Mystery & Thrillers1000Subjects283155Books713437011General AAS18Mystery & Thrillers1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books078730932Xhttp://www.amazon.com/Gone-Three-Narratives-After-Death-Experiences/dp/078730932X%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D078730932X5425516J.

Included here are narratives of three people who after passing away find themselves existing in other realities, yet most of them don't even know they are dead, much less (in some cases) in hell.

The author, a psychic, through automatic writing and conscious astral projection is able to ge in contact with them.

The second story is very unusual. A man named the "officer" who was a scoundrel finds himself after death in a very displeasing situation. Yet knowing he is dead he keeps on getting worse to the point of falling into a black lake of spongy darkness and total silence, a terrible situation, which he thinks is the lowest point in hell.

It is here for the first time that the officer decides his only way out is to yield to a power higher than himself. He then remembers that as a child he learned, through his mother, the Lord's Prayer and for the first time in his adult life decided to put it to good use.

Then very slowly he began to move up until he reaches the surface of the dreadful lake. From there he had to climb some high cliffs in order to get to the next level. His misadventures, and hardships, with the help of his higher self, continue through 6 levels of hell, each one a little less shocking than the one behind, until at last he is able to escape through his admission into the astral plane.

Evil was never real, and endless, continuous progression is the law of the universe.

078730932X5441998-12-31A magnificent look into the after-life.J.S.M.Ward wrote this book around the turn of the century. It delves into the after-life more completely than any other book I have ever read. After his father-in-law dies, he has contact with him through trance states and automatic writings. He is taken to all the areas from the depths of hell to heaven. The things he saw were later confirmed by an independent medium. Although the medium did not see them nearly as clearly as Mr. Ward. It is a fascinating look into an area that most people fear or do not understand. A must read for anyone interested in the subject.Part I: The Lowest Division of the Spirit Plane; Part 2: The Officer; Part 3: The Astral Plane.12667General12621New Age22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books713653011General AAS12621New Age22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12716Parapsychology12689Occult22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books0962868361http://www.amazon.com/Gone-Fat-Jen-Bays-Avis/dp/0962868361%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0962868361647396http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21RXE8H9KKL._SL75_.jpg7556http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21RXE8H9KKL._SL160_.jpg140104http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21RXE8H9KKL.jpg140104Jen Bays AvisKathy F.
