This style was as radical for its time as Bruce Lee's effort later. Da Cheng Chuan (Great Achievement Boxing) is an earlier
name for what is mostly called Yi Quan (Intent Boxing) now, a derivative of Xing Yi Kung Fu. This was a radical departure
and an attempt at modernization during a rough time in Chinese history. Da Cheng abandons many classical Kung Fu practices
such as forms. However it deepens the involvement in other traditional methods such as "standing practice" where the practitioner
takes various postures to develop power. Fighting and healing skills are developed. A truly interesting system with detractors
and proponents.

Excellent introduction to the political- historical Dante

This is an excellent introduction to the political and historical Dante. It focuses on the thought of Dante and presents his
development from the early poetry and the 'Vita Nuova ' through the climax in 'The Divine Comedy'. It places the work in the
context of its time , and gives much detail on the Florentine world . Dante's story with Beatrice his ideal love and inspiration
is traced from its courtly love foundation through its religious and spiritual transformation. Holmes sees the Divine Comedy
as the most powerfully sustained poetic work in world literature in the past millenium. He does not focus on a close reading
of the poetry, but does provide a guide to the major personalities and themes of ' The Comedy'.
This small work gives a true sense of the overall mission and meaning of Dante's work.

Exellent presentation of the views of Darwin

This book opens with a summary of the life of Darwin born in 1809 who published ' Origin of the Species' in 1859, only upon
learning that another researcher Wallace was about to publish the identical finding .i.e. that natural selection was the mechanism
of Evolution of Species. Howard writes sympathetically of Darwin the man and researcher. Aside from the five years on the
Beagle expedition Darwin spent all his life in London and in his country home a few miles outside it. Blessed with a long
and happy marriage, timid by nature and physically ill for most of his life Darwin used the family wealth ( his mother was
from the Wedgewood pottery family) to have time for his researches. Devoted to his family ( He deeply grieved the loss of
three of his children) he worked at home putting together the findings that would revolutionize Mankind's way of thinking
not only about the development of the natural world, but of Mankind itself.
Howard shows the sources of natural selection in Darwin's close understanding of the Earth's development through his reading and friendship with the great geologist Lyle, in his adoption of a Malthusian idea of struggle for survival, and in his precise observations of living species and the fossil record. Howard also shows how the idea of evolution through natural selection was championed and brought forward by T.H. Huxley.
There are chapters also on ' The evidence for natural selection,' on 'Sex , variation and heredity,' on ' Man' on 'Perfection and Progress' on 'Darwinism and ideology' and on 'Darwin as a scientist: an evaluation'.
Howard attempts in the course of the exposition to refute those who have denied the validity of 'natural selection' and of the ' evolution of species'. His arguments are complicated and not always easy to follow , but seem soundly argued.
I believe that this is an excellent introductory work to understanding the main ideas and thrust of Darwin's thought.
I would only add a personal note. I am one of those people for whom the findings of Darwin present a deep emotional and religious challenge. The Biblical idea of special creation is at the heart of my own religious belief and conception of human dignity. Along with this there is the basic human need and from my own religion, Judaism's point- of- view religious requirement to seek and know the truth. What happens when the truth scientifically revealed contradicts a basic element in one's own religious belief?
I know no easy or satisfactory answer to this question.

I have just completed reading Death of a Red Mandarin. When I first discovered the series, I snatched up all three--all equally
good by the way--since I often enjoy mysteries set in "foreign" places, and I visited China in the late '80s. West reflects
the China I sensed was seething under the surface displayed for the tourist trade. He draws his characters with care and
they are believable and understandable. It is easy to care about them all, even though you may not like them, which is to
me essential for enjoyment. The mix of old and new Chinese attitude he weaves with Wang and Rosina is engaging. Highly
recommended reading. I am eager for the fourth and more in the series to be published.

This is the detailed story about how China during the Deng Xiaoping era was transformed from a socialist or quasi-socialist
dictatorship to a capitalist dictatorship, but without giving up the socialist slogans. In the words of the author (pp. 492-3):
"China today is experiencing, on a massive scale and in extreme forms, all the social evils of Western capitalism that modern
Chinese intellectuals and political leaders sought for over a century to avoid. [...] That century-long quest now appears
to have been all but abandoned. In the 1980s, China's leaders gradually reconciled themselves to enduring the vicissitudes
of a capitalist regime-that "social anarchy which turns every economic progress into a social calamity," as Marx so acutely
and forebodingly described the workings of capitalism." In my view, the book is very well written and well argued. Above all,
it is free from the irritating Western bias that mar many books on China. Thus, the author more than once takes pains to explode
myths about modern China, e.g. the popular impression that the Mao era was a period of economic stagnation (p. 188). But Meisner's
story is in no sense the story about China's transformation from a socialist paradise to a capitalist hell. On the contrary,
the book seems to me to be very balanced and credible. Recommended!

Dialogues On Cultural Studies: Interviews With Contemporary Critics is an essential dialogue which poses a set of questions
to a panel of North America' leading cultural critics, resulting in interviews which survey a range of modern issues, from
gender and political conflicts to sources of modernity and globalization issues. Virtually anything having to do with modern
cultural issues and studies is debated by scholars who know their stuff. Highly recommended for a college-level readership.

An Analysis of a New Reality

A law professor's critical analysis of our society's discrimination by default
Lu-in Wang contends that the largest share of modern discrimination (in medical care, in certain professions, in media attention to crimes, etc.) is by default and not by design (or ill will). As one example among many (this one having to do with sexism), the author notes that until symphony orchestras began holding `blind' auditions with musicians performing behind a screen or curtain, male musicians tended to be hired exclusively; now, of course, the gender balance has evened out. Psychologically, it was an unconscious expectation on the part of those judging that the male musicians sounded better than the female. Professor Wang gives many illustrations of this phenomenon by which expectations influence the outcome and often become `reality'-the self-fulfilling prophecy.
In this fine book published by New York University Press, the author suggests ways by which society can override the default processes that promote discrimination, particularly, and most critically, in the legal system and in medical care.
