The power this book had over me is indescribable!!

Centers of the self is a compilation of most of my favorite black american women authors, such as Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker, Dorothy West, Jamaica Kincaid, and numerous others who I never heard of until I read this book. The stories are short but made an indelible impression on me. It is truly an unforgetable anthology, which people have been sleeping on. Do yourself a favor and get it. You'll be more than glad that you did!!!!

Classic Source Material

First of all, this book is TRANSLATED by WTS Chan, it is, of course, a collection of the writings of the neo-confucian Wang Yang-Ming (1489-1529). I'm not a Chinese philosophy specialist, I am a zen Buddhist and martial artist. I found the book to be generally intelligible, despite my lack of experience with Confucianism. A scholar of Japanese martial arts suggested that I read it as the most important foundation book for Budo or Samurai philosophy, and it is clear once you read the book. In fact, a fusing of Zen and Confucianism might not be a bad philosophy for any age.-Nick

The best book on Chekhov as a playwright
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-18
The title is no lie. The book discusses Chekhov's dramatic structure and plays of indirect action, a form he created and mastered. Chekhov spent the seven years between Ivanov, his last direct action play, and the Seagull his first indirect action play building the form. Magarshack shows how he adapted basic greek structure to create a new type of drama. The book is a must for any playwright.

The poetry in this book is delightful. Wonderful poetry for children and adults alike. Poetry about the seasons, months (Zodiac's), Christmas, Easter, Kings and even Saints and a poem for every letter of the alphabet. The only thing is, I think these poems are best read to children by an adult. Not that that is bad, but some of the words and rhyming sound better when being read by an experienced reader.

This collection presents 5 essays by Professor Hu Shih, with two commentaries by Wang Ching-Wei, and 12 essays, entitled "Little Critiques," by Dr. Lin Yu-Tang, written between 1929 and 1931 calling both for govermental reform and also to counter to the glowing praise for Chinese society that many prominent Western visitors were espousing. The Nanking government condemned these writings in harsh tones, calling for punishment for the two scholars.

A fine, short book.
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-16
If you are contemplating the construction of a Chinese garden, or are just interested in their history or development, this is an excellent, concise introduction to the topic. It presents the history, philosophy, and guidlines for construction in a clear way. It condenses a large number of references down to a readable form. The bibliography of related works in Chinese and English is worth the price of the book.
