Rhyme of a young village boy who makes a somewhat heroic effort to retrieve a big cowbell from the Alm (in snow) to carry in the cowbell parade-festival (Glockenumzugsfest). The festival symbolizes driving away winter. This entertaining little story, with beautiful art work characteristic of Unterengadin, may give the reader a sense of how farm kids in the Alps could be made to feel inadequate by their colleagues, how the fear of being last or lowest could drive them to succeed.

Another kids' book about alpine life is "Lieber Alex" by Helen Güdel, which also exists in English translation.

This review is based on the German translation from the original Räto-Romanisch spoken in Engadin ("The Inn Valley"), where the Inn River begins in southeastern Switzerland before flowing eastward through Austria.

BEYOND THE SCREEN is an apt title; it describes this book both literally and metaphorically. Nancy Berliner and fourcontributing writers dissect both the life and furniture of sixtheen and seventeenth China in a work that combines art, craft and social history. My husband, an amateur woodworker, was fascinated with descriptions of workmanship and digrams of joinery. I preferred the sections that talked about the people -- both the craftsmen (usually anonymous) that made the furniture and the elite who commissioned it. But the focus point of the book is undoubtedly the photographs of the furniture itself -- some pieces which are classically simple, others that are intricately carved. Berliner comments at length on each piece. For collectors of antique Chinese furniture -- or reproductions -- this book is an absolute must-have. It gives the story behind the craft and makes sitting down so much more interesting!

This one-act play is full of twists and turns, interesting characters, it kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering what was going to happen next. I love her awesome command of language, the witty banter, the refreshing sense of humor, the compelling suspense. Like her full-length plays GOOD MOURNING, AMERICA and JUNK BONDS, published by Original Works, Ms. Wang proves she is an original, powerful voice worthy of our attention. Five stars.

The Most Practical Text in the Field
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-08
This is probably the most practical text in the field of Biomedical Optics I have ever seen. The first one with practice problems so that a student can test themselves on their knowledge. It is also more coherent and easier to follow than the several texts in this field where each chapter is written by a different author and leaps from topic to topic in a rather fragmentary manner. I'd highly recommend this to professors as a standard textbook for a class.

This book is pure perfection, period. It is quite easy to understand for the novice analytical chemist. Dr. Wang simplifies very technical, difficult information -- into something easily comprehended by a person of average intelligence. I look forward to his next publication.

Anything you want to know about birds
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.

If you're interested in a subject, there are times that particular concepts or words come up that you simply don't understand. What is "fossorial"? What is "scansorial"? How do baby birds get out of their shells? What is migration all about?

While the internet is a great resource, it doesn't always have what you're looking for, and the information can be quite wrong depending on the source. That's where an encyclopedia like this comes in handy.

Yes, it's pretty hefty at over 900 pages. It's a solid tome for your bookshelf. But there are times that it comes in SO handy while reading your latest birding magazine, or when someone asks you a question you simply don't know the answer to.

If you can track this down, it's well worth having!

excellent and very readable description of America's economic dependence on other nations

I'm very surprised to find that this excellent book hasn't yet been reviewed. Rauchway writes in a very direct and readable style, presenting a wide array of data without numbing the reader's mind. He takes one through the development of the sense of "American exceptionalism" by showing how, all along, the US has been utterly dependent on foreign capital and the steady influx of foreign labor to develop the abundant resources lying at hand across the continent.

A very helpful contribution to debates about immigration, global economics, and America's role on the world stage.

Fantastic book: Unique Opportunity
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-20
This book reflects the unique opportunity to notice what happens before and after tribes were "civilized". It is an interesting read because it involves day-to-day experience of Eskimo life. And despite its antiquity, it contains CUTTING EDGE INFORMATION to this today: the author is finding out that Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki of south Africa had some truth in his belief that the greater socio-economic situation of a culture has a great affect on it's experience of disease. The give-away answer!?: mostly food & how it is prepared. Even if you don't get it on amazon, do an interlibrary loan and get this book as it can help guide you away from the -theoretically sound but ineffective in application- diets of the current date--low fat, highly processed food-stuffs AND start moving towards truly health-giving nutrition!

This is an excellent collection of articles from leading researchers in the cell mechanics field summarizing the current techniques to probe and sense forces on the cellular level. I highly recommend it to anyone in the cell mechanics field or for those who want to learn more about it.
