A must for the self-employed...... Teaches the ancient tactics that you don't ever want used on you in business but..... they are everyday.

Excellent supplement to the study of the art of war

The principles of conflict apply to all forms of competition: business, war, and games. Readers from all fields will find tremendous insight into the art of deception and surprise which leads to decisive results in a competitive situation. For readers of the Art of War by Sun Tzu, this is a beneficial supplement.

Several books on strategy exist and are full of theory but lack in terms of case examples of the strategies in application. The Thirty-Six Stratems takes 36 individual tactics, gives the high-level description of each, then provides an example of the application in historical China. The first 18 strategems are designed for situations where one has the advantage, the other 18 for when one is at a disadvantage. Interestingly, the strategems span from tactical situations to examples of political manipulation that can be used to one's advantage.

The one problem with this book is its availability. It took me a while to find; mine is an AsiaPac production in comic book form. Nonetheless the content is there and it has added tremendous value to the competitive spheres in my life.

The stories in this book let readers understand more about China, especially the horrible experiences that the Chinese had suffered during the Cultural Revolution. It's wonderful to see Chinese-American writers publishing books in English in the United States.

A small introduction
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-04
This work is divided into three parts. In the first and most accessible chapter Kenny talks about Aquinas life and influence. In the second chapter he writes about an aspect of Aquinas thought he considers to be overestimated, his theory of 'Being'. And in the third he writes on another aspect of Aquinas thought he considers to be undervalued, his theory of ' Mind'. These last two chapters are quite difficult going, and are suitable for those who are willing to deal with ' hard and tough thinking'.
I did not find this to be one of the most interesting of 'The Past Masters' series works of which I have read many. I did however learn quite a bit about Aquinas including some of the legendary material. Against his family's will he became a Dominican . He was the most brilliant pupil of Albertus Magnus. In the' 'Summa' his method is to begin with the three most difficult objections to the religious claim he makes and then refute them all in one comprehensive answer. He was recognized in his own lifetime but it was only with the centuries that his thought became the central teaching of the Catholic Church on many matters.
Kenny claims the relative lack of interest in his philosophy today comes in part because it is in Latin, and in part because Philosophy today has different issues and vocabulary. His claim in this sense is that Aquinas is not appreciated as well as he should be today.

Very readable

Kenny's text on Aquinas is informative and to the point. If you want more than a shallow introduction to Aquinas' life and thought, this is an excellent place to begin. Like other contributions in the Past Masters series, the text offers a brief biography, articulates the main philosophical concerns, offers some criticism, then reflects on the consequences or influences of the subject under study.

I love this book and I have several books on Chinese brush painting. (I'd not part with any of them.) What I like is that she gives you a sense of porportion and she teaches you how to not just draw the figures but how to add to the subject and balance the picture. Chinese painting is about simplicity and doing it has taught me how to do more with my other works. This is a bit pedantic for intermediate artists but everyone can learn from it.

This is a delightful book

I painted some of the pictures as she directed, and I wasn't exactly skilled as she and yet the results were so charming people like them enough to hang them on the wall. She teaches technique, and its wonderful. :>

Exciting stuff. Truly cosmic poetry, about space, consciousness, existence, cosmology, the universe, love, men, women, flirting, babies, birds, fish, Martians, music, exotic dancers, growing up in China, travelling around the world, and everything in between.

What a rush. I was alternately astounded, shocked, confused, frightened, awed, amused, and delighted, by the very intelligent poetry in this book.

Yun Wang melds the magic of words with the magic of physics in the best of what poetry can and should offer. Her poems gift us with elegance and insight, opening dark places to light and - sometimes - to even darker places. The universe is captured in the immediate present, and she has the ability to make the past as immediate.

Brownies, Brownies!

Review Date: 2002-05-28
A classic tale using Brownies of legend, woven in with a moral of doing good and cleaning up. This is a nice book for parents and children, as it not only imparts the moral, but it also has wonderful illustrations and words that mimic the action described in them. It is a lot of fun to "bounce" and "creep" and "hop" along with the Brownies, as well as with the words on the page.

This book may also be added to the small body of books suitable for Pagan Parenting, even though there are indirect references by the Old Man and Old Woman characters to the Christian God through the phrase, "lawks-a-mercy". However, this doesn't detract from the fun and moral of the story.

I remember my Mother reading this book to me over 40 years ago. Now I am reading it regularly to my toddler & preschool aged boys. They look forward to the antics and helpful attitudes of the wee folk as much as I ever did. I find them asking to help and even volunteering on their own to do little chores/tasks around the house and yard just like the little folk in the story. What a charming thing to pleasantly teach children to help the old folks as well as to pitch in around their own home with a happy heart. It almost needs some "Whistle While You Work" music in the background! This is a book that definitely should be reprinted.

Written by Gabe T. Wang (Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology at William Paterson University), China and the Taiwan Issue: Impending War at Taiwan Strait is a critical examination of the modern political realities confronted by China, Taiwan, and the United States. The tensions between China and the independent Taiwan remain a persistent threat of instability in the region; China and the Taiwan Issue examines historical, cultural, and practical factors surrounding the issue and offers recommendations for peaceful solutions to potential conflict. Especially recommended reading for students of political science and foreign relations with China and Taiwan.

The most unique characteristic of this book is its comprehensive perspective on the Taiwan issue. After an introduction of the Taiwan issue in Chapter One, Chapter Two provided its readers with a concise but complete history of modern China, which is most fundamental in understanding the Chinese society and psychology about the internal and international politics. This brief history indicates why the Chinese are so anxious about getting Taiwan back. Then, Chapter Three provided the audience with a brief history of Taiwan, which informs the audience why many people in Taiwan want to become independent and why the Taiwan issue is so complicated. Chapter Four made a comparison of the socioeconomic development in both mainland China and Taiwan. The author seems to see more similarities than differences between the Taiwan Strait. This is very interesting and helpful, for most people are used to the Cold War stereotypes. Chapter Five described the U.S. involvement of the United States in the Taiwan issue and how the international politics influenced the United States decisions. It provides more information from the less known side of China. Chapter Six gave an account of the political relations between China and Taiwan with the involvement of the United States. Finally, Chapter Seven provides the author's analyses of the tri-part interactions between China and Taiwan as well as the United States. It also provided the readers with options for each of the three parties involved.

Compared with many books about Taiwan issue, this book is obviously less partial and has painted a more complete picture of the issue. It is less influenced by the prevailing and popular international politic ideologies; instead, it pays much more attention to the concerns and fundamental changes in both China and Taiwan. The book focuses on or intended to discuss about the Taiwan issue; however, it is also a good book to understand China, its politics, social problems, anxieties, the social and economic developments. It is a must read book for those who sincerely want to understand China. Although its subtitle is Impending War at Taiwan Strait, it actually does not talk about war.

D. Wang presents all of those favorite recipes in an incredibly workable style. A few of Wangs techniques apply to all of my efforts at reproducing restaurant dishes. The only crime is finding this book for my own shelves rather than checking it out of the library every week
