A visual history of social transformation in AustraliaReview Date: 2003-08-01
The highlights of an often chequered history of Australian immigration are vividly brought home by some very personal stories drawn from family albums, community organizations, and library archives. A group of Italian settlers from the Aeolian islands pose for the first annual picnic for Melbourne frutierrs in 1906. In another photo, six young Australians of German ancestry are photographed in a detention camp in Germany where they were held during the First World War together with British prsioners. There is the snapshot of one Australian solider from Darwin's Chinese commnity who was shot several times in New Guinea by fellow Australian soldiers during World War Two who mistook him for a Japanese. A photo from the 1960s shows the generational differences between adult members of a Spanish commnity in Whyalla singing and dancing to flamenco music and the younger Spanish girls who were kept in pants and never owned a flamenco dress. Photos of Malays and of Greeks show the diverse specialist skills which were attracted into Australia's pearling industry. The chronicle of the 1970s and 1980s reveal the changing composition of immigrants, with Asian and African faces increasingly showing up in the photos.
This book is a remarkable and informative piece of historical research judiciously combined with a rich portfolio of images of a nation which has become vastly transformed in a hundred years.

Still one of the finest commentaries on the CatechismReview Date: 2002-07-12
This is not an introduction for the beginner, but a scholarly commentary for a serious student of the Catechism. The book consists of a collection of 25 essays, each addressing a section of the catechism, and each by an author with expertise in that area. At 512 pages, this book delves deeply and critically into the contents of the Catechism.
Shortcomings? I discovered a certain uneveness in this commentary. With 25 authors, I suppose this is to be expected. For example, the essay on the Holy Spirit describes the contents in detail, comments on each subsection, discusses the sources, and identifies strengths and weaknesses. Meanwhile, the essay entitled "More than Law and Precept: Commandments 1-3" provides an assessment of the overall theological approach of that section of the catechism, but gives little attention to particulars - to the extent that it does not even address the 3rd commandment. Each essay is useful in its own way. But I think this overall uneveness is a weakness.
Nonetheless, for anyone seeking a substantial commentary on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, this is one.

An honest political autobiography - you better believe it.Review Date: 2000-08-11
The book starts with his birth in rural Western Australia in 1935, follows his time through the Whitlam Years, the Fraser Years and the Hawke Years.
It is not a comprehensive history of Australian politics during the 1980's. There are other books that do that. This volume is a good report on what happened on the inside.
Walsh doesn't change his views after the fact. His recording of history is consistant with what actually happened. It is a refreshing read for people who already know a bit about the Australian Political situation at the time.

Simple Explanations of Pain's Causes and Possible RemediesReview Date: 2001-09-28
Having learned that much in 15 years, I was pleased to see these same lessons spelled out in Erasing Pain. Not only that, but the authors have taken 77 categories of diseases and described their causes, typical pain associated with them, and outlined some potential forms of relief.
The authors work at the Rusk Institute in New York City where a holistic approach is taken to the patient's pain. This includes looking at emotions, psychology, social needs related to ailments and disabilities, as well as how the patient's life environment may be contributing. One man in pain was jogging with a large dog on a leash. When he stopped taking the dog along at the doctors' suggestion, his pain eventually went away.
The book is designed to help patients in pain communicate with their physicians. "We believe that the medical profession treats patient pain very inadequately, sometimes badly." "Most doctors are poorly trained to deal with the phenomenon . . . ."
To make the material more accessible, it is in a question-and-answer format. The questions are the ones that patients in pain answer the most often.
The book also gives the patient new ways to communicate about pain, including how intense the pain is on a scale of one to ten and its exact analogy in other experiences with pain that are widely occurring (burning, stinging, raw, sensitive, throbbing, or sharp as some examples).
Best of all, the book is very open to exploring alternative therapies, and explains why they may work.
In my case, one cause of pain was in a place where I felt no pain. People in pain typically only notice the source of pain that is most intense at the moment. I have very flat feet, and needed orthotics. With them, my back stopped putting pressure on my sciatic nerve and most of my leg pain went away after some chiropractic treatments. After eliminating many sources of pain in this sort of indirect way, I finally got to the point where I could feel the pain in my feet. With self massage, I can get a lot of relief from that pain. Exercise, reading, music, and meditation all help (as the book suggests they usually do).
My only complaint about this book is that it definitely over does describing what can be treated at the Rusk Institute. Much of the beginning of the book reads like a marketing brochure for the institute. Although it is good to know about the credentials of those who are writing a book, I prefer books that do so much more unobtrusively than this one. I graded the book down one star for this. On pain-related content only, this is definitely a five-star book.
If you have pain and cannot go to the Rusk Institute, definitely read this book and apply its lessons. It could make all the difference in how much pain you experience!
May you live in pain-free peace!

In the book I used a family systems approach for the analysis of (1) family problems and (2) organizational/management problems.
I still use the book in my teaching and I plan to author a popular book using the same concepts.
