Deep, rich history, unusual perspective; enthralling
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-26
Although Mr. Walsh writes from a traditional Catholic perspective, his work is in many ways exemplary for an historian.

I have read several works on the amazing 16th Century and it has been a learning experience in the way "historians" make strong statements that when you have read the letters of the people involved, when you understand the conditions under which decisions were made, often these statements of historians turn out to be shallow or ridiculous. Such an understanding is what Mr. Walsh provides.

Walsh said of his own work, of the history he sought to clarify, "It is a tale so dramatic, so fascinating, that it needs no embellishing or piecing out with the wisdom - or folly - of another age. To probe the inner cosmos of men and women long dead by the light of a pseudo-science, to strip away with pitiless irony all noble or generous appearances, to pry open with an air of personal infallibility the very secret hinges of the door to that ultimate sanctuary of the human conscience which is inviolable even to father confessors - that is an office for which I have neither the taste nor the talent; and if I have fallen unawares into any such pitfalls of the devils of megalomania, I beg forgiveness in advance."

No forgiveness is needed.

Because Philip forbid writers of his biographiess, and because of the betrayal of his secretary and William the Orange and their outright lies, a "Black Legend" was raised for several hundred years of vicious character assassination of Philip and his people.

Mr. Walsh, to be objective, does color events sometimes with his love of Catholicism, white washing some errors and flaws of character of Philip II, Alba and Co.

Because Walsh has quite excellent moral qualities with which he views history, one gets a deeper sense of the important factors in men and their decisions. I found it to be an education in character development to read this book.

For spiritual people, this may be a fascinating story and help one to think more deeply about the issues that were active then and resound today.

For students of history, this can be a cold bucket of water showing the appaulling shoddiness of what passes as "history," which is not only often boring but shallow and often patently false.

This book goes more into the realities of the geo-strategic forces at play during Philip's time than all the others I have read combined. It is an eye-opener to learn of the actual forces at play behind the scenes in the rise of Protestantism and the Moslem attacks upon Christendom, as well as the appauling lack of character of William of Orange and company. At least according to Walsh.

Highly recommended.

Scholarly, but rich and entertaining

This is an excellent, and quite scholarly, book. Walsh tells the story of Spain, as well as England, France, and much of the rest of Europe, during the 16th century, not from the usual perspective of the English Protestant historians, but rather from the point of view of the Catholics of the time. The richness of detail is amazing: the author describes everything down to the clothing everyone wore, and in such vibrantly colorful language that the reader feels as if he is really there. It reads more like a novel, being not at all dry like many other serious histories, yet he backs up his work with pages and pages of footnotes, many in the original Spanish, latin and old English. A must-read for anyone interested in getting the other side of the great drama of the 16th Century. I would also recommend Walsh's wonderful "Isabella of Spain," for more on the Conquistadors, the discovery and colonization of America, and the Inquisition.

I recommend this book for its perspective. The author presents a thorough historical account of the subject which is informed by the traditional Roman Catholic viewpoint. As time goes by, and historical revisionism and cultural change accelerate, this books serves as a good recounting of the deeds of Philip II who stands out as one of the aristocratic heroes of a formerly united Christendom.

A truly great work of history for anyone who believes that detailed research, thoughtful analysis, and intellectual honesty are vital for the study of history. Beautifully written, more than adequately referenced (the footnotes are like a small archives), and convincingly portrayed, this book is the finest scholarly work available on Philip II of Spain, with the possible exception of Kamen's recent 'Philip of Spain'. The biggest difference between the two is that Walsh's came about 60 years earlier! Corrects much of the error and bias inherent in other english works on the topic (Hume, Prescott and Merriman for example.) Essential for understanding both Philip and his times.

Truly Great!

William Thomas Walsh's "Philip II" is perhaps the greatest historical biography it has ever been my pleasure to read. Walsh covers the life and times of this man, perhaps the greatest and most powerful monarch in European history with wonder and a proper sense of awe, coupled with serious scholarship and lilting prose. Philip strode across 16th century Reformation Europe like his crusading great grandmother, Isabella. Ruling a Spanish empire that stretched from Madrid to Manila, he was truly the first monarch in history on whose dominions the sun never set. More than any other man of his age, to include those who sat on the throne of Saint Peter, Philip preserved Europe for the Faith to the extent humanly possible. A true servant of Christ, the Catholic King inveighed against the Jews, freemasons, Moslems, and Protestants, who then sought the destruction of Christendom. We heartily recommend Walsh's terrific biography of this great man and suggest also his excellent "Isabella of Spain", written of course about Philip's illustrious ancestor.

I have utilized this handbook since I was in the seventh grade (1956). It is absolutely the most concise, "user friendly" guide to English grammar that I have ever encountered. It is especially helpful for those who have had difficulty understanding complex English textbooks.

Since the seventh grade, the Plain English Handbook (1959 Edition) has been for me an extremely useful guide to the use of English grammar. Over the years, this little handbook has proven its worth through junior and senior high school, college, and in my engineering profession. I have been a practicing engineer for 25 years, and have used it in the office as a writer's guide and at home as a teaching tool for my kids. Two of my kids are now in college, and one is in high school. Nothing I've encountered has equaled the simple-to-understand format used in this handbook. It helps one to find a concise answer quickly. I highly recommend this handbook to anyone who writes English, whether in school or in business. It's that good!

Any concept that was in your grade school English text book will be here. That concept will be concentrated into the most concise description possible and an example will be given. There are no exercises to test you. This book is not designed to teach you English from scratch. It is an easy to navigate reference that has everything in it. If you are fluent in English and can read and write alright but want to brush up, then this is the perfect book. The descriptions are short, but they are easy to understand and give enough information.

The first half of the book is on grammar. Each grammatical concept gets a few sentences to describe it and an example. The second is on how to write better. Once again each tip gets a short description and an example. Walsh is not trying to teach you how to write by some method. Instead he has points like having a unified theme for the paragraph and tips on how to emphasize a particular point you are making. He also has samples of different types of letters. So even though he is discussing style he is keeping the discussion very objective.

This is a very practical and easy to navigate book on grammar. Now I am out of school and trying to navigate the real world, where how I present myself actually matters. In trying to better my grammar and writing this is an excellent tool. (Of course Walsh would be completely revolted by the grammar of this review. I am trying to review what basically amounts to all the grammar in the entire English language here and it is not so simple.)

If you want practical, then this is the book for you. School libraries should keep a copy for students to access. Anyone who has to write regularly should be familiar with this reference.

(This review is for the 1946 edition, which has only 136 pages.)

I have literally dozens of old English grammar books, and I have both the 1951 and 1972 editions of this Walsh book. The latter is the better, in my opinion, though both are indispensable. The books are both concise and traditional in terminology and denotation. If you want an orthodox resource for traditional English grammar, buy this book.

Here is a bold and well-documented argument that the Abe Lincoln-Ann Rutledge romance was real and not the stuff of legend or outright fabrication. Walsh presents testimony from numerous persons who knew Lincoln and Rutledge. Although I don't accept every source Walsh uses, I find the cumulative impact of his research to be persuasive.

Definitely the best book on Abe and Ann!

This was an excellent book regarding the story of Lincoln and Ann Rutledge! Logical and concise--well worth the read! And I like the fact it doesn't bash Mary Todd Lincoln. The two relationships were at different times with different Lincolns---apples and oranges!

Unraveling the rise of a shadowy legend

Review Date: 2005-02-21
The Abraham Lincoln/Ann Rutledge romance is once again being debated among historians; any who want to get to the source of the legend would do well to start here.
Walsh does not write histories, so much as stories about how history is written. He takes small but important moments in American history - Lincoln's fabled "Almanac murder trial," or the hanging of British spy Major Andre during the Revolutionary War - and methodically peels away the layers of revisionist history to give us an unvarnished look at the event through the eyes of those who experienced it. At the same time, he lets us see how layer upon layer of scholarly interpretation can muddy the waters of our past to the point that the truth is all but invisible. In "The Shadows Rise," he meticulously traces how Lincoln's chief 19th-century biographer, William Herndon, first heard eyewitness accounts that, while living in New Salem, young Lincoln fell in love with, and became engaged to, a lovely, bright and popular woman named Ann Rutledge. Tracing all existing accounts of former New Salemites, he puts together a convincing and warmly human portrait of Lincoln's first love, and of her tragic death. In all, more than 20 people who knew Lincoln and Rutledge in New Salem (the entire population of which was only around 100) testified the two were in love and engaged, but historians - often basing their opinions on other historians' analysis, rather than first-hand understanding of eyewitness testimony - have hotly debated the story since Herndon first went public with it shortly after Lincoln's death in 1865. The book succeeds in revealing a tender and telling chapter in young Lincoln's life, and in introducing us to a charming young woman it is difficult not to fall a little in love with yourself. Perhaps most importantly, it also shows how much confusion historians can cause when they spend too much time talking to each other, and not enough time listening to the real voices of the past. This is a marvelously readable book, equal parts history and detective story, that will have history buffs thinking about the past in some new and important ways.

This is a book that has been 50 years overdue. The book effectively destroys the unwarrented attack on Ann Rutledge by Mary Todd Lincoln's defenders. Walsh shows that not a single person in New Salem at the time denied the affair. It was only when the Randalls in the mid-20th century decided to become Mary Todd Lincoln's defence attorneys that there was even a question about Ann Rutledge's affair with Lincoln.

A question that has never been answered is why did it matter? Why did MTL's defenders feel it cast aspertions on MTL if Lincoln was involved with a woman four years before he even met her?

Whether you work in a large company or small, are new to business or are a long-time professional, you will find something invaluable in this book. I bought the 1st edition, and this 2nd edition adds several new sections: there is a whole new chapter devoted to Human Resources, and great sections on holding a strategic planning meeting and writing a business plan. This book should be on every business person's bookshelf - you'll use it again and again.

I found the worksheets alone in this book worth the price. When you follow the step-by-step instructions, the worksheets cull out only the data you need. With all the extraneous data out of the way, it's easy to pinpoint critical problems that you might miss otherwise. And it makes developing key indicators and reports easier as well. I think any CEO who wants to keep the company's accounting and human resource managers on top of things at all times should give them this book tomorrow...if not sooner.

This book is the most extensive single source of urologic information available. It covers all basic aspects of urology in a fairly complete manner. The main drawbacks are:
1)Reference authors quoted directly in text. This makes the book fairly diffcult to read in a fluid manner and adds extra length to the already lengthy text. Gillenwater is a much more readble text.
2)Some chapters need a better overall framework. The best example of this is the chapter on adrenal pathology which does not provide a very good thorough to the asymptomatic adrenal mass, by far the most common adrenal problem.
3)Often excessive discussion regarding all the studies for and against an issue. I feel that it would be better to state that an issue is unresolved and then list some appropriate ways of attacking the problem.
4)Certain chapters are written in the 1st person. The chapter on the technique of radical retropubic prostatectomy is a personal account and not a reference chapter. MAny innovations from other centers are missing making this chapter somewhat biased.

Overall an excellent and authoratative view or urology

Medicine is obviously a rapidly evolving field and most medical texts receive a periodic retooling. All revisions should be as thorough and meaningful as the Seventh edition of Campbell's. The text has been sucessfully expanded where appropriate and each section further honed. Figures are elegant, pertinent, and well rendered. The references are all encompassing and as current as one can expect in a volume such as this. If there are any hesitations about updating from the sixth edition (which was also a vast improvement from the fifth) I hope to assuage them, encourage the reader and congratulate the authors.

My baby is now 10 1/2 months old and this is one of his most favorite books! The illustrations captivated him months ago, especially the owl eyes! He loves when I make the animal noises and make the bee (my finger) buzz around his head, on his nose and in his ear. We've read some of Melanie Walsh's other books together and he thoroughly enjoyed them as well, but this one is great because, being a board book, he can page through it himself. I've given this as a gift to other new parents and will soon have to get another copy to replace my son's, as it is getting rather worn. I know we will continue to enjoy it as his language skills develop! It's eye candy and lots of fun!

My six year old niece is absolutely obsessed with Melanie Walsh! She calls her "my favourite arthur". She is just beginning to read, and enjoys the colourful pictures. She has even gone so far as to reproduce the artwork from Do Donkeys Dance. These books keep her involved and interested with a series of questions. (Do chickens swim underwater? No! Fish swim underwater.) It is very difficult to maintain her attention, however, these books work marvelously! They have brought her hours of enjoyment. A must for children on the brink of independent reading!

This is a great book to read aloud. It shows a picture of an animal with a nonsenical question (eg "do monkeys tweet?" "do lambs go bzzz"?). Then overleaf you see the animal that DOES make that noise. My two year old son loves making the noises that go with the animals and calling "No!" at the top of his lungs in response to each question.

Melanie Walsh has written three similar books but this is the best one for younger readers because the animals are shown in full on both the question and answer pages. Thus it's a great book for building vocabularies and explaining what noises different animals actually make.

It's also a great book to read aloud to a group of kids because the pictures and words are large and clear.

I'd unhesitatingly recommend it for children 18 months and up.

Melanie Walsh's artwork is simple but yummy to look at--and there's some subtle humor going on in the drawings as well (a horse with a bone in his mouth--"Do horses bark?"). Each question posed elicits a chuckle and if you make the correct animal sounds when you turn the page, it can inspire more laughter. My 1-year-old son fell in love with this book immediately--usually it takes several readings before he warms up to a title. Walsh has done an excellent job for an early baby book, and I'm planning to look for the others she has done--I think her ability to capture a 1-year-old's attention immediately makes her work a worthwhile purchase.

A highly recommended book.

I Just wish Prima had put out a Guide for Enter the Matrix, Brady Games' guides are offen confusing and of sub-standard quality. This one isn't that bad, it has all the basic info and even insights in to the hacking System. But here's were it goes bad:

* The Pre-Walktrhough Chapter has no more info that the Manual

* The Walkthroughs lack maps, and sometimes that's all you need.

* Numerous Typos in the Encoded messages make decoding them in the Hacking a nightmare.

* The Dificluty estimates are way off.

* They forgot to show you how to make the HoverCraft MOVE!

* Enter the Matrix is one of those games were the path is pretty clear and in MOST(not all) cases you don't even need the Strategy guide.

* On the Plus side, even with the typos, it makes the Hacking System MUCH easier to figure out.

My Advice? Don't order it here, go to a store and flip through it a bit to see if it's what your looking for, and make your own decision.

How To Be Cherished is based on the premise that when you love yourself, you are irresistible. It beckons you to remember when you were first in love, how you glowed and people loved being around you because you radiated happiness. The love you shared with your partner made life seem good and you were sure you would be happy forever.

Then reality slowly settled in and the rough edges began to show-old hurts that have not properly healed, lack of self-love and beliefs and patterns of behavior that no longer serve us. When our rough edges collide with the rough edges of our partner, it can be profoundly painful and our first response is to run the other way. How To Be Cherished gives us other options and guides readers toward a positive way to think about relationships and their inherent challenges.

According to the authors, women are trained from childhood to think happiness will come when they find the right partner. This book reveals how women can find and keep the happiness they seek by first taking care of their own needs and embracing their own power; chapters include "When You're Hysterical, It's Historical" and "Opening Your Heart to Yourself," among others. This is the third book in a series of 12 planned books based on highly successful workshops and courses created by Graman and Walsh.

Participants in these workshops come to life on the pages of this book. Intended for women in all stages of relationship, it offers a new model for relationships by recognizing women's intrinsic power and revealing the deep desire men have to please. It lays bare the assumptions and expectations that keep women from finding love that lasts and is a manual for meaningful relationship exploration.

The third volume in a planned twelve titles series from Life Works Books, and accessibly co-written for the non-specialist general reader by professional psychotherapist Marilyn Graman and workshop developer Maureen Walsh, How To Be Cherished: A Guide To Having The Love You Desire is an effective, "do-it-yourself" guide to keeping relationships nurtured, including maintaining that special feeling characteristic of the early days with a beloved friend, spouse, or life partner. How To Be Cherished is an invigorating guide to revitalizing mutual happiness based on opening one's heart, seeing through the man's eyes, knowing what pitfalls to avoid, and more.

Over time long-term relationships often cool and have their problems. This is never truer than a romantic relationship between a man and a woman. The purpose of "How to Be Cherished" is to help women figure out not only why your relationship might not be all you want it to be but also what you can do to make it the relationship you want. By following the advice of the authors you can make yourself irresistible while also avoiding relationship pitfalls and before you know it you will realize you have the relationship you want. Even if your relationship is already good, you can make it even better. That's a pretty big promise to make but after reading the book I think they rise to the challenge.

If you are angry, if you are disappointed, even if you feel powerless in your relationship, you are powerful and can change it. The first couple of chapters look at how strongly you affect the man in your life by your actions, comments, moods, and attitude. As a man I have to say that the authors hit the nail right on the head here. The woman generally sets the emotional tone in a relationship. Men tend to be pretty much in emotional neutral most of the time until the woman sets the tone. You are a lot more powerful than you think!

I found chapters three and four particularly interesting. Chapter three deals with the fact that we all have a past. To understand why people do what they do it is often important to understand their past and how it affects them now. You have a past that you bring into the relationship, and he has a past that he brings into the relationship. Understanding this helps you to understand each other. The fourth chapter builds on this by looking at the fact that when you become hysterical and over react to something minor then what you are reacting to is something in your history. Hence the chapter title, "When You're Hysterical, It's Historical". The authors point out that it can be your history, his history or both of your histories, but either way it is your past controlling the situation. A healing process needs to start here to allow you to move forward in a positive relationship.

The next chapter starts the section on the actual keys to becoming cherished. There is some really powerful stuff here. Some of the real gems include empowering things like "stop feeling like your relationship is happening to you"; you are a part of it and can affect what happens. Other great sections include learning forgiveness, how to stop pushing love away, and a great section on different aspects of love and becoming the object of his affection.

Another really good chapter is "Thirteen Facts About Men". The title caught my attention right away as I wondered whether these two women really understood men or not. Well, they got this one totally accurate again. If women really understood these things their relationship would be different. While I may not agree with some of their explanations for why a particular trait is true they do get all thirteen of these totally accurate (even if some men wouldn't admit it). The book is worth the price just for this chapter alone.

Of course there is a lot more to the book than just the portions I mentioned above. I have to admit that my first reaction on receiving the book was that it was just another relationship book like the many others on the market. I could not have been more wrong. This is an exceptional book that is in a class of its own when it comes to relationship books. "How To Be Cherished" is a highly recommended read for women everywhere.

Learning how to cherish is healing.

If you saw an attitude of cherishing between a couple, even if you didn't recognize it as such, probably you would yearn to be treated like that. Chances are not good that you can "find" such a relationship, but the exciting news from these authors is that you can create it. "You are more powerful than you think," the authors say. Let me give you one of their secrets: how you treat your partner is what will bring about cherishing, and the authors give very specific things to do and not to do. Another attitude that isn't mentioned much, but it's there in the book, is the importance of maintaining a sense of mutual respect. Betrayal, mean-mouthing, and neglect will surely kill a cherishing relationship. The best part is that the process is harmonious, freeing, and can release stress. The authors admit that there are relationships in which cherishing can't happen, but most often it can. Very healing in our sad world.

Being Cherished is incredible!

I love the results of doing the work in this book. Oddly enough I was doing the work to improve my marriage, that was predictable after 13 years of marriage and neglected due to the very full nature of our life (two kids, two jobs, several rent houses, and a very successful business, and the accumulation of lots of stuff). And my marriage remains good, ahh but my relationship with my husband is definitely getting back to glowing.

But a surprise result is having so much more patience with my children -- I can be in my heart during stressful times, more consistently, with compassion not irritation or anger. I am ever so grateful for this. It will change our lives, and open a future for myself, my husband, and my children that wouldn't have been possible before.

So I did a workshop in New York with Marilyn and Maureen. And have been able to see my part of the problems of my life and I will tell you that I have successfully tolerated my discomfort as I addressed some home issues for me and my husband. What is so great is that now they are MY problems and not that my husband IS the problem. I mean I have seen my part in the problem, and have been able to take care of myself and take care of him (that wonderful man who loves me) so that we could resolve the problem.

In one instance I have figured out how I was irritating my husband by not finishing, which kept me and him stuck. And that I have actually spent the time to determine what will really work for me so that I will be happy -- really worked to design the solution to the problem -- and in so doing have discovered something that will really work for me AND him.

And, my sweet husband -- While there is much repair to do, the work has begun. All by owning my part of the problem. So the long hours away at the office, don't upset me so much, and I am happily going to his office to work with him(rather than being angered by it), and the extra stuff we've accumulated is no longer an obstacle, just an e-bay opportunity IF he is okay with it being sold, and I've begun paying attention to the things that I do that irritate him -- and owning my part -- and doing something about it. And trusting that I can talk it through, and listening listening listening.

Amazing Amazing Amazing. And I am ever so grateful.

Life is Tough but God is Faithful is one of the most touching books I have ever read. Sheila Walsh always tells the honest truth about life and how God controlls it all. It will help you through the pain to see how God can change lemons in to lemonade. Sheila shows you that God in in charge, and lets Him truly speak through her. Her book Honestly almost leads you into this one, with its story of her struggle. If anyone is in pain, pick up this book or Honesly, then pick up a Bible.

Love this book. The large lap-sized board book style is wonderful way to enjoy the colors. Simple, but fun story demonstrating color mixing. Great illustrations. Has inspired many painting projects by my 2 year old!

I also recommend Mouse Shapes by same author.

I purchased this book for my 7th month old son. This book is clearly targeted at an older child, but my son does enjoy the graphics and the feel/taste of the book :-). The text/story line is something he will eventually grown into. I can image this being a fun book to read before/after arts & crafts - the child will definitely identify with the mice jumping into the paint and will take away some great ideas for mixing colors the next time he/she paints.

The book is very large. "Lap-size" apparently refers to an adult lap as opposed to a child's lap. I personally prefer the smaller board books as my son can hold them himself and pull them closer to his face to look at/chew on.

Wonderful book!

My three-month old son doesn't have much of an attention span, but he stares mesmerized at this book! I enjoy reading it to him frequently - the images are simple yet very well done, the text is interesting and fun, and the story is very cute. I'm sure I'll be reading it to him over and over and over. The large size is great for a baby, it is easy to hold him on my lap with the book in front of us. Great book to start reading to an infant, and I'm looking forward to continuing with it when he's older and can start to learn about mixing colors. I'll be buying more of Ms. Walsh's books!

I am an elementary art teacher, National Board certified, and this is one of my favorite books for my classroom. I use this in my lesson introducing Kindergarten students to primary and secondary colors. It is always a favorite. When I do color units with my older kids...all the way to fifth grade, they ask me to read them that book again. This book is truly a favorite for me and my students.

Wonderful book to teach primary colors

I have a master's in education, and when I had my own kids, I started looking for good books that would be read over and over. This book teaches about color mixing through mice. I am glad that I bought the lap-size edition so that all the kids can see. It was well worth the extra money spent. If you buy 25.00 worth of eligible books with amazon, you get free shipping too. I am pleased with the book, durability, cost, and shipping of this book.
