I'm going to read again the lies mr. walsh wrote about my father. My dad is a real hero who happened to get on Mr. Walsh's bad side by stealing all his girlfriends. So, sorry Mr. Walsh... Should we even metion your obsession with Jane Fonda and how my dad covered up your secret ops! Ooops did I say that! Listen, if you are going to bash national heros...make sure you are telling the truth. You are lucky my family is a "turn the other cheek" crowd. Otherwise, Leonard Horst's kids would sue you for trashing his good name and causing him more grief. You know you all did things for this government you regret. You are the least of my Dad's issues. The only people you hurt are his family. Dad deserves respect, not to be slimed by an ego driven man. The only reason he isn't telling his stories...and he has real ones to tell...unlike your lies...is because he still considers his operations top-secret. He considers himself top secret. I hope you got burned for writing this crap. And don't think I'm chewing you a new one because I think my dad is perfect. I don't even talk to the man. But listen here Mr. Walsh. My dad is an American hero and doesn't deserve to be pulled through your latrine because of some stupid jealousy. My dad doesn't even know how to fly a helocopter; let alone good enough to chase you into a latrine! But I wish he had! You deserve it! Get over your lost girlfriends! It's not his fault your girlfriends weren't into you...and went after my TALL sexy dad! If people want to read a REAL book about the Seals... Look up a book by Barry Enoch. He tells it like it is and gives the men the respect they deserve. Unlike this guys sick publiciy stunt.

I served with Commander Mike Walsh During his tour of duty in Panama 84-86 I was attached to Naval Station Panama Canal, Combat Craft Unit. I was Boat Captain of PCF-4.(Patrol Craft Fast) As a Gunners Mate Guns Petty Officer First Class. Commander Walsh was a true professional. A great man on or off duty. I read this book in one day. Truly one of the best books that I have read in my life. Made me feel that I was back in Panama conducting support for the various Special Warefare Units that worked with. Iam proud to say that I knew Commander Walsh. A man that never forgot where he came from...

SEAL is still one of the best memoires available today!!!
After completing this work, I was blessed to locate and actually spend some time with the author.
Put succinctly, Mike Walsh possesses more personal integrity, patriotism, and courageous resolve than most anyone above ground today.
His book is a gift to Americans concerned with guts, veracity, and acquiring an education from perceptions only viewable through the eyes of a highly intelligent and intrepid warrior.
The California clown that offers the "get over yourself" review below obviously is blind to understanding that even a humble man
like Mr. Walsh, tasked with attempting to record his extremely extraordinary life, will seem (to an ignoramus) to be boastful.
Mike Walsh is not a boastful man.
SEAL is the truthful product of a matured, religious individual whose personal discipline, devotion to country, and unpoliticized insights offers this nation's youth a measuring stick for honor.
Although my service was with the army, I would follow this naval 'Commander' into hell if he so desired.
SEAL is strong evidence that Mike Walsh knows all about that arena.
Americans need to read this one.
It'll make your chest stick out a bit further.

This book was riveting! It provided historical value with a personal component that truly engages the reader. The book gave insight to why certain missions were successful, and how some missions went wrong. Lt Mike Walsh has helped me to realize that our nation is not asleep! Now that we are engaged in war with Iraq, I was able to imagine the in's and out's of the recent successful SEAL mission to secure the two oil wells on 3/21/03. And finally, Lt Walsh's personal life-changing testimony is wonderful! Thanks, Lieutenant!

Two stars for the historical facts, zero for the self-admiring, self-adoring, self-aggrandizing tone that permeates every page. SEALS, the elite, the best, the true warriors, etc., etc. Gimmie a break. A touch of the short-man's complex, I think - Mike tells us in glorious detail how very wonderful he was and all of the great things that he did. The only folks portrayed in a better light in the book are "SEAL legends".... I mean, c'mon, let's have less bias, please! He makes brief mention of the Green Berets, Aplini, SAS and Aussie SAS in the book, praising them, but it's otherwise "SEALS rule, don't mess with us, we're fierce warriors!". Listen, Bud, if you need to keep telling everyone this all the time, it's obvious that you don't believe it yourself.

The true warriors are the ones that Mike doesn't know about - they do their job well and no one ever knows it was done. No mention of these truly elite operators in this book. The self-congratulatory tone is almost nauseating in many chapters. There are so, so many books about elite forces and Viet nam, all available on AMAZON, that are much better than this hymn to SEALS.

Here's another great book to read "SISTER LUCIA APOSTLE OF MARY'S IMMACULATE HEART". You can order it at the website "Fatima.org". Remember the frist two messages that were told to the three seers .....From the words and mouth of Jesus and Mary, Russia is going to spread it's errors throughout the entire world and many nations will be annihilated. This is the reason why the Pope must listen to the Virgin Mary's messages, The Holy See must Consecrate Russia to Our Mother 's (Mary) Immaculate heart. If this is not done, there is gong to be a great chastisement from God. For some unknown reason the Pope and his staff feel as though mentioning the word RUSSIA in the Consecretion will offend Russia. We may not be here on earth when the chastisment comes, but this is one of the messages that was given to the three seers to give to the Holy See (Pope). That's why we must Pray the Rosary everyday to change the hearts of those in the Vatican so that the consecration of Russia is completed by the Bishops along with the Pope and lay Persons of the world.

Or as we could say, "Everything you dont need to know about the true Fatima events". Yes, the old rumor is a conquerer of our crowds, without chances to know the real and original reports about
Fatima events. Do they really know, ie. that the Portuguese daily press pubished in February 1917 a few reports made by Spiritist groups in Lisbon and Porto ( the major national cities )announced that "in May 13 a great anounce would happen". Well, the catholics believers can not see here a proof for their devotion; by the contrary, the Spiritists don't agree with the official Marian apparitions interpretation and they would not be the promotors of the present Fatima status. So, it's nonsense to think in a conspiracy catholic-spiritist in this preannounce in the portuguese press with 3 months in advance.
So, the traditional interpretation has to be revised. The believers will have to know the original reports on the phenomena and not pious third-hand slogans that repeat the well known rumor processs in Psychology. Who said that the Marian apparitions never could be understand by Science is mistaken. Try to read
"Heavenly lights" and "Celestial Secrets" by Portuguese historians Dr. Joaquim Fernandes and Fina d'Armada to learn what happened at Fatima 1917.

I bought this book because I love reading about Marian apparitions, and I have always believed in what took place at Fatima in 1917. This book goes into full detail about the children and their lives. It describes their daily life, their family, and the events that led up to the apparitions. It really gives you a clear understanding of what all took place during the apparitions, and give you the true story of what the children experienced and suffered during this time. This book also continues to tell us what happened to the children and fanilies after the apparitions, which was very interesting. The descrition of the Oct. 13th apparition is extraordinary! It will WOW you! This is a terrific book about Fatima. If you want the full story of what happened, then get this book!

The facts surrounding Our Lady of Fatimas appearance in Portugal is well documented with further light being shed by quick synopsis's by various reviewers here. If you are interested in what happened at Fatima than this dated book will work temporarily because it is complete but lacks up to the moment developments. However, the account serves it's pupose and is a springboard for further investigtion into the various issues tthat are yet to be resolved. The Third Secret remains to this day a major source of controversy especially since Sister Lucia, the last surviving member has passed away. The conclusions you draw will be based on fact and faith but whether the truth has ever been rightfully or fully revealed is something that will require further reading. The Fatima Crusader is a good source of ongoing information on current develpments as is the work of Father Gruner. If you want a basic account of the circumstances surrounding Our Lady of Fatima this is a book for you. This book is a good place to begin if you are interested but I would recommend others as well like "The Devil's Final Battle." This book is like a quite meditation; it is even more important now than when it was written nearly sixty years ago.

Wonderful Catholic historian William Thomas Walsh here relates the amazing and true story of the three peasant children who were witnesses to the apparation of Our Lady of Fatima. They were first visited by the Angel of Peace, Archangel Michael. Later, on the 13th of each month, they were visited by the Blessed Mother of God. On the final visitation, October 13,1917, she performed a miracle, witnessed by thousands. It was "the day the Sun danced".

Reading Walsh's beautiful and appealing manuscript, one is taken right back to Portugal in the days of the Great War. We come to indentify with the peasant children, with their awesome spirituality, and their amazing courage. Careful reading of this wonderful book would seem to compel us all to pick up a rosary, to pray, to console, and to work for peace with all our might. In this, the work is timeless; and we hope it will always be read by seekers after the truth.

Walsh ends this magnificent little book by recording his personal interview with the only surviving witness, Lucia, then a nun. The picture is awesome and riveting, this most Catholic of modern historians, this most gentle and humble of sisters. It is quite beautiful enough to change our fallen world. Read this. And be richly blessed by the experience.

I found out about this book through the author's extensive website. I'm not even from New York and I found it to be really interesting, and I'd definitely take the book with me if I were ever to visit town. Of course, this is just a sampling of what this author is capable of - the website is amazing, and in many ways I hope that some of the material from the site could make a commpanion volume. Great work from everyone involved.

wonderful guide to the real New York

Every large city has its famous landmarks & signature structures which define it in the eyes of the world. For New York, the statue of Liberty, the Empire State building, Times Square and, after 9/11, the absence of the World Trade Towers. These are the sights that travellers and tourists want to see, and having seen them, think that they have "done" New York.
But they have surely missed the best part.

The real New York, the soul and spirit and humanity of old New York is not so obvious, although it is everywhere around. It is found in its quiet corners and intimate spaces, on its avenues and in its old neighbourhoods with names like Flatbush, Canarsie, Vinegar Hill, Spuyten Duyvil, Flushing, Astoria or Greenwich Village. It is found in the vestiges and the relics of New York's disappearing past.

"Forgotten New York" is a wonderful guidebook to 300 years of colourful personages, events and architecture found throughout all five of the City's boroughs, a guide to memories hidden in plain sight. These include many parks, alleys, doorways, gates, theatres, statues, fountains, clocks, lampposts, views, bridges, a lighthouse, signs, plaques, museums, homesteads, facades, monuments and even some ornate iron ventilation shafts.

It is profusely illustrated with photos and numerically keyed maps which make it easy to discover dozens of little gems of history right around the corner from where you live (you Lucky New Yorkers!) or not-so far from those cousins in Queens or old friends in Brooklyn you always meant to visit.
Even for a retired armchair traveller like myself, this book is a passport to rich and vibrant world far removed from the stereotyped New York we thought we knew.

Although I live in a small town in Nevada, my daughterlives in New York City. She's an actress, and if you want to act on stage you almost have to live in New York.

We were in a book store and found this book. In flipping it over I found a really neat looking German style beet garden. I asked her where it was, and it was just around the corner, down a few blocks from her apartment. In looking at the book we found all kinds of neat places to go visit, far more than the conventional guide books.

Since she started rehersals while I was visiting, I took the book and did a great deal of walking around the city. One thing I found was an amazing amount of wreckage that you wonder why someone hasn't taken over, built something that uses the wreckage as art and developed into very expensive housing.

Basically this book is a collection of literally hundreds of interesting little tidbits from the past. They are broken down into five general categories:

Quiet Places
Truly Forgotten
History Happened Here
What is this Thing
Forgotten People.

As the author says, all you need is a metro-Card and a good pair of walking shoes.

I really like these books. This one is one of the best I have read so far. Marty and Clark go to visit Missy on her ranch in the west. During this visit they show that anything is possible with God and they make some really good friends. So far the movies have not followed the plot and are not nearly as good as the books. If you saw the movie you probably still want to read the book!

This is the fourth book in the Love Comes Softly series. I ordered the first three in the series on a hunch that they would be good since they have been made into movies. I ordered these for my 15 year old daughter to read through the summer. I also ordered the DVDs. My daughter is not an avid reader so I had to twist her arm a bit to read these. I am glad they were interesting to her and had good life lessons in them. I would have her read aloud to me and we would discuss what was happening in the story. This was also her first time to see that the book and the movie is often very different. We are still readig the series.

I was first introduced to Jeanette Okes' stories on Moody Bibles 'Stories From the Bookshelf' series, a radio dramatization. Having listened to the episodes and gotten caught up in the stories, I was excited when I learned that they had made the movies. I felt both of the first two stayed fairly true to the stories, but for some reason its' hard to fathom, 'Loves' Abiding Joy' is a departure, an entertaining story, but not the one the book tells by that title. It leaves it open for them to still tell this story but..what would they call that movie?
"Marty and Clarke Go west?"
Neverthe less It is all well written and the movies are well done. The other stories on the Moody Radio series are great as well.

It had been a while since I read a book, so I decided to try reading Love's Abiding Joy since I had already read the first three books in the series. Well, I'm on chapter eight, and may decide to go ahead and finish it, but it's not been as good as I hoped. It begins with the author assuring the reader that Marty still feels as young at fourty-two as she did at thirty -- and Clark is still cute with grey hair. Trust Hollywood and a shallow American mind to make us concerned that the people we read about be young and good looking. It would seem to me that people back then would age sooner due to hard lives; but if they are interesting characters, who cares? Most of what I've read so far has to do with the outward. Marty's dresses. Marty's hat. What Marty eats. Marty staying neat and tidy . . . Not that I am uninterested in the way people lived in that time period, but in a Christian book -- or even a good secular book -- I do not find a character who is mostly concerned with outward things to be very inspiring.

I took a very close look at this book while undergoing testing to determine if my high PSA reading at my last physical was due to cancer or not. While I find the author's other book "Dr. Patrick Walsh's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer" which is in it's second edition among the best books out there I noted that some of the material in this book is getting dated and for somone to use this book as their primary source of information on the subject of prostate disorders would be denying themselves of a lot of information vital to making a wise decision. If a new revised edition of this book were to be relased I have no doubt that it could be a very good reference. If you are looking for up to date information to help guide you through some possibly difficult decisions save your money and look at other titles.

This book was refered to me when I was told that I told that I had Prostate cancer by a doctor. The doctor informed me that most men do not understand what the prostate does and how it operates. I read the book and achieved a better understanding of what I was facing. My wife did not read the entire book but did read certain parts and used this to support me in this time. I would recommend that every man over 50 beg, borrow or buy this book, read it, study it and visit with their doctor and get a yearly check up. I am a five year survial of Prostate cancer and every 6 months when the doctor tells me that it is still in remission I rejoice.

Walsh's collection of columns and the smattering of recipes is a quick and easy read that takes us around the world (sort of) and introduces some interesting (and some not so) food items and histories.

While some of the pieces feel dated (because they are) and the reader can distinctly feel that they are newspaper/magazine articles without the pictures (as they also are), I still found the book enjoyable and interesting. It's a book you can start and stop as you like, with enough anecdotes to impress your foodie friends--like which peppers are the hottest and where the best coffee comes from. Of course, it's all subjective.

The recipes are interesting, if not the most useful I've ever seen. Definitely don't base your buying decision on that inclusion.

I'll put it this way: after reading this book, if I see Robb Walsh in a magazine, I'll be sure to read the article.

wide array of "gourmet" foods

Review Date: 2005-12-19
Walsh is an excellent writer, he can make your mouth water when he reviews cuisine in his magazine and newspaper articles. I thought this book was just a glimpse at some of his best writing, boy was I mistaken. Walsh has compiled articles composed of peculiar and obscure cuisine, and the travels he had to take getting there. Included in this collection are brains from Vietnam, cactus paddle margaritas, Thai Stinkfruit, Chilean picorrocco, and deep fried everything. But to give this book justice there are many selections of true wonderful (typical?) cuisine such as the blue crabs, Trinidadian curry, and the wonderful Creole food. My favorite selections are his search for true Jamaican coffee and Dinner at Darrington which portrays southern cooking at a prison.
The book is laid out in 5-6 page articles and profiles different ethnicities, countries, and esoteric cuisine. This book is great for a gourmand, foodie, but also for those who like learning about culture and people. Walsh highlights not only the foods but the cultivating, cooking, and traditions of this foods. For example stinkfruit is a delicacy to the Thai, sauerkraut to Austrians, spam to Hawaiins, and knishes to the Jewish yet these are probably not mainstays in your kitchen and probably not appealing to your senses.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in different foods and likes culinary writing. Walsh is a true culinary thrill seeker and it is definately exciting to read this collection.

The other reviews describe the book's contents well. The stories are entertaining and educational, but Walsh's writing style struck me as not-quite-ready-for-prime-time. Many stories ended abruptly (perhaps a lousy editing job?) and the prose seemed like something out of a college-level creative writing class.
I like Jeffrey Steingarten's books better...a matter of personal taste.
Still, I give this 3 stars because the stories are excellent-- it's the storytelling that needs work.

After reading the many positive reviews (both Amazon and other sources) of this book, I was excited to begin my reading. However, both the prose and much of the subject matter left me cold.

Mr. Walsh often appears to be trying too hard to "grab" the reader with subject matter that is both arcane and uninteresting.

Those interested in fine culinary writing would be better served by authors like Alan Richman (GQ food writer), Jeffrey Steingarten (Vogue), or James Villas (Town & Country).

The interviews with well-known bloggers are an outstanding feature of the book - they are insightful and very useful - they'll help you understand what you're committing to, how to run a successful blog, and what you can expect to get out of it. Also, Walsh gives the best advice I've seen for advertising your blog via Technorati, Feedburner, et al., and for using social networks to promote your message. (+) engaging writing style
(+) accessible as a book you could give to a co-worker, or even less-technical family member
(+) gets reader excited about blogging

However, it has the following problems:

(-) some material highly subject to aging (e.g., blogger how-to steps could have been omitted)
(-) promotion of some obnoxious tools (e.g., White Smoke grammar helper, user-unfriendly Microsoft Live Spaces)
(-) very little mention of WordPress (you wouldn't realize its popularity by reading this book)
(-) not enough emphasis on blog *reading* (Google Reader got one sentence, but its features and best practices could been expanded to a whole chapter). Optimizing your reading habits/patterns is a critical skill for surviving blog-bombardment
(-) no mention of the role of pinging (and necessity by some services)
(-) too many interviews (police wives and military perspectives didn't add anything for me)
(-) a number of grammar and spelling mistakes
(-) audience target may have been too broad (I would expect Apress to have had a better techie focus)

Overall, I thought the book could have been half the length and still had the same impact. But as a new blogger I got quite a bit out of the book, and I still recommend it to anyone who is not already a pro. Just be prepared to do a lot of skimming, and try to get a library/used copy that has important points highlighted.

Good Primer For Business

To put it succinctly, Clear Blogging is the kind of book I would give to a boss or manager to educate them about what blogging is, can be, and a hint of technicalities on the back end. While a good book and a great overview of what is entailed with blogging, there are not enough nitty-gritty details to satisfy someone who is of a technical nature or someone who has been blogging for a while.

However, for someone who needs to know what this blogging thing is about and how they might be able to use it for their business, either directory or indirectly, this is the perfect place to start. I would estimate that at least half of the book is made up of interviews with either bloggers, people who run blogging companies, or marketing type folk. These interviews, though they get a little long and predictable after a while, lend real life examples to the lessons being taught.

Additionally, there is sufficient attention given to topics such as podcasting, monetization, and social networking to give you a good start on finding out more about these areas.

All in all, for any body wondering where to get started, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Clear Blogging. And if you are already in to blogging, I will bet this book can still teach you a few things.

I totally love this book

I've been blogging in a ho hum way for over a year - but this book has opened up blogging for me in a whole new way.
I would recommend this as an intro... middle and advanced book. It has tons of stuff for every level. Of course I'm at the beginning level so maybe I'm not the perfect judge but I can say it has enough stuff for me to follow up with for at least a year!
What I really like are the interviews, the links and the detailed information (step by step) to do or check things out. And... besides the book I'm getting just as addicted to his web site... http://clearblogging.com

The one book you should read about blogging

If you are going to recommend just one book to someone who wants to get started reading, following and creating a blog, this is the book. Author Bob Walsh goes far beyond the usual treatment of the topic and gives you tons of practical tips, suggestions and information about resources. I've been blogging for over a year and I learned a ton from Bob's book. Don't waste your time with other books, go right to source and read this one. I highly recommend it.

I ordered this for my daughter that's 13. It was a great way to give her something to play on her flute and at the same time to teach her a little about her heritage. It's a great collection.

Fun music to play but disappointed with the CD

I really enjoy playing this music and I think if I can find someone to play with me, this could be a lot of fun. The CD is nice to listen too and does give a good idea of how the songs go, however I wish it had an option to play with alone with the guitar as accompiment rather than only having the option to play along with Ms. Walsh on the CD. I have other books which have a piano accompiment on CD and those are a lot more fun to play along with because it is a solo. I thought I was purchasing something along that lines and was disapointed when it turned out otherwise. Really a shame because I would have bought a lot more of Ms. Walsh's arrangements if only there was an an accompiment only option on the CD because I really like the music.

Very nice

I'm a player of 10 years, and this was my first time playing Irish/Celtic music. The song selections are great and the accompanying CD brings them to life. I found the notation a little bland, but I added my own ornaments here and there and it sounded very nice. There are several songs on the CD that don't have any accompaniment (guitar), and that was a little bit of a bummer.

I definitely recommend!

As far as the music goes...5 stars.
The cd is the only reason I gave this review 4 stars.
There isn't any lead-in time when songs play on the cd, so it is difficult to play along with Ms. Walsh in the first bar.
But that really doesn't take away from how much I am enjoying this book/audio cd.

Title says it all - this book is full of songs that are fun and easy to play and they sound great - especially if you can find a guitar player, and maybe even a drummer for the full celtic music experience.
Most of the songs lay out a traditional theme followed by one or more variations added by the author. Based on celtic music performances I've heard, this - theme & variations - seems to be the traditional way of performing these songs.
The accompanying CD has better sound and performance quality than one often gets in this kind of thing.
The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is just a minor nitpick - I'd like to see at least a few songs scored for duets or trios with some instrumental variations, for example parts for guitar or alto flute (in G).

This book is a great book for both girls that have a foundation in God and girls that don't even know who he is. The book gives you an age appropriate taste of the Bible in a inviting way to turn young ones to learn that God is for them and not against them.

My seven year old daughter was so excited about this book that she had to buy one for each of her BFF's. She was so proud when she presented the books to each of her best friends, pointing out that there are fun activities in the book that you can do.

Perfect for my Princesses!

Santa Claus bought this to my 7 year old little girl last Christmas. She loves it when we do devotions now. She can read it herself and always picks out just the "one" that it feels like God lead her to. My whole family join in and we have thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love the fact that it includes songs in it. My 10 year old son said that he felt God in a mighty way one night when we sang one of the songs out of this book. It's a must have!

Great for the littlest princesses

I am the mother of three little girls; 5, 3, and 1; and almost every night before bed we read this book. It is set up in 4 page sections that first take a passage and break it down into simple language that relates to little girls. Then there is a section of the reading that relates it to the little girls life, sometimes there is a song or a play you can act out with your little princess. My little girls look forward to reading it every evening. And I can see their growth in understanding God.

Disappointed...

I really thought this might have more interactive stories or at least a question and answer part. The stories are short but sometimes I don't feel like they are even written for a child. They use actual Bible verses which is great but the stories afterward to coorelate with the Bible are sometimes lacking. Would not recommend for 4 year old as books says, maybe 6-7 year old?

I loved this book! After reading the Prairie Legacy series and realizing that the Damaris that shows up there is the one and the same, I just couldn't rest until I got this book and got her "back story". Well, I was not disappointed. Yet another triumph for Mrs. Oke!

If you like Christian Romance novels, you will probably like this book. I actually didn't want to like this book, but as I read it, I just couldn't help myself. It was both enjoyable and interesting. As a teenager Damaris escapes an abusive alcoholic father and travels west with a wagon train. After an exhausting trip, she finally is able to settle in a small town. She finds several part time jobs and even a couple of good friends.

After she establishes a routine in her new life, the romance aspect of the novel is introduced. I found it to be a bit boring and predictable, but I don't think that the romance is supposed to be the main focus. I think Damaris' struggle to overcome her abusive past is the main focus, with the Bible playing a pivotal role in both the novel and Damaris' struggle to overcome. Towards the end of the novel, the story manages to focus on Christ and forgiveness without being, for the most part, too preachy. Overall, this novel is a quick, easy read which won't disappoint readers fond of this genre.

"A Woman Named Damaris" did not have a solid plot, and was redundant. It's a decent read, but most of the pages were full of fluff and fillers. I have no idea what it's like, but Damaris' constant thinking that men are drunks started to get to me and at times made me angry. Predictable, as all of Oke's books are, and her endings come so quickly and without elaboration. I "sorta" recommend.
