This is a must read for anyone interested in the future of this planet. If you are concerned about nuclear proliferation or global warming this title was way ahead of it's time. Roger Walsh M.D. is known as one of the foremost thinkers in transpersonal psychology; yet, if you are interested in ecopsychology this book is an early milestone in the paradigm shift we must all embrace. This book needs to be republished in a new edition.

documentary in value:essays of a young innovator

Review Date: 2000-05-04
While riding on the Paris Metro in the early Forties, during the War, a young Frenchmen had turned to his mentor and exclaimed that culture was at an end point , who will reorganize music, "You will,Pierre", said Messiaen. This collections of essays has now fascinating documentary value, for Boulez has moved on we all know, to larger realms in both universes of conducting and composition, and unpretenciously has kept the vision Messiaen had of his young student. Yet Boulez's aesthetic has not undergone a metamorphosis that is unrelated not totally unrecognizable from his youth. And all these essays are reflections and position papers, analyses, technical points like Sprechgesang and encyclopedic like entries. All were a means toward a comprehension of the situation in music at the end of the Second World War.The analytical essay "Stravinsky remains" is perhaps the most valuable item here . This is a dissection of his Rite of Spring, how the rhythm works like cells being placed together into mosaic-like patterns, creating textures, but truncating the rhythmic identities. "To the farthest reach of the fertile country" is an essay here inspired by a quote from Paul Klee, who has remained an enduring inspiration to Boulez to this day. This essay is on the implications of electronic composition, which in the early Fifties represented a new universe of sound and its conception. It was also dangerous, for how will it enter the realm of culture and creativity, how will electronics interface with the expressive concerns of form and content, and sonic manipulation. Recall that Boulez in his youth was a fiery activist for the cause of serial composition. Anyone who didn't follw this cause was useless and unimportant. He, for instance called for all opera houses to be burned to the ground, and loathed the likes of Verdi or Puccini exclaiming the vulgarity of their music. He also led jeering sections at concerts. But all this soon, to use his words, stopped,Boulez stopped barking like a dog outside. The infamous and misunderstood article "Schoenberg is Dead" is included here. Boulez never meant this title in a derogatory way, simply a ubiquitous use of the French phrase, the "king is dead", referring to the French Revolution. All Boulez meant was indeed modest, that Schoenberg's conception of the dodecaphonic language simply didn't extend itself into all the parameters of music. This is true of form in particular, where Schoenberg had retrogressed utilizing Baroque forms situated within atonal means. All of the grande auteurs that Boulez later conducted for the next thirty years are discussed in essay form: Alban Berg, Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, Stravinsky and Schoenberg. There is also an essay on "Alea", the indeterminate aleatoric idea which fascinated Boulez at this time the Fifties, and triggered his lifelong interest in Mallarme. His Third Piano Sonata was the focus of this concept of introducing performative freedoms into a work, much like encountering the mobiles of Alexander Calder, where fixed shapes rotates and interrelate in forever newer configurations. Here Boulez gives indications why he intends to embark on this creative excursion citing points in history without introducing much technical detail. The original of the work entitled "Notes of an Apprenticeship" was published by Alfred A Knopf in 1968 and has been unavailable.

The photography displays the stonework in a way that makes you envy the occupants of every structure. If the homes are half as much joy to occupy as they are to look at, the author is a genius.

A Must Read for Every Family Therapists/Counselors
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-09
Traditional family systems theory which contributes to the development of various family therapy schools is largely derived from clinical observations of families with psychitric patients. Many family researchers were eagerly looking for what causes individual pathology within families. They ignored the bright sides. Even when facing major crisis, each family has its own strengths to help itself go back on track. Sometimes that resilient power may make the family become even healthier and stronger than before. Dr. Froma Walsh outlines the qualities that help families sustain the storming weather, and suggest a new approach of clinical practice. The book has three parts. Part I is an overview providing theoretical foundations for this approach. It also dicusses the family diversity issues in this changing society. Part II contains four chapters. First three chapters address the three key family processes in resilience, which are Belief Systems, Organizational Processes, and Communication Processes. The remaining chapter offers an integrative framework for family assessment. Part III explores family resilience through crisis and challenge. Death and loss and chronic illness are chosen for illustrating how family develops resilience through adversity or traumatic experiences. The author then dicusses how to treat vulnerable multi-crisis families through strength-based and family-centered services. The book closes with the chapter on reconnection and reconciliation. Combining with family-of-origin work and forgiveness promotion, the author offers ways to "mend the broken hearts." I found this book easy to read, and the organization is very clear. It is a excellent basic text for understanding fundamantal family system dynamics. Is is also very useful for counselors and therapists to alter the views to emphasize more on the strengths of individuals and families, rather than on the deficits and weakness.

Strengthening Family Resilience especially focuses upon the quality of being able to withstand and rebound from a crisis or persistent challenges, the key difference between families shattered by tragedy and trauma while other families survive and even grow stronger in the wake of adversity. A scholarly text of especial value to professionals and students in the field of counseling and therapy, Strengthening Family Resilience covers the key processes in resilience such as belief systems, organizational patterns, and communication processes, as well as means to facilitate the cultivation of resilience in times of greatest need, forming connections in times of dire conflict, and much more. Tales from the War is a book of short stories with similarities to the Lord of the Rings. I have already read the book three times. The stories take place in Verdania and take you on adventures through battles between good and evil for the crown of the kingdom. I thought it was very descriptive and had great battle scenes. I really liked the different characters that fought on the good side with queen Emerald.

One of my favorite characters was the Red Rose who struggles through evil desires of the flesh and what is good. He is the son of an Immortal and possesses great powers but tries to use them for good. His companion Airryer is a half-breed of Elf and Bythnay. He carries a crossbow with arrows and some mystical bolts made by fairies. The Red Rose and Airryer fight against ghost men, bounty hunters, and Agents Of The Black Sun.

The Butcher brothers, Amos & Grumly, are two mongrel warriors who are the Queen's hand picked royal guardians. They wield swords and axes and are a great help when needed in battle.

The Company Of Fools is a great group led by a man who is locally known as the Fool. He and his group of different species go through all kinds of battles with Spiders, guards of the Dark Duke, and other evils.

I really think this is a great book and I'm looking forward to future books from this author.

I finally found a book for empowering the inner environmentalist at an early age. What's most impressive about this book are the bold and creative illustrations and graphic design.

The message is simply put -- what can kids do to help the environment. From remembering to turn off a light to turning off tap water, planting and recycling, all the tips are easy for the young reader to absorb.

It also makes a great book to buy, read to children and re-gift either for a birthday gift to a friend or library!
