This book is unique in that it could be the basis for a class in microeconomics. The topic is "fun" and the writing is understandable. Every outdoor recreationist should read this book.

Sometimes minor poets write masterpieces...

I thought of this book today when I heard a great photographer talk about how he didnt realize when he was young that the subject for great art was what was right in front of you and that you knew best. 30 years ago, I spent 6 months reading and re-reading this book as one of the core demonstrations of my thesis that Irish poets only started to write great poems when they moved off the broad, universal themes (eg, love, death, war) and wrote about what they knew best and thought most passionately about - their country. Montague is no-one's idea of a household name (forgotten in the celebration of his contemporary, Seamus Heany) but this is as good a book of poetry as has been written by an Irishman after WWII. Treat yourself and find a copy.

I loved this book as a child and have been hoping to buy it again. It is a very cute story about one of Santa's reindeer who, while travelling on Christmas Eve, sees a small teddy bear he wants in Santa's bag of toys.

I am thrilled with everything Allan Alexander does, and this book is no exception. The selections in this book are wonderful. Normally, I shy away from original compositions, but have abandoned that habit since encountering the great pieces by Allan Alexander and Jessica Walsh. There are some great "classic" renaissance tunes in this book including Kemp's Jig, Dance of the Washerwoman, The Troubadour Song, and Blind Mary. However, the original compositions are just as wonderful with my personal favorites being A Winter's Ronde and A Child's Ronde. The duets have remarkable balance between the two instruments. There is a lot of interplay and neither the flute nor the guitar dominates. Rather, there is a perfect balance. I am an intermediate to lower advanced classical guitarist, and I cannot STAND it when the guitar has some boring accompaniment while the flute gets the melody. This is definitely not the case here. Both flautist and guitarist will be very pleased with these arrangements. They are beautiful and many are well-suited for gigs, plyaing in church, weddings, etc.

An Excellent History

Review Date: 2006-10-30
Conceding the very narrow focus of this book, I will say that it's an excellent history not only of the Southern Indiana, but of all the railroads in southern Indiana around the turn of the century.

This book is culled completely from newspaper articles published throughout Indiana, which the author has collected and presented in chronological order. There's no editorial, no gushing nostalgia ... just the record of the events as they were reported in the statewide press. This is exactly the kind of material I've spent hours researching in local libraries and museums, and having it collected from so many sources in one volume is a joy to read.

If you're interested in the railroad or industrial history of southern Indiana, this is a wonderful resource.

A source of inspiration and advice for all women

Review Date: 1999-07-15
Recently I reread Julia Walsh's book, and found it even more exciting than the first time. Her ability to focus on what is important in life, and to overcome whatever falls her way is something for all of us to emulate. Her energy, competence and desire to share her knowledge with others shows through on every page.

Julia entered the brokerage business at a time when it was closed to women. She focused on her goals and was accepted for her knowledge and expertise. She did not try to become one of the "men."

In the last chapter Julia offers advice and encouragement to any woman desiring a successful career combined with a strong family life.

Robert Cole's World is a great book. Covering the history of Robert Cole and his family from England to their immigration to Lord Baltimore's Colony of Maryland, the book is a must for anyone interested in early American history. Background on the Cole family, 17th century tobacco cultivation, and daily life in 17th century Maryland are all incorporated into this interesting and nicely written book. Included are copies of the Cole family's inventory, as well as Robert Cole's will. For anyone interested in colonial American history and what life was like before American slavery took hold, Robert Cole's world is for you.

The book is well organized, with experiments and explanations that are simple enough to work with one or thirty kids (I teach 5th grade).

This is a great, fun suppliment to any curriculum you may already have.
