I was so impressed to see what God did in this mans life. I have never heard of anyone being healed of Schizophrenia. Those
dealing with mental illness seem to be such forgotten people. But through the pages of this book, I see that God is not limited;
He can heal anything and anyone.

My students LOVE this lab manual. The consider it their "cliff notes" for the lecture and have used it from cover to cover!
One short-fall...An index would be a welcomed addition & save the students & instructor endless hunting in regard to specific
organisms or media & biochemical tests.

I really enjoyed reading this. With Juliet Bredon's writing style, the reader is taken through the streets of old Beijing
- back in time. She describes the street life, the festivals, the temples, and the changes going on even back then. Anyone
interested in Beijing or China will enjoy reading this classic! Amazing pictures too!

This book has great pictures and is very informative in an easy to read format. I am very Christian but in no way were we
offended in the way it discussed the gods of Egypt. They believed in gods and they are taught as part of history.

Quoting from the backcover of my edition
"In this book, his major work, Alfred Schutz attempts to provide a sound philosophical bases for the sociological theories of Max Weber [...] Using Husserlian phenomenology, Schutz provide a complete and original analysis of human action and its "intended meaning". [..] In the process he offers a possible answer to a fundamental question - whether the social sciences can provide genuine understanding of human beings"
After having read it I can only agree with the above. In my opinion this is a masterpiece of social philosophy. The questions which this book touches upon are the ones always lurking in the back of every social scientist, namely the epistemological status of the science as such. The great thing about this book is that it, unlike any other I have read, manages to pinpoint this questions and sketch a possible answer to most of them.
The book is, as the quote points out, based upon the phenomenology of Hussrl. Now, this might scare away many people familiar with the writings of Hussrl or Heidegger, but no need to worry.
Upon its release in 1932 Schutz sent a dedicated copy of the book to Hussrl whom replied "I am anxious to meet such a serious and thorough phenomenologist, one of the few who have penetrated to the core of the meaning of my life's work, access to which is unfortunately so difficult .."
This then is exactly what Schutz have managed, namely to produce an easy access/introduction to the profound thoughts of Hussrl.
This book is written with great rigour, but without ever loosing clarity or direction. It reads easy for anyone customed to reading philosophical essays. The translation from german I think was very well done.
The book will, for sure, require some intellectual effort from its reader, but when thinking about the great complex questions it manages to solve, this effort seem small in comparison.
If I were a teacher of social sciences, I would make this mandatory reading at the higher levels.

major reference for art historians, curators, collectors...

The authors' note right at the start of this encyclopedic work for art historians, conservators, and forensic specialists
cites historic complaints that the names artists have recorded for the pigments they used in their paintings, frescoes, etc.,
are notoriously unreliable. Hence, the hundreds of cross-references to help researchers get to the pigment an artist used
in a work despite what he or she may have called it. The reference also works from the standpoint of wishing to confirm a
particular pigment by describing in detail its physical and chemical properties. This incomparable art reference for determining
important matters of works of art goes beyond such scientific information to include as well historical notes on many of the
pigments. The entry "Burnt Ochre" is an example of most of the thousands of entries: It begins with the general comment that
the "phenomena that yellow ochre when heated converts to red ochre" has been known since pre-historic times. This is followed
by a note that the fourth-century B. C. philosopher Theophrastus wrote a detailed description of the process of "producing
burnt ochres." Then comes the physical and chemical information--"The process in action is the thermal transformation of goethite...to
iron(III) oxide, whereby the goethite begins to dehydrate...," and so on for about 20 more lines. (The chemical equations
in the quote are omitted in this review.) After this comes a few short paragraphs on comments later writers have made on burnt
ochre, with the entry ending with remarks on the term for this pigment and related terms. The "Pigment Compendium" is an exhaustive,
reliable guide to resolving important matters about works of art using pigments--matters which may involve accurate dating,
and in some cases also involve large sums of money for museums or private collectors. Every museum, art library, and serious
art collector should have a copy.

VERY simple story about a salamandar who seeks magic that can conquer his fear of the dark -- but eventually finds the magic
was within him.
This book is mostly pictures, very little text. Easy to read to little people. Those who are very fearful will find a champion to admire in Pip. Helps children learn that the world is much more than a big scary place... there's magic, too.
