I bought this book as a student nurse during the late 80's; our tutors recommended it to us in order to encourage us to become innovative practitioners. The book made us question the 'rituals' that had become everyday practice in nursing, such as 'observation rounds', 'backs rounds', etc. It encouraged staff to look at their nursing practice from a more holistic and individualistic viewpoint rather than a task orientated stance.
These days nursing has moved on tremendously and individual care is much more the 'norm' now. However there are still some areas that are ritualistic and not evidence based. That is why this book is still valid and useful. It makes you evaluate your practice and question whether you are giving the best care possible. It is written in a style that is easy to read and not at all stuffy, recommended for anyone in the nursing profession.

This book is outstanding. It provides the reader, or viewer, with the opportunity to enjoy and study many of O'Keeffe's works, in watercolor, pastels, and charcoal drawings. I was very satisfied with my choice. I searched and searched for a book that contained works other than her standard oils and watercolors, that have been so available in other books for years. As an art student, this one fits the bill as a great book to study one of my favorite artists and her varied use of techniques and mediums. Who else could make an avocado look so asthetically wonderful. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the work of Georgia O'Keeffe. You won't be disappointed.

This story is set in the current time and examines the professional and personal lives of a group of teachers. Written by a former teacher, it gives a glimpse into the hardships and happiness they experience. But this is not some slow pokey story. You have a woman fleeing from an obsessive abusive husband, another struggling to understand her promisquous behavior, a kleptomaniac, and another being lured away from her husband and son and thats still not all thats going on. The best thing about this book is the strength of the women dealing with their problems. I never felt the need to scream at any of the characters and say "Wake up and get a grip!" The ending was pleasantly satisfying and reflects this day and age and the realization that you just never know who knows who and justice, even if applied in a less than ethical manner, is still very satisfying. It was a very complete story and the actions of the kleptomaniac gave me some serious thoughts on a risk I had never ever considered - but I won't spoil it for you. Grab a copy, its great for book clubs because it reads fast and opens many avenues of discussion.

Top-notch advice from a master of philosophical prose style
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-19
Brand Blanshard's prose style was itself a seamless implementation of the content of his philosophy: intelligible, clear, precise, and invariably suffused by what he called the "rational temper." In this book (really an extended essay) he offers helpful advice to would-be writers of philosophical prose -- advice that he had more than earned the right to give.

This single volume, if its advice were heeded, would have spared us the dark cogitations of many an obfuscatory philosopher and left the field of philosophy in the hands of those who had something to say. Those who are impressed by the bold pronouncements of Nietzsche, Kierkegaard and Wittgenstein will find little solace here, but anyone who expects philosophers actually to love wisdom will be delighted to encounter a kindred spirit. Read it not only to profit from its advice on prose style but also to absorb something of the spirit of twentieth century philosophy's greatest exemplar of reasonableness.

This is one of my favorite books! Well written - an adventure! Walsh is a gifted author. The invention of the aeroplane is an incredible story of one of the most important technologies of the 20th century. Unfortunately there is much misunderstanding about how it came to be. This book is based on new information that became available around 1970. You won't be disappointed.

The title is a bit misleading. It covers the Wright's work from it's beginnings up to 1909.

Indispensible Reference Work
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-30
This is my favorite opera guide and general reference. It contains brief biographies of the composers, detailed but not overly long synopsis of the plot, given act by act, a brief overview of the performance history, a critical appraisal of the opera itself, and a very thoughtful discography demonstrating excellent musical taste. The work is presented alphabetically by composer, and chronologically by work for each composer. The writing style is clear, advanced but not pedantic, and should be accessible to beginners as well as to opera buffs. As if this weren't enough, there are historic photographs of key performances throughout the years.

The vision of opera is open-minded and broad. Porgy and Bess is here. So is Gilbert and Sullivan. When an opera exists in different manuscript versions, such as Verdi's Don Carlo or Simon Boccanegra, all variations are discussed.

Since opera is somewhat expensive to collect, listeners will want to have some guidance as to which recordings to purchase. Here the Viking Guide is particularly good. Many of the suggested recordings are selected by Alan Blyth, author of Opera on Record and Opera on CD (both very highly recommended, by the way), as well as long time reviewer for Gramophone magazine. I don't always rank recordings exactly as Blyth does, but I find his taste to be the most reliable of any of the critics whom I follow.

This volume was originally published in 1993, but is now very hard to find. The publishers have printed an abridged version under the Penguin Guide series. I understand they are also coming out with a CD-ROM version of the full Viking Guide. I can safely recommend both these alternative versions as well as my trusty hardcover version.

There are other valuable opera guides. The series published by Norton of the Metropolitan Opera Guide to Recorded Opera and to Opera Plots is excellent. But for a single volume reference work, nothing surpasses the Viking Guide. Amanda Holden and her team have done a splendid job.

Very highly recommended.

This is a must book for the new collector of Chinese antiques or collectibles. It gives you meanings of different symbols and representations that are essential to identifying a figurine, statue, creature or god that you may encounter.
