BRIEFLY THE BEST EXPRESSION OF OUR CHURCH UP TO THE EIGHTIESReview Date: 2006-11-21
The prefatory poem by Father Ernesto Cardenal is especially revelatory of the violent oppression of the poor in those days and places, an oppression which continues now in Fallujah and New Orleans and so many places around the globe at the ends of wealthy arms-owners. Read this book for courage, consolation, comfort, hope and peace. And at this price you cannot afford NOT to have this book. There are no more excuses left.

A Beautiful Retelling of the Classic Fairy TaleReview Date: 1997-09-18
Why then retell something so beautifully told? If
you are a writer/illustrator like Joan Walsh Anglund, the answer is
easy: because you wish to create a thing of beauty and magic.
Anglund is best known for her little books and magazine
pieces that feature wide-faced children with
button noses and
dark eyes. This book is a de-
parture from her usual style of illustration
in that she also creates adults: a father,
stepmother, and the wicked old witch. The
surrounding woodlands are reminiscent of
the Bavarian Black Forest
and her gingerbread
house is delectable. It will send you out looking for a sugar fix.
Children will love this book because it is beautiful,
interesting and well-told. Parents will enjoy
the positive
portrayal of a loving, caring
father and two very brave children. Though
currently out of print, it may well be
available
in your local library, if not
in tatters (as my copy is) from years of loving use. Enjoy!

Glad I came back (Review for Volumes 8, 9 and 10)Review Date: 2007-09-25
Right around vol 6, I suddenly lost interest. The jokes and behaviors of the characters were one note and not particularly pleasing.
Recently, I was speaking with a lady at a bookstore who was picking up Naruto for her children but I saw that she also had Nodame in her hands and I asked, "who are they for?" and she said, "Oh, this one is mine." We talked a bit about what we thought of it and she said, "You really should start up again. Vol 7 might try your patience, but vol 8 was so good."
On her recommendation, I started up again at Volume 8 where subtle changes start to take place with Chiaki and Nodame that force both of them to start growing a little more. To be sure, Chiaki is still overbearing and arrogant and Nodame remains a loopy genius, but he starts to seem more humane and she starts to seem more human.
One arc (the one I call the "Japan arc") concludes satisfyingly in Volume 9 (Nodame's family are a hoot) and the new arc starts off in Volume 10 on the perfect footing that truly highlights just how much has changed between the two main characters.
So it is good to be back. The humor that first drew me to Nodame Cantabile is still present, but the characters have become more likable and more developed and that makes my journey with them so much more enjoyable.
