Fun Games with Math
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-19
As a new homeschooler mother, I have combed the libraries for helpful books on math to teach and entertain. This book stands out from all the others in its organization and creativity. it is divided into "home" activities and "outdoors" activities for two age groups: 4-8 year olds and 7-11 year olds. There is minimal need for supplies (dominoes, dice, straws, string, paper, playing cards) and the main requirement is your mind. Many of the games can be played in the car; this has been our best use of the book. The most fun part of the new homeschooling year so far has been rolling four dice each and adding up the numbers. Variations on that theme were to roll and find how you could make a sum of 10 or 11 or 12. The book's games can be played as they are described or used as a jumping board to other variations. The games are challenging to adults and children and spark the imagination as to how numbers fit together and further conversation on "what if" questions.

My best recommendation is that after reading every game and tabbing over half the pages to mark the games I wanted to use, I am ordering the book for long-term use.

Enjoy!

An excellent read for the true Notre Dame fan. This book is loaded with unique and insightful material, unlike any other publication I have seen about the Fightin' Irish. The interview article with Ara Parseghian was absolutely fascinating.

I purchased this book for a friend's 3 year old. I was a little worried it was too simple for her. Her parents read to her a lot. My friend called me all excited because her daughter just "read" it to another little kid. It's one of her daughter's favorites. The pages are thicker than normal pages but not board pages so there easy for her to turn.

Great book. As a salesperson, entrepreneur, and the author of the book "Business-to-Business Prospecting: Innovative Techniques to Get Your Foot in the Door with Any Prospect", I found this book to be highly insightful and well thought out. The analogy of sales and professionl poker is a good one.

Dr. Walsh was my allergist from about age two through young adulthood, and even those thirty-some years ago he was considered a leader in his field.

This book is easy to read and understand, and the information it provides is practical and can be realistically implemented. If you or anyone in your home suffer from allergies (especially children!), this book is a must.

I enjoy reading first class mystery novels. I read Hope Haven and found it to be an excellent novel, on par with my favorite authors. In fact, when I started reading it I couldn't put it down. The book shows a perception of human nature that has depth and variety. I enjoyed how each chapter added new and often unexpected information about the past and personalities of the characters in the story. I highly recommend Hope Haven, truly a first class mystery novel.

An Outstanding Comprehensive Reference

I am a pediatrician, not an internist or cardiologist, so this book is not of particular interest to me professionally. However, I am of an age where the cardiovascular system presents personal health issues for me and other family members. I am very satisfied with this latest edition as an in-depth reference.

When my late father, an electrical engineer, was diagnosed with congestive heart failure about 10 years ago, he bought an earlier edition of this book and read everything relevant to his condition. His cardiologist was impressed with is knowledge and had to deal with him as a knowledgeable and engaged patient who could converse and question.

A welcome addition to philosophical discourses about the subtleties of human socialization and entertainment.

Review Date: 2007-09-01
Professor Jan Walsh Hokenson presents The Idea of Comedy: History, Theory, Critique, a scholarly and studious examination of one of the most nebulous, yet universally visceral human topics: comedy. What is comedy, and how does it truly work? Drawing upon sources from a wide variety of languages and eras, The Idea of Comedy explores a diversity of different theories of comedy. From classical renaissance takes on comedy, to the emergent populist theory of late modernist conception, to postmodern ideas of comedic theory, The Idea of Comedy appraises and compares perceptions of what constitutes true humor. "Comedy... has always been considered the artistic mode of error. Error has ranged from ludicrous blunder in Menander to cognitive dissonance in Glasgow. Generally speaking, the concept of error requires another concept of non-error (as accuracy, truth, decorum, and so on). It is not necessarily the case that the latter must be a 'standard' or a 'norm.'" A welcome addition to philosophical discourses about the subtleties of human socialization and entertainment.

From Mary Lavin we learn about modern day hubris - and we learn to avoid so many tragic faults.

My favorite stories in this collection were "In the Middle of the Fields," "A Cup of Tea," "In a Cafe," "A Story with a Pattern," "A Widow's Son," and "The Little Prince."

Thank God for Joan Walsh Anglund! Once again, she has created a work exquisite in its simplicity. It is a perfect vehicle for acquainting both children and adults with scripture. Each brief verse has a beautiful illustration to enhance the words. Mrs Anglund's children take one back to a time more innocent and--yes--more spiritual! A must!
