Soothing and beautiful passages from A Course In Miracles

Review Date: 2004-04-05
I had reservations about A GIFT OF PEACE at first because Helen Schucman, the scribe of A COURSE IN MIRACLES, had received direction that there were to be no abridgments of the Course proper. But after looking through A GIFT OF PEACE, I see perhaps in this case it is not such a bad idea. And, truth be known, this is not an abridgment. Nowhere in A GIFT OF PEACE is it suggested that this is a good replacement for the three volumes of the A COURSE IN MIRACLES. Rather, this is a presentation of the most beautiful and inspiring passages from the Course, juxtaposed with beautiful photographs of nature scenes. All of the photos are black-and-white, giving them a classic and poignant energy. Certainly not a replacement for the Course, but a book most Course students will appreciate and enjoy.

With an afterward by Chad Walsh, this is Lewis' attempt to come to terms with the loss of his wife. It is a "masterpiece of rediscovered faith" and could well be helpful to anyone who has lost a loved one to death.

The concept that the Gulf War never occured is preposterous. I was an Attlerry Scout with F/2/2 USMC and can personally vouch for the following facts: A) the conflict happened and was contested. B)There were instagators imported from less Arabic countries to punish the local citizens. My service in SouthWestAsia was one of the most fulfilling experiences in my life.

I bought this book eight years ago, and to this day as I bring out the Fall/Halloween decorations, it's the first object my children go for! Even at five & seven they want this little treasure read over & over again! A lovely little story about a lovely ,lonely cat on Halloween. My children have named real & stuffed cats after the star character! A true delight for all ages to read/or to be read to/or to read to someone. Why not make it a part of Your Family Fall Tradition?

This compact and unimposing book takes a major swipe at various assumptions in previous accounts of nursing history. Its irreverence is refreshing and the questions that it raises about nursing history (e.g. ?do nurses care??) are provocative and enlightening. ?Handling the Sick? is well worth the read.

Health of women with intellectual disabilities
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-17
Women's health in general as a special issue is a relatively new concept, but this book is a first with special attention to women with intellectual disability. This is a very timely book, because professionals have long neglected this population and training of physicians and other health professions have been inadequate.
This publication, the first in a new series by Blackwell in cooperation with the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disabilities (IASSID), is edited by Patricia Noonan Walsh. Professor of Disability studies at the National University of Ireland in Dublin and Talmar Heller, professor at the Department of Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
The book has 14 chapters by 21 international contributors in three parts: The context of health, health status and trends, and promoting health. The approach is multidisciplinary with authors from medicine, psychology, education, public health, sociology, anthropology and nursing.
This a a comprehensive book with case stories and evidence based results from international research on the health and well-being of women with intellectual disability. The dark side of history is also mentioned with the stories of forced sterilizations and sexual control in the United States in 1900-1950. The chapter on this issue is interesting with a comparision of American and Brazilian attitudes. In this book on women's health the last chapter by Mike Kerr from Cardiff is an interesting addition with the title: Men's health: The female of the species is more healthy than the male. He concludes that the health of the male with intellectual disability is poorer than women, but the reasons not as clear as in the general population.
All in all an important book for the professional working with the population of persons with intellectual disability...

Heart of the Salmon, written by Native voices
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-21
The broad purpose of this book is to examine the loss of salmon from pollution in three North American rivers: the Columbia, The Fraser, and the Yukon. The text is interspersed with native voices and supplemental materials that describe the early life of tribes, tradings, and the culture of a people who today have been victimized by the loss of a cultural and spiritual resource. The book is grounded in Medical Ecology theory and voices a deep and meaningful message from Native scientists and traditional knowledge keepers who attempt to weave a solution for this monumental problem.
