A short book in rhyme about Autumn and the changing leaves, from the green of summer all the way to the brown of coming winter. The smells of Autumn get a mention too, from pumpkin pies to the snow that's on the way, bringing to mind all the best parts of Fall.

Only one negative - apparently not wanting to mar the happy parts of the season, back-to-school doesn't rank a mention in the text, but there is a backpack in an illustration! All in all, a nice book for young kids and a pleasant introduction to the season.

Incredible insight to the life of privilege and power
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-01
"Father Struck It Rich" was written in 1936, long before it became popular to write a "tell-all" about one's famous life. This autobiography by Evalyn Walsh McLean is a refreshingly honest story of a life shaped by wealth and power near the turn of the century. She was raised in the Colorado mountains by parents who instilled a sense of responsibility and kindness in their daughter. Her life changed when her father "struck it rich" in the Ouray mountains. After moving to Washington, she became part of the inner circle of the wealthy and powerful. She led a life of extravagance and eventually married Ned McLean, heir to the Washington Post. She is well known for having acquired the Hope Diamond. Of course, she suffered great tragedy in her life with the premature deaths of her beloved brother and son and the eventual loss of her great wealth. However, she does not attribute these misfortunes to the famous stone. She gives a frank account of living amongst the rich and powerful and entertaining kings and presidents. Unfortunately, her husband was spoiled by money (mostly her's) and influence and never rose to greatness, even as a husband. She later raised her three children without the trappings of great wealth and tried to give back to society using the principles taught to her by her parents. The one thing that she clings to is her father's idea that there is no true generosity in giving money if the giver has much money. Unless you give of yourself, it costs nothing and therefore means nothing. She teaches us that "money does not bring the big things in life-friends, health, respect-it is so apt to make one soft and selfish." Love of others and peace in your soul are ingredients to happiness. The book leaves the reader wanting to know even more about the end of her life and the lives of her children. Great reading!

The must have DNA Evidence book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

If you can only buy one book about DNA evidence interpretation then get this one. The vast range of DNA topics this book covers is incredible. As well as giving the theory behind calculations it gives philosophies behind various schools of thought.

An example of the wide range of topics includes sections on Electropherogram artefacts, DNA mixture interpretations, Low Copy Number theory and DNA database validation (an excellent chapter which I found extremely interesting).

This book can also direct you a huge number of other sources, with around 800 references, and the referencing throughout the book is thorough and helpful.

The book is written in an easy conversational tone and has helpful 'boxes' throughout which work through difficult concepts. I can't think of anything I would change about this book. I just think it really is an excellent up to date, thorough account of DNA evidence interpretation.

Scientific Details Not Needed
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-18
This book on elementary metaphysics seems too short to be useful...but it turns out to be the first handbook you need to explore this subject (and, for many, the last as well).

When I first read this book, I was AMAZED...because I found it to be 100% in keeping with my own experiences, experiences I had been trying for years to convey to others. I had been able to get through to some people who didn't mind my scientific explanations and support information; but a lot of my friends just don't care about that...they are only interested in results.

This is a book about the results, and techniques to get them. If you want the science behind it, you'll need to look further; but "From Atoms to Angels" is a heck of a good introduction to by applying metaphysical principles to your life to make it work.

This is an excellent study of the subject of viticulture (grape/wine production) in ancient times. Serious Bible students will learn much about cultural and historical context of wine and it's production. I purchased this book when I studied the wedding at Cana, and it was a tremendous help. Subscribers to the "grape juice" theory simply do not understand the miracle - read the book!

What a great American story, if you are interested in life during the depresion, you will love this book. Bertha tells her story of growing up and includes tons of pictures of family members. Not only do you read about her family but you can visualize who they are. This book is worth the price and should be required reading for students on the 20's and 30's in America or at least in central california.

Coach of the Decade (the 1980's)
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-14
Bill Walsh was the brilliant, insecure coach who won immortality with the the San Francisco 49ers in the 1980's. Mr. Harris follows his career from the Bengals of Paul Brown to Stanford (and other stops in-between) to the 49ers. He perfected an air attack that became known as the West Coast Offense and drafted the players to carry it out (Joe Montana, Dwight Clark, Jerry Rice, etc). The book is heavy on football and light on his personal life which is a pity -- he was eccentric enough that his personal life merits a deeper look. Having died a year ago of leukemia, Walsh won three Super Bowls (1982, 1985, 1989) in his tenure as coach before retiring on his own terms. Mr. Harris interviewed the coach extensively before his death and got the details right.

An excellent catalog of consumer protection
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1997-12-01
The authors write that "many consumers who are ultracautious about their buying habits seem to be rather casual about their saving and borrowing practices. This carelessness can, of course, cost them far more in the long run than an occasional bad buy." This book covers all consumer issues, including money matters of borrowing and credit, describing all the protections afforded to consumers.
