Fans of books like "Surfing the Himalayas", "Snowboarding to Nirvana" by Frederick Lenz and "Powerful Mental Development" by Roger Cantu will definitely enjoy this book. It was interesting to get a female's perspective on taking the first steps on the Pathway to Liberation. Very insightful getting the inside track on what it's like being a student of an advanced spiritual teacher.

this book is really great to help on the job. i really like the plastic coating on all of the pages that makes the book really durable. even though the book is small and fits in my toolbox you can use it to say just about every thing you need to say to you're workers. it has been a big help for us!

Extremely handy little book!

This book is a "must have" if you work with Hispanic labor!!!
I am a civil engineer for a large construction company and most of our sub-contractors employ large numbers of Hispanic workers. As a supervisor, part of my job is to ensure the safety of all the workers on our job sites and to maintain OSHA compliancy. I can't tell you how much this book has helped! It's small enough to fit in your back pocket and it has a heavy lamination, so it's durable even in the rain. Every command has a phonetic pronunciation next to it, so even if you never studied Spanish (like me) you'll be able to use it immediately! I showed this book to my boss and our company is going to make these mandatory for all of our 'white hats' (supervisors).

I am reading this book for the third time since I puchased it several years ago. I grew up in the Back of the Yards from 1943 to 1957. This review will not be a sophisticated literary analysis or scholarly intrepretation or Walsh's work; simply stated, Robert Walsh wove an emotional, fictional portrayal of a slice of life in the BOTYs in the 1950s with surprising historical detail of actual events and places. BACK OF THE YARDS is a good companion piece for Upton Sinclair's THE JUNGLE. The characters in Walsh's work can be considered to be third and forth generations of those in THE JUNGLE. My objectivity may be a bit tainted because although I do not know the author, I feel as though I were his brother. My third reading has brought me to emotions of anger, excitement, saddness and other emotions and feelings difficult to describe. Walsh's BACK OF THE YARDS belongs on your library shelf next to Upton Sinclair's THE JUNGLE.

The book is a hard hitting realistic slice of life about growing up in Chicago in the 1950s. I felt as if I was there. The book is not meant for children and contains graphic adult material. It is a book that you will never forget.

The writers do an excellent job of reminding the reader of why we like sports. In this Post-Mitchell Report Era, it's nice to see examples of heros who aren't so driven by personal glory at the expense of others. Overall, a nice read.

Baseball for the Soul

I think Jack Walsh, and Marshall Cook have captured the heart and soul of Baseball's greatest players. Baseball Good Guys is a book that will inspire the reader to learn more of the Character and Integrity of these players. The statistics are there, but their ability to overcome adversity, personal problems, prejudice and more, will inform the readers of the real skills of these players.

Be forewarned, some of the pages come to life, in such a way that splinters (possibly from the bats) seem to leap into your eyes.

Good book, should be a must read for school athletes and those of us who lived during some of those years.

A "must" for kayak, canoe and day sailors who want adventure!

Review Date: 2008-04-17
I was pleasantly surprised! This book is set up for those who kayak, canoe or day sail and it is BRIMMING with information suitable for those folks. It's got tons of practical "been there/done that, wish we'd done this" sort of information.

Let me put in an aside -- I bought this a few years back and referenced it many times over. It is incredibly detailed, easy to read, and informative.

Another nice touch is that the editor has also added his notes to the book (in italics) so we get not just the author's viewpoints but expanded, added detail from another experienced individual.

This book feels like a friendly guide... like you're sitting around a campfire shooting the breeze with friends you've just met and sharing details on what works well for you, what you've tried and found not-so-great, and what you'd do differently next time. And yes, there definitely will be a next time!

I would definitely recommend purchase (it's that good) and though out-of-date (re prices of items) it's still WELL WORTH it as an informative tome. Anyone who has thought of cruising on a tight budget can actually have fun. Let this book be your guide -- I've never seen such a compilation. It's the best!

Think Voyaging On A Small Income but for folks who aren't quite that rich! When the authors take off for a weekend, a week, a month or more, they are using a canoe! Small boats can do wonderful things -- it doesn't have to cost your right arm and first born. This book will tell you how to do it, what to bring, what to leave at home, and give you a head start on cruising.

Buy it -- you won't be sorry.

FANTASTIC & VASTLY IMPROVED CAMPBELL-WALSH 9th EDITION - DETAILED REVIEW

Campbell Walsh Urology Edition 9ed 4 Volumes with Full Online Access - WEIN ISBN:1416029664 EAN:9781416029663Binding:

This will get you the hard copy 4 volumes and a CD-ROM containing ONLY references and link to abstract on pubmed. Unlike the previous edition the entire text and images of the book ARE NOT (emphasize - ARE NOT) available on CD anymore. You can access the entire text book through a computer ONLINE only after logging in. NOTE as per publisher- Purchase of this book includes a limited personal license to the online version for use exclusively by the individual who has purchased the book. This license and access to the web site operates strictly on the basis of a single user per PIN. The sharing of passwords is strictly prohibited, and any attempt to do so will invalidate the password. The license and access may not be lent, resold, or otherwise circulated.

Coming to the REVIEW OF THIS BOOK which you all want to read - "FANTASTIC" should say it in one word. Huge improvement in the presentation, contents, pictures, videos & diagrams. The layout and presentation makes this book more enjoyable and interesting to read compared to the 8th edition. The key points in boxes in most pages are good for quick review. Similarly the multicolour tables are helpful. The book is overall well updated and is relevant to early 2006 when it was written. The online edition updates this to current relevance partly and it will be interesting to see how good this new option will be as time goes by.

The NEGATIVE points are - some of the diagrams are too gaudy and oversimplified and therefore practically not good (more like primary school diagrams). Some of the surgical photographs are of poor standard have blood in the field glaring and you can hardly see the anatomy they are pointing to. They need to weed out such photographs & diagrams drastically in the next edition.

Coming to the ONLINE ACCESS of the text book [...]The text search option is miles better than the previous edition and brings out the relevant ones and there is an indicator showing the relevance to your keyword search. It also brings up the image library with relevant images at the same time with rating of relevance to the topic searched which is significant improvement.
There is a scrapbook in your online account which stores all saved searches, bookmarks and your notes. Select multiple images into the "lightboxes" and download the images at the end of your browsing.
You can print the pages you want in a printer friendly format. You can send pages you want to your PDA for browsing as needed.

Overall opinion - 4.5 out of 5 stars. All urology residents and consultant should have this, preferably with the online access "E-dition" option (will cost an additional Euro 100 approx compared to option 2- see below).

OTHER AVAILABLE OPTIONS -
Campbells Urology 9ed 4 Volume Book with CDRom Video Clips - WEIN ISBN:0721607985 EAN:9780721607986 . Details same as above but WITHOUT access to online 4 volume text and updates . CD Rom has diagrams, photographs and references with links only.

THIRD OPTION:
Campbell-Walsh Urology Online, 9th Edition (like a ebook which you can access 4 volumes of text with updates online only) - you are excluding the hard cover book option. ISBN: 978-1-4160-2968-7.

So remember Campbell Walsh Urology Edition 9ed 4 Volumes is available in 3 TYPES/ OPTIONS !!

Happy reading & Enlightment

e-edition very useful

Review Date: 2008-03-10
Having pretty much read every edition since the Fourth from cover to cover, I have to say the reorganization of the Ninth edition is much more logical. When using the actual text, I would invariably pull out the wrong volume when I wanted to look something up. That is now a moot point with a well-done e-edition. The boxed "key points" are useful during review. The multicolor tables and charts are easier to follow, but the addition of color to the surgical illustrations is generally not helpful, and not as aesthetically pleasing as the plain line drawings. None of these points is very important, since every urologist needs to own this text. Make it easier by picking the e-edition.

The odds are good, but the goods are odd...
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-07
Although the odds are no longer good (the male/female population ratio in Alaska is now 50/50), you won't have to go far to find a woman who will vouch for the truth of the second part of that statement! For women, Catch and Release, by Alaska residents Jane Haigh, Kelley Hegarty-Lammers and Patricia Walsh, is a very entertaining guide to identifying and finding the Alaska man of your dreams. For guys, it provides a look at the competition - why does the term "Alaska men" have such a mystique to it?

The first Alaska man, we discover in the first few pages of the book, came across the Bering Land Bridge from Asia some 10,000 years ago. Why did he come? Well, "...he did it because he needed to sow some wild oats and he wanted a good hunting story to tell his buddies." When the Russians settled Alaska, there were few women: "Thus, the pattern of self centered Euro-Alaska Bachelors was established..." The construction of the Alaska Highway "...further enhances the can-do machismo of the Alaska man and provides direct overland access for women to pursue them." And thus is the mood of the rest of the book lightly set.

While the history provides interesting background material, the next chapter on Lifestyles gets into the important stuff for women who are thinking about heading North on a hunting trip. The tips on identifying lifestyles ranging from Architect to Bush-Dweller, Dog musher, M.C.P. and Zoologist can save you a lot of time. For example, if mechanics are your type generally, "Keep in mind that an unemployed mechanic may fix your car when it breaks down at 40 below; one with a job won't have time." The illustrated guide to footwear will also be of great benefit - knowing whether those are Lobens or Bunny boots on his feet will allow you to start talking about his probable interests as an ice-breaker, for example.

"Women think these guys can change if only they have the love of a good woman ...it's a seductive myth."
Woman boarding the plane home.

Now that you have a good outline of the possibilities, where do you find your Alaska Man? I'm glad you asked, because the next 50 pages tell you exactly that - the communities, the places and the types of men to be found. In downtown Juneau during the summer, the authors tell us, there's hardly a local guy to be found - one of the few exceptions being the Red Dog Saloon, where some Alaska men go to meet tourists. In Talkeetna, the base for most climbs of Denali, "your chances of meeting attractive, single climbers from all over the world are high; your chances of distracting them from their peak quest are low." Coldfoot, on the Dalton Highway, offers the chance to meet "truck drivers, miners, sourdoughs, and permanent bachelors at this 'manly' kind of place." Nome is the best party town in Alaska when the Iditarod ends, but an aggressive nature is needed to be part of it. And in every community, the post office is a good bet: "Some have bulletin boards inside or out; some have a paper back book trading corner; all have a number of locals chatting about jobs, things for sale, travel, or their love life. Remember, the longer they've been in the community, the lower their post office box number. If you're looking for the seasoned type, linger at the section with box numbers 1 - 75."

There's one firm rule that needs to be mentioned now - Alaska men like sports and outdoor recreation. The specifics vary, but if you want to be with your potential mate very much, be prepared to learn the lingo and brave the elements. Before you agree to going with him, though, a little research can save you a lot of grief. For example, "...when he asks if you want to go on a canoe trip on the Porcupine River, be sure you can find the Porcupine River on the map. Oh yes, there it is, way up there in the far right corner, 100 miles by air from Eagle. (Where's Eagle? Trust us, it's at least five major arguments away, if you're stuck with an inconsiderate lunatic.) Our advice: try a day trip first." And here you thought that the research for writing this book would have been all fun!

From various types of boating to gold mining and skiing, there are many tips on what to do and say - and what you should avoid. If you can clean his fish using the method described, "...your male companion will likely be ready to propose marriage!" Regardless of how well you can field dress a moose, though, you probably won't be invited on any hunting trips, seen by the authors as "an elaborate ritual of male bonding."

Before you head out into the great outdoors, be sure to memorize the chapter "sex and the Alaska man" in which the most important tips are, of course, the four rules for making love in a tent. Before your mind wanders too far off in that direction, I'll add that those tips should probably be read in conjunction with the glossary, where Commitment is defined as "Not present in the Alaska Man's vocabulary."

Scattered throughout the book are quotes about Alaska men, and photos and comments about some of their housing choices. These are the two main features that make the book such a delight for me. Most of the quotes and descriptions would be funny even if they were stretching the truth a bit. The fact that they're accurate makes them even funnier. It really should be obvious why there's a filing cabinet in the back yard, though!

Catch and Release is a book that I pick up and read sections of quite often when I need a chuckle. It's clear that Jane, Kelley and Patricia had a great deal of fun writing the book, and they've done a great job of sharing their experiences.

Happy hunting, ladies!

Explodes the myth of the "Alaskan Man"

I laughed til I cried (or was it - I cried til I laughed?!) I lived the single life in Alaska for 16 years and can attest that EVERYTHING in this book is absolutely totally true. Yes, it's all in fun, but these ladies really are not joking. I could add my huntin', fishin', goodlookin' boyfriend who insisted on wearing no pants except for sweatpants. To work, nice restaurants, funerals, everywhere. I mean EVERYWHERE. Or my "Alaskan cowboy" who had a good job, nice car, dated only very successful career woman, and lived in a shack. A real SHACK! Or the redneck oil engineer making $80,000 who refused to pay any taxes because as an Alaskan he was "sovereign". (Huh?) He sued the IRS - I said HE sued THEM - they had a field day. Or the nice, polite man I had dated 4 times until the day I happened to get behind him in traffic and saw his bumper sticker, "Follow too close & I'll flip a booger on your windshield". Alaska man magazine, Alaskan men on the Oprah show? Oh Pahleeze! Ladies, ladies, please save yourself from heartbreak, disappointment, and your life savings. Don't go to Alaska expecting to find a husband. This book tells the sad, myth shattering, and very funny truth of the "Great Alaskan Man".

Creep's time travelling adventures may be too harrowing for younger readers; in the past he is subjected to apalling child labor (slavery) and physical abuse. However, this is an important subject for older kids. The book is intriguing and suspenseful, and will keep you reading so you will learn some general history in a uniquely concrete, real way. I couldn't put the book down; but I felt the end did not explain everything to my satisfaction, the novel's only drawback.

Intense--and all the more worthwhile

This book is what led me to become interested in the Victorian period. You can't put it down. Younger children will be put off by the unfamiliar English, but older children who have a little more historical background and patience with language will like it. I think this is a brilliant depiction of the horrors of the Industrial Revolution, where child labour was so brutal and so prevalent. Stylistically, it's lyrical and has what we don't often see: the "kind of" happy ending. It really makes you think about our own society and where we have come from. Books like these are important because children can feel a link to kids in the past, and therefore come to a better understanding of the past. Yes, it's gruesome (children get beaten and disfigured), but that's historical truth for you. This is the perfect antidote for the books (and teachers) that insist on never rocking the boat. A thoughtful child of about 11-14 will enjoy this book.
