I have suffered for months from food intolerance, including MSG-related problems. Numerous doctors could not make the connection, so I had to educate myself through reading. Dr. Walsh's book has been a Godsend. It is extremely helpful and is presented in a positive way.

A book that will impact the quality of life of many people.

A book that will impact the life of many individuals. Many people today go through everyday thinking the headaches and many other symptoms are merely associated to stress. This book provides many practical causes of the day-to-day symptoms of food allergies many of us suffer from. I had never thought much about sweetners and had mearly heard rumors about MSG and the impacts it can cause some people.

Also, when one mentions diet, I think about scrimping to find something to suppliment the diet for lack of choices. Dr. Walsh provides not only causes but also solutions/alternatives to food sources that will not cause or at least diminish these symptoms.

In keeping things short I would encourage this book not only to individuals that know they have food allergies but also to those that suffer from many of the symptoms like headaches amd nausea who are probably like me and never thought the food eaten may be the source of the problem.

Wonderful book and easy to read.

I work with Dr. Walsh and when I first did a preceptorship with him I was given his book to read. After first reading the book I thought the ideas seemed extreme, but I am not an allergy sufferer nor do I suffer from any sort of migraines.I then began to visit with a few patients who have taken this book to heart and are praising Dr. Walsh for his medical expertise. Their quality of life has changed, maybe yours will too.

Sheila did it on "Faith" and now she's done it with "prayer'!

There are two hard Biblical topics to wrap your mind around. One is faith and the other is prayer. I know this review is on "Get Off Your Knees and Pray!" but it would be an injustice to not mention Sheila's book "Extraordinary Faith" too! When I read "Extraoridinary Faith" I thought finally somebody has written a book that gives you an understanding of what faith is and how it is not based on us, but on God in us! Well, Sheila has done it again with prayer. "Get Off Your Knees and Pray" is a book that will free you up and help you to understand that as a Christian, prayer is your birthright and it will strengthen your whole life. Here is one of my favorite parts from this book.
"We hear people telling us that the way to God is clearer through something or someone else. That if we read this book, the author will tell us how to reach God. That if we send money to that ministry, someone will talk to God and receive and answer on our behalf. Rubbish! God talks to His people through His Word, through the counsel of Godly friends, and to our own hearts through the Holy Spirit." Skipping 3 paragraphs she goes onto say this. "I'm saying that prayer is sometimes just the beginning of the conversation. So many of the spiritual disciplines that used to be practiced by believers have, to a large extent, been lost. Meditation, solitude, and fasting are elements that are often missing from our lives. It takes an intentional choice to carve out time in our overfull schedules to listen to the voice of God in that way. But Jesus assured us that when we look past all the books and speakers and seek to commune with Him, we will know His voice."
I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to hear from God through prayer or to the one who already faithfully prays.

"Get Off Your Knees And Pray" was an awesome book. Sheila draws from her experiences as a mother and life to share insights that God has given to her about prayer and why it is so important to our Christian Life. Some times we as Christians make prayer more than it is and that can kill our motivation to pray. Sheila, through humor and honesty, challenges our faultily thoughts on the subject and shares how God has changed her perspective. She also talks about why God sometimes does not answer. This is a an awesome book and I would highly recommend it to you! I have been a Sheila Walsh fan since the 80's and so I try to read her books and I can say this one is one of my favorites. Check it out. You will not be sorry! I would also recommend any of her other great books as well.

I purchased this book for my ladies Bible study and what a treat. This book will strenghten your faith and draw you closer to God! It has changed my life and strengthen my prayer time with God and my family. It not only helps you to know how to pray, but also what to pray for. The nice thing about this book is it teaches you how to pray where ever you are and in the middle of what ever circumstance you're in. It's truly a wonderful book! Have your pen and/or highlighter ready. The whole book deserves to be underlined! :) I hope this book will touch your life the way it touched mine. Sincerely, A busy mom of 2 toddlers, who really needs prayer! hehe! :)

This is one of the best books i have ever read!!!!!!!!! Especially on those that are hurting. It is balanced and its as if the writer knows exactly what you are going through. Anyone who struggles with depression should read this book. The author is so real and honest and her heart so true. i just gave this book to a girl who went into rehab. i gave her mine because i didnt have time to get another one. it was VERY hard to give up, but i knew that it would really help her. i am now looking to buy another one. this is not a book you read once. its a great book to refer back to over and over.

The Heartache No One Sees opened my eyes and helped me dig past the mask that I wear in order for others to think well of me. Instead of hiding behind a everything-is-fine mask, Sheila Walsh encourages us to be open to God's redemptive work, to be realistic about the needs that we have and to reach out to others who are also hurting and hiding. Sheila is a real person and very easy to get to know through her writing. I am so thankful for God's work through this book!

Sheila is a blessing from God and has used her life to minister to those hurting. It's a blessing blessing others. Wonderful book that will touch any woman's heart with so many practical and easy to see examples that we can use and relate to in our own lives, even those of us not on TV or with WOF or in the public eye. She is down to earth and honest and gives/shows HOPE with lots of practical questions at the end to ask yourself and think and pray about!

Splendidly illustrated in a 19th century evoking style

Isle aux Morts means "Island of the Dead" and was thus named because of the number of ships and lives lost near its shores. One early morning in June, 1832, Anne Harvey was awakened by two familiar sounds: the howling wind of a storm and the distress call from a ship offshore. The pounding waves prevented Anne's family from approaching the ship in their small boat. The only hope was to send their dog Hairy Man into the sea with a rope. Hairy Man was a strong swimmer and reached the ship safely. Using a breeches buoy the Harveys were able to rescue 163 passengers, one-by- one, from the sinking ship. Splendidly illustrated in a 19th century evoking style by Geoff Butler, Alice Walsh's Heroes Of Isle Aux Morts is a vivid, engaging, and highly recommended retelling of a true story for young readers ages 8-11.

My kids and I love this book, not only because this true story is exciting and inspiring, but also because our own ancestors were on the rescued ship, the Despatch! This story was recorded in handwritten notes in our family archives, and it was wonderful to see it captured so well in print by this author and illustrator.

I've brought the book in to read at my childrens' school and it easily captures the attention of the class. It's inspiring to hear stories of ordinary people (and animals!) exhibiting courage and a can-do attitude, and doing extraordinary things.

The illustrations in this book are superb. The story of the rescue of the passengers of the Despatch by a Newfoundland dog are so vivid due to the bold, colorful pictures. My older daughter loved another Newfoundland dog rescue book called "The Wreck of the Ethie" & my 6 yr.old loved the pictures in this book. What fun to read & enjoy such exciting stories w/ my children!

This is an easy read with realistic stories and happenings
but is more about people than strategy. If you enjoy all types of poker games or you are a relative of someone who loves poker, you should read this book. I did enjoy it. I did learn enough new hints to help me improve my play, and
I had fun reading the book. Even if you hate poker, but you know someone who enjoys poker, you will benefit by reading it, as you will better understand why poker is played by such a variety of people. It is worth reading.

Experienced teacher and museum director Kathleen Walsh-Piper presents Image To Word: Art And Creative Writing, an educational resource that focuses upon how to use great works of art, including painting, sculpture, decoration, and more, to enhance creative writing skills. From exploring basic skills of writing (point of view, stream of consciousness, description, monologue, poetry, etc.) to expounding upon the limits of the imagination, Image To Word combines sample cases with stimulating exercises, and is a welcome self-teaching resource as well as a fine addition to creative writing educator's reference shelves.

Looking to Write

Museum educators have long used writing activities as a way to learn about art. The ancient Greeks even coined a name for the relationship between looking and writing: "ekphrasis." According to the Grove Dictionary of Art, teachers of rhetoric in ancient Greece coined this term to denote "a vivid description intended to bring the subject before the mind's eye of the listener."

In Image to Word: Art and Creative Writing, Kathleen Walsh-Piper explores creative writing as a means of formal critical analysis of art. At the same time, art becomes a source of inspiration for poems, plays and prose pieces, and the writing process a key to self-discovery.

Different chapters focus on a variety of projects of varying complexity. By examining of such formal elements as color, shape and texture, decoding narratives, and connecting to personal experience, Walsh-Piper concentrates on such core writing issues as vocabulary, sequence, and point of view.

Walsh-Piper says, "Writing about works of art breaks down barriers to looking by asking viewers to pay attention to what they see and how they react. From looking at art it is but a short step to looking at our neighborhoods, examining the persuasions of advertisers, the ideology of politicians, evaluating the impact of changes in the environment.

This is an ideal book for teachers of language arts, visual arts, and social studies as well as parents home-schooling their children. Each chapter outlines a series of activities on which teachers can model their own approaches. Examples of poems and prose pieces produced in Walsh-Piper's workshops demonstrate the effectiveness of her process.

"Irish storyteller Marrie Walsh pens a memoir rich with the gifts of warmth, magic and wonder, revisting the scenes of her youth, where every neighbor was family, where hermits and bogey men and ghosts were all equally real and frightening, and where time seemed to have stopped for a while." (synopsis by Alibris)
I love personal accounts of growing up in an earlier generation. This is not the gritty, struggle that was Frank McCourt's experience of a city, depression era childhood. Instead the reader gets the country view of that same period.

A country life classic

Reading this book recently allowed me to discover a worthy successor to Flora Thompson's "Lark Rise to Candleford". Which to my mind stands as the classic textured literary time machine, that allows the reader to taste, touch, hear & smell a bygone era in full measure. Marrie Walsh has created a minor masterpiece with her (first?) book. Not only will those devotees of the country life memoirs find similarities with Thompson, but also touches of Miss Read as well as WB Yeats and Thomas Hardy here. The bitter as well as the sweet with a magical touch of folklife for good measure. Highly recommended. And may we see many more works from Ms Walsh's pen.

Remembering and Celebrating Pope John Paul II
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-28

This book not only contains a profusion of photos but also is quite informative. The reader gets a brief biography of the former Cardinal Wojtyla. One learns of the horrors of the Nazi German occupation, "Lolek's" forced labor in a stone quarry, his study for the priesthood, his lifelong interest in ethics, his love of the outdoors (hiking, skiing, canoeing, etc.). He was a quintessential Pole. After assuming the papacy, Pope John Paul II had Christmas dinner at Krakow with old friends.

It is ironic that the Communist authorities underrated him. He was an advocate of all, not just Catholics. He took a lead in ecumenism, becoming a pioneer of Christian unity. He forgave Mehmet Agca, the Turk who shot him. He revived the office of the deacon. He met with countless world leaders, including Fidel Castro. He believed that universities should be places of encounter with Christ. He reached out to people of all ages, and was an active participant in World Youth Days. It is no exaggeration to say that he "always had the personal touch".

This book is candid about controversial issues. It mentions such things as birth control and the death penalty.

There is a list of canonizations and beautifications performed by Pope John Paul II. The best-known saint canonized by this Pope was Father Maxilian Kolbe, canonized October 10, 1982. Father Kolbe had given his life in free exchange for another prisoner at the German death camp of Auschwitz.

Published to coincide with John Paul II's 25th Papal anniversary in 2003, John Paul II: A Light for the World, is a stunningly beautiful tribute to the late pontiff. Rich with gorgeous photography, this beautifully designed book provides an intimate look at John Paul II and a view of the Vatican that is rarely seen outside its walls. The text (masterfully edited by Sr. Mary Ann Walsh) includes selections from the Pope's writings and speeches, essays by friends, scholars, and church leaders, as well as personal recollections that give us a glimpse of the humanity and humor of the man who led the Catholic Church for 27 years.

No doubt that with the passing of John Paul II, publishers will be rushing to slap together "tribute" books. However, I can't imagine a more thorough, beautifully-produced, or inspiring a volume as this. It is the ultimate commemoration of one of the world's great spiritual leaders.
