An great economic perspective on the formation of the European Union

Review Date: 2007-04-03
Written on the cusp of formalized European political and economic integration in 1992, William Wallace's "The Transformation of Western Europe" is a look back specifically at the economic forces that brought Western Europe towards unification via the European Union. Wallace posits that the true force behind Western Europe's political and economic integration was largely driven more by the economic desires of her people and businesses than by the political will of her politicians. Wallace points out that the motives and desires of Europeans have shifted greatly from the immediate post-World War II era, which tended to be one of temporariness and dependency on the United States, to an era of Europe coalescing and asserting its own independence of thought and action. Reading Wallace's concise history of European economic growth and interdependence it quickly becomes clear that Western Europe's need for economic integration should have been patently obvious to all by the 1960s and yet there were (and remain) naysayers who question its wisdom and long-term viability.

From a personal perspective "The Transformation of Western Europe" gave me greater insight into the economic factors driving the unification of Europe forward that all too often is not included in most histories which tend to focus too much on the political events. There are minor points that bothered me such as the lack of an index, but Wallace's book is well researched and scrupulously footnoted; a breathtakingly concise trip from 1945 to 1990 that well deserves a revisit to bring it up to the present day.

Excellent First Hand Account!

This book is an excellent first hand account of Indian life in the 1700s in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Heckewelder was a Moravian missionary and spy for General Washington in the Ohio country during the Revolutionary war. He goes into great detail about everyday Indian life and how they interacted with other tribes as well as the early settlers. He writes as a reporter of Indian life, what he say & heard between 1762 and 1813 during his extensive travels in early Ohio country (including Marietta, Gallipolis, Cincinnati, Detroit, Pittsburgh and the Moravian Indian towns in Tuscarawas County, Ohio)

An outstanding volume. Extrememly well organized and comprehensive. Aimed at serious practitioner or professional engineer needing quantitative methods and process understanding. This is more than an engineering design manual - a thorough extremely well organized treatment of treatment wetlands. Restoration scientists and practitioners using simple "permanent pools" in stormwater wetlands will benefit from the wetland science and process engineering organized here into the best current reference available.

For a short book (177 pages) it sure contains a lot of action. So many unexpected events that I never even dreamed would happen.
This book made me really think about my children and what is really going on around the local schools. I now look around when I drive by a school or Recreational center and parks, just wondering if any of the people hanging around could be a drug dealer. I am also wondering if my child or my friends children know these kinds of people. I pray they don't!
I also understand there is a music CD that goes with this book, if anyone knows how to get this I would love to find out.
I am also happy to see Mr Wolford dedicated this book to the actor Carroll O'Connor, who tried to fight the drug problem.

What's more fun than the zoo?

Beginning readers who love wild animals will fall in love with A Trip to the Zoo by Karen Wallace.

Two brothers are taken by Mom to the zoo to see up close all the animals they had seen in books and movies. They get to see and even touch some of the animals, and their wish to take one home with them is somewhat satisfied by "sponsoring" an animal at the zoo.

At home, they thank Mom by painting pictures of all that they saw, so that they could all have their very own zoo! A "Picture word list" provides a valuable review.

still a good introduction to tropical nature

"Tropical Nature and Other Essays" was originally published by Macmillan in 1878. It consists of a set of essays most of which Wallace had printed in various journals in the several preceding years, and features his easy and lucid writing style and attention to detail. 'Not surprising, the last, as Wallace was the leading field biologist of his time (or perhaps of any time), and many of these observations led him to theoretical positions (such as natural selection) that remain subjects of study by present-day naturalists. There are chapters on the physical environment of the tropics, animal and plant life, the role of color in nature, the phenomena of mimicry and protective coloration, hummingbirds, and geographical distribution. Despite the intervening 125 years, this work remains one of best general introductions to the world of tropical nature, understandable to any educated layperson, instructive to ecologists, biogeographers and other naturalists, and reflective of the personality of one of history's most interesting men of science.

The honesty of the narrator, Isobel Roundtree, never falters. This is a book read in a day without putting it down. I definitely hear echoes of Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird, the world from a wise child's point of view and a book not written for children. Recommended.

This book is adorable and beautifully illustrated, and I recommend it to anyone with a child who enjoys reading about animals. I am especially proud because the dog featured is a pointer puppy that I bred called Jack! I am thrilled to see him on paper in such a sweet and charming book. :-)

I'm a developmental psychologist teaching at University of Washington in Tacoma. I've used this book as a resource for my students who want to do a directed reading with me. I find that it is a very useful resource to introduce the reader to seminal research in child psychology and it is written at a level that is perfect for someone who isn't very proficient at reading scientfic literature. I highly suggest this book to those who want a good overview of the fundamental theories of child psychology. Though, I have to say that I wish it would have tried to give more credit to the philosophy of behaviorism which is crucial to our understanding of child psychology.
