A Really Awesome Review

I liked the book because it's funny and has a very weird twist at the end. Kent thinks the monster is real, but turns out it's not. When he and his friends fish they see headlights (A.K.A the eyes.) When one of the smartest kids in the group finds out that there's a sub in the lake they go for help. But my favorite part is when they skinny dip in the lake and their friends call them "cottontails".

Poetry in meat-packing
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-01
First produced by the Royal National Theatre in the Pit, Slaughter City presents the gritty world of a meat-packing plant in lyrical terms. The workers, grappling with issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality, are forced to reconsider their relationship to one another when a stranger, a time-traveler of sorts, appears on the kill-floor to labor with them. The play offers stark images of realism alongside surreal moments of dance, poetry, and raw sexuality. Drawing heavily on an expressionistic tradition, Wallace often tells the story through the subjective eyes of Cod, the time-traveler. Because of the political and unrealistic nature of Wallace's play, she was forced to look to England for production of this play, but I was happy to have discovered it in my travels to London. I treasure the sensual language that transforms everyday things like driving a pickup truck into a passionate race that reverberates coming off the tongue as much as the roaring engine she describes. Slaughter City is beautiful and disturbing in production, but it offers a message of hope as the workers in her play find liberaion throught their relationship with one another. As beautiful to read as it is to watch, Slaughter City marks the beginning of what should be a distinguished career as a dramatist. A prodigy of Kushner, Wallace follows up Slaughter City with One Flea Spare

I purchased Wind, Rain, Clouds and Snow. Wonderful short science books and very easy for young readers. My 5 year old twins love to read their 'science' books. It is difficult to find simple non fiction books for this age group, but these are perfect fit.

This is the best snowboard guide book because it's the first edition--everything is up to date, which is super important in snowboard park reviews because things change so much year to year.
Even more importantly, the writers are snowboard industry insiders, so they definitely know where's cool to hang out after shredding. Lots of pro snowboarders comments and tons of cool background info.

Multicultural Introduction to Sociology
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-09-06
I have used Ferrante's text now in my introductory sociology classes for over five years. In its 4th ed., the text has been greatly recieved in all my classes. What is so different about the text is that it has an international and multicultural perspective. While examining the same concepts found in most introductory texts, Ferrante's work explores them within a wider, international context, all the while providing a comparative look at American society. Each chapter takes the reader to a different part of the globe, providing both excellent historical and contemporary examples. Most importantly (especially for my students), the text allows the instructor to introduce sociology and diversity at the same time. Not only timely, but imperative in this emerging global, postmodern era. You'll get a lot of miles out of this one!

Provides both the strategy and the tactics

I found this book especially suited as a night-stand book, that could be quickly opened, read, and then put back after just a few minutes. As such, it is segmented into 50 simple chapters, each one with a short fable and accompanying suggestions. The suggestions are gently made, and the author unfailingly provides a supportive, encouraging tone throughout the book. Most importantly, though, he gives the parent a way of looking at your children, and understanding your role, that helps frame things for those times when children "test" their parents (strategy). Then, he offers ways to get around the inevitable anger and frustration that parents feel (tactics). This is a book that I will go back to again and again. It will be a good reminder to help me build better habits relating to our kids.

Focused, clear and full of great information

This gem is a straightforward approach to error analysis that is presented in a life cycle structure. It starts with an introduction that discusses the cost benefits of early error detection and provides guidelines for selecting error analysis techniques.

The error life cycle is covered in chapters 3 through 5 and is as follows: techniques for detecting errors, removal of errors and collection and analysis of error data.

Techniques for detecting errors cover detection strategies in each phase of a standard development life cycle. The phases that the authors focus on are requirements, design, implementation, test, installation and operations/maintenance. While this aligns to the older waterfall approach, the detection strategies can be easily refactored to fit spiral or iterative development. As such, this section is not as out of date as it seems - I saw how to easily fit this to the Rational Unified Process. What I found valuable in this chapter was the section on benefits of classes of error detection techniques. This is a solid set of guidelines with which to develop a tailored detection strategy that can fit nicely into a number of areas. Good candidates include: software engineering process group, SQA function, or program management office function that oversees quality from a high level. Moreover, this chapter is augmented by Appendix A, which provides 32 techniques ranging from algorithm analysis to walkthroughs. Appendix B extends this information by cross-referencing these techniques to standards documents that include ISO 9000, IEEE, ANSI and a number of others. These two appendices alone are worth the price of the book.

Error removal covers identification, investigation and resolution approaches. This chapter gives a methodical approach to this function and, like the preceding chapter, can be tailored and incorporated into an organization-wide strategy.

My favorite chapter covers data collection and analysis. What made this chapter valuable is the step-by-step approach the authors give to applying SPC (statistical process controls) to error analysis. This chapter is important to organizations that are striving for CMM Levels 4 or 5, and shows how easy it is to implement SPC and the value such an approach brings.

Both authors work for NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology). I have read much of Ms. Wallace's other work and have come to regard her as a world-class expert in error analysis and software assurance techniques. This book reflects both author's wide experience and expertise and is characterized by clear writing and ample use of graphics to illustrate the SPC portions of the book. I personally think it should be in the library of every serious SQA practitioner, and should be used in the development of software engineering process improvement and quality strategies. It earns a solid five stars.
