Democracy between two hard covers!

This is a great book. It covers current thinking from five important theorists on Acient Greek Democracy. Not only do the opinions represented seem to cover the entire field, but the authors differ on certain elements, and, referencing each other, state how they each believe democracy evolved from an ancient system of nobles and elites who all answered to a very outspoken public. From hierarchical hero worship to networked, participative, communal, hoplite warfare, to egalitarian politics with a limited demos, of course... The method of presenting differing opinions that build off of, and in a sense duel with eachother is a brilliant application of the ancient greek sciences of rhetoric that democracy is so loved for in the first place, in my opinion. This has been an invaluable and timely addition to my library.

Outstanding Florida Research and Great Pictures

Orlando: City of Dreams is a well researched, fascinating account of pre-Disney Orlando in particular and Florida in general. It leads the reader through Florida history as a frontier land of opportunity where fortunes were made, lost and made again. From Osceola's Head through Civil War battles, hurricanes and killer frosts it reads more like a novel than a history book.
The author grew up in Florida, moved out into the world then came back with a new appreciation for the Sunshine State. She includes a portfolio of vintage pictures which effectively enhance the wide open American feel of the book.

Great adventure book

I first read this book in the 1950's and was my favorite book. It is a more realistic story than Tom Sawyer, but contains just as much adventure. It is the kind of book boys can picture themselves as part of the action. After spending 25 years in the Navy the book got lost. I ordered it from Amazon and the adventure is still just as good.

I recommend it for a trip down memory lane for older adults of a simple time in our past and for young people who love the out doors.

The cutest book!

This book shows how a friendship between an older rabbit and a little girl grows. Its so cute, because the illustrations are wonderful and so detailed. Young children will love watching the paperwhite flowers grow in each picture, and how the knitting gets bigger until its 2 finished scarves, and other little things like that. Its a book that will charm anyone.

A Truly Novel Novel
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-12
A book designed as a teaching text for college level students, "Parallel Lives" seeks to explore issues of personal identity, expression, and responsibility. Via a racial incident on a college campus, the text explores the various reactions and viewpoints of students, following both the development and resolution of the incident, as well as their own personal growth. The book focuses on a group of students in one writing class--but clearly shows the reverberations this incident pulses across the entire campus. As a text, it instructs students important things about thinking critically and writing well; as a novel, it provides a highly accessible story that is both engaging to students and faculty. A deeper look into the enmeshed, and not always easy, worlds of college life and academics, written in a relaxed and realistic voice, "Parallel Lives" is an excellent tool for the student of writing, thinking, and life.

It is a pleasure to recommend this book. The Peculiar Democracy is an interesting survey of Southern Democrats. It makes important distinctions between populist-minded Jacksonians and elite-minded Bourbons. It points out that Jeffersonian ideals associated with yeoman farmers and self-reliance were not fulfilled by the arrogant slothfulness of the plantation aristocracy.

I have found this book to be extremely helpful in setting up a peer support group. The overview of current research is topical, and the practical exercises cover major aspects of listening actively to other people. I also liked the chapter on ethics and the law. I thoroughly recommend it!

Touched my Soul

Review Date: 1999-05-12
Bronwyn Wallace's series of short stories tells tales of heart ache and joy. Her book touched my life. Her understanding of women and their goals and dreams is very clear. Possibly made clearer by the fact that she died of cancer while completing the final edit of this book. Her final story entitled, People You'd Trust Your Life To, is a story of a group of women who provide the support for each other through thick and thin. Bronwyn was an excellent writer.
