'JIB' and 'FDI', and free zones. Aqaba special economic zones and development corporations are discussed in detail. Jordanian
tax and regulatory are discussed at length as are the Amman stock exchange, as well as banking regulation and supervision.
Of special note is the chapter devoted to media and advertising. "Doing Business With Jordan" concludes with up-to-date information
on Jordanian labor laws, living and working conditions, residential and commercial property markets. Enhanced with three appendices
providing useful addresses and contact details, general information, and contributor contact details, "Doing Business With
Jordan" is an essential reference for any American corporation contemplating doing any kind of business in Jordan. Companies
considering (or actively engaged in) doing business anywhere overseas should visit the Global Market Place website for a complete

Helen Wallace has done it again. This book is every bit as funny as the "High Back Pain and Very Close Veins." The only thing
wrong with it--it was much too short! I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

I read a first edition copy and I'm thrilled to see this book back in print. It was originally published in 1925.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though I had solved the mystery 2/3 of the way through the story. The book reads like a Saturday matinee serial with quick chapters, lots of action and cliff hangers. The romance at the end feels tacked on. There is no reason for the detective and the librarian to fall for each other!

shared concerns and similar lives of the two major American figures

The subtitle is taken from Melville's short story "Benito Cereno." Although Wallace cannot verify that the two major
early 19th-century American figures ever met, he abundantly demonstrates from themes and quotes from their influential writings
and activities and associations of theirs that the two men were kindred spirits. A professor of Literature and Language at
Northern Kentucky U. and former president of the Melville Society, Wallace found his intuition that Douglass and Melville
were connected in significant ways "deepened and expanded in multiple ways" as he researched and wrote this work. No one can
argue with this after reading his work with much visual matter emphasizing the ties between these two important literary and
cultural figures. Stories of Melville's and essays of Douglass's deal with individuals at the bottom or margins of society,
the cruelties of physical punishment, and also the characteristic perspectives and abilities of individuals treated as less
than human. An accessible work for young adults and adults that with its plumbing of comparisons of the works and concerns
of Melville and Douglass sheds new light not only on them, but also American society in the years leading up to the Civil
War.

I wish I'd purchased this book when I was first diagnosed with SLE in 1991. This book shows specifically how the disease attacks
each organ system, relevant research, and treatment. In essence, it can help the patient know when a sypmtom is serious (e.g.,
chest pain), and help them know the best questions to ask the rheumatologist to maximize their treatment.

An Excellent Book from a Lecture Series at Oxford

For those of you who may not know the name, JM Wallace-Hadrill is one of "THE" names in Early Medieval germanic studies.
In this book, as in all his others, he speaks clearly and with authority.
In this book (the result of a lecture series delivered at Oxford) the topic is germanic kingship: our understanding of it and it's evolution. The chapter headings are:
Germanic Kingship and the Romans
King Aethelberht
The Seventh Century
Bede
Charlemagne and Offa
Charles the Bald and Alfred
Five Stars. A synopsis of a lecture series, there are gaps in time if not in thinking. Absolutely top rate analysis. There are references and it should be noted that this is an academic work, by which I mean that the reader will be expected to know some limited Latin. (see below for example)
"What was the characteristic of the Tacitean rex? It was nobilitas. For this, says Tacitus, reges were `taken' by the Germans: `reges ex nobilitate... sumunt.' He used a semantically neutral verb, sumere, that implied nothing about how the taking was managed. In this respect they differed from certain war-leaders who he calls duces: these were `taken' for virtus, prowess in the field.
Note: Amazon does not allow for italics so the latin is in regular print. Also, I don't want you to think that the book is chalked full of Latin. Mostly it is not. There are however, sections like the above which do deal with terminology and, of course, the derivation of that terminology is discussed. Mostly I think a non-Latin reader would do fine with this book if the topic is of interest. [Certainly it's been decades since I read/wrote Latin and I enjoyed re-reading this text.]

This was originally written by a Reformed rabbi in 1969. I am amazed at the amount of biographical data that he was able
to pre-internet. He must have gne through every roll of microfilm, every index, every ledger book of wills and deeds in New
Orleans! This is a stunning achievement.
But as thorough as Rabbi Korn's research, he did not allow himself to get bogged down in minutia. In fact, he writes in a fairly lively style and keeps the narrative moving along nicely, given the scope and genre. He injects just enough editorial and opinion to keep things interesting (even when you disagree with his speculations), but he is fairly reliable and objective.
The impression is that the early Jews (arriving before 1800) were always a dynamic community. Their successes and influence was always greater than their numbers. many of New Orleans' greatest philanthropists were Jews. Judah Benjamin, Touro, and others makes this a fascinating read.
Highy recommended.
A nice updated photographic supplement to thsi work is Irwin Lachoff's The Jewish Community of New Orleans (2005).

William Wallace's three Songbooks (Easy Piano) are a godsend to anyone working with keyboard players of any age or ability.
For the novice player there are popular Standard (Public Domain) pieces with manageable left hand parts and yet well arranged
enough to be attractive and catchy to play. These include 'Morning Has Broken', 'El Condor Pasa', 'Sloop John B' - to name
but three. An added bonus here is that young people are presented with the opportunity of realising that many composers/singers
sometimes 'borrow' ideas from others!
For the player of a year or more experience there are beautiful Standards like 'The Swan' by Saint-Saens to challenge and inspire. Pachelbel's 'Canon in D' is given in the key of C and is manageable by the older beginner or the younger one of some experience and is a great opportunity for left-hand arpeggio playing practice. In fact pretty well all of the pieces will provide players of any experience with an insight into the musical tradition of the last few hundred years and will help broaden the musical taste of those perhaps over-exposed to modern commercial music.
Almost by way of a hidden bonus the books are 'sprinkled' with several popular Christmas pieces of the last few centuries. These are playable by those in their first year or so of playing and will motivate all learners to master them! Altogether a great collection!
Well done William!
