perfect for filling in the cracks of your time with some educational trivia. but be warned: this book has the ability to consume your attention!

perfect for travel, although when reading in public places be prepared to explain to others what you find so funny.

i brought this on vacation with me: great for plane rides and beach lounging due to its easily-digestable list format.

not a collection of dry facts: the selection of topics is unique and imaginative, and the content itself presented in a variety of formats.

something for everyone! become a force to be reckoned with at Trivial Pursuit!

No More Fear

This book is nothing short of amazing for explaining the meaning to the Book of Revelation in the Bible. There is no need to cower in fear over the imagery used in the bible's book of revelation. Reading Wallace is indeed a blessing. Fortunately I had alread read Matthew 24 fullfilled, by John L. Bray, and Kenneth Gentry's the Beast of Revelation. These other two books made it a lot easier to comprehend what Wallace is saying. I don't know if I could appreciate Wallace without an introductory book. Wallace is definately graduate level study. All who read him will never again fear over prophecy.

A wonderful book on Shamatha
Helpful Votes: 27 out of 27 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-23
This book (says the introduction) was distilled from a series of talks Wallace gave as he led a retreat on Shamatha (a.k.a shi nay -- "calm abiding meditation") up in the Sierras, and it retains an informal, practical, nuts-and-bolts atmosphere. This isn't for people who want to speculate or theorize about the Dharma: it's for people who want to practice. I've been meditating for many years, but this is the first and still the only book I've actually used as part of my practice -- often before sitting down on the cushion I'll read a few pages of it, to remind myself of what I'm doing and why.

There's lots of useful advice here. Wallace talks about the art of practicing Shamatha as a sort of tuning the intensity of awareness-- too little intensity and you tend to sink into torpor, too much and you tend to follow distractions. He warns against practicing with too much grim determination, which can squeeze the joy out of it and make one sick of meditation. On down to the simple suggestion that if you're too sleepy during practice you should probably get more sleep.

Wallace is a distinguished scholar. He was for many years a monk in the Tibetan tradition, and he speaks from a deep reservoir of experience and teaching. But he's also a Westerner and (now) a householder, so that he understands the tribulations, and unexpected benefits, of practicing in this world of busy distractions and pressing duties. This book radiates a gentle kindliness and simplicity of heart. For me it's an endless source of comfort and inspiration to practice.

Enlightening and interesting reading - highly recommended

The book compares the creation legends of the Egyptians, Central Americans, Hindus and the verses of Genesis , with the theories & discoveries of mordern physics. The author points out that mythology is a summary of science, history and philosophy. It is misinterpreted today because it comes down in distorted form and because ancient communication techniques were different from our own.Ancient civilizations communicated pictorially, giving human and animal shapes to principles and forces. Mordern scholars prefer to use algebraic equations and Latin or Greek symbols. Their purpose being the same, denude both their methods of presentation, and they have the same story to tell: that all of space is permeated with a many-dimensional field-of-mind similar to the physicist's Quantum Field and that mass or matter is a condensation thereof - M = E/Csq., the descent of Atman to the Earth. Comparisons between Einstein's Theory of Relativity & Hindu mythology ,The Big Bang Theory & the Vedic legend of the cracking of the cosmic egg in the creation of this universe make interesting reading.

"The Bridge of Quiescence" is an excellent detailed discussion of the basic meditation technique of all schools of Buddhism, and even some non-Buddhist approaches. "Quiescence" refers to tranquility meditation, a way to attain a stabilized mind. The "Bridge" part of the title refers to the role of "restful attention" as a necessary basis for further spiritual development. The central chapter offers a translation from Tsongkhapa of the Gelungpa School of Tibetan Buddhism. This could be a tough slog but Wallace provides his own very helpful interpretation, sometimes making reference to Western psychology. So this book is definitely not an introductory text. But for those with some familiarity with meditation in general and Tibetan Buddhism in particular, you'll benefit immensely.

This book has plenty of outstanding photography, both game action as well as behind the scenes. Plenty of shots of the fans as well. All of the photographs are large color photos, and are of great quality. The narratives with each picture are concise, telling the story of the photo without getting in the way or overtaking the photo. A great addition ot any Bama fan's library. I bought one for my Dad, and then went back and bought one for myself.

What a delightful book. Designed to be very interactive, a task is described (e.g., cutting a piece of wood) and the child selects which tool would be appropriate for the job (e.g., saw). The fold-out page then confirms the answer. Great for do-it-yourselfers who want to train their children how to hand them the proper tools. I bought several copies for the children of my favorite "handy-men."

As poetry goes, fame comes last. George Wallace, if I was in charge, would be herald the minstrel mountain troubadog of joyous bark and babble. A true wizard in the art of language, as beat, paint or something to stand in. By and away the furthest word from a man of mouth. The last 10 or so poems in this collection could alone blow your head into cupcakes. It did me. Recommended highly.

Rich, Creative, Comic-illustrated History of French Louisiana
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-24
This is among the most creative and engaging pieces of Louisiana history I have encountered. It is billed as a 'pictorial history for kids of all ages," and that is true. It is so well-illustrated and clearly written that it would be accessible to most 8 year olds, but this grown up loved it.

I also learned a TON. Guy Faucheux is a true master of Louisiana French history, and his brother-in-law Wally Faucheux is an accomplished illustrator.

St. Roux's Press did a very fine job of printing this as well. The cover is very attractive, the paper quality is excellent, and the typeface is sharp. The glued binding is sturdy and appropriate to this brief book -- my copy has held up well to repeated readings.

Perfectly executed from start to finish.

P.S. For stuffier supplemental reading, I'd recommend Alcee' Fortier's various histories (written in the 1890s). Guy Faucheux credits Marcel Giraud's A History of French Louisiana and Carl Brasseaux's France's Forgotten Legion, both well-regarded works.
