An insightful look at the REAL history of Native Americans.

Paul A. W. Wallace offers us an unbiased account of the history of the Native American people of Pennsylvania. Each chapter made me want to learn more about the individual tribe that was represented in its pages and inspired me to continue reading. Mr. Wallace does not ever compare the European settlers with the Indians and say that one was more savage than the other. He merely points out that the Native American people were more intelligent than what the history books would have us believe. Paul Wallace introduces us to an innocent culture and guides us through the necessary metamorphosis of a land besieged by "conquerors." If you're interested in the plight of Native Americans, or in the history of Pennsylvania, this book should become the keystone of your library!

Thorough and accessible historical and cultural overview

I was really pleased with this book, all the more so since it was published in 1970, when attitudes towards Native Americans weren't as they are today in 2005.

The book is not too long, but thorough and well-documented. It's about right for someone who's really busy and just wants a good and thorough overview.

The book explains well the various tribes (including the Delaware, Iriquois, Eries, Susquehannocks, Shawnee, Conoy, Conestoga, Mohawk, Oneida, Tuscarora, and Wyandots), although it's focus is particularly on the Delaware and Iriquois, who were descendant and ascendant at the time. Wallace does a particularly good job explaining the impact of white settlers on the native tribes, particularly in terms of the impact on native economics, which drove local tribes to immediately abandon traditional weapons for guns, which they could only get from the settlers. In order to get guns, the only item the settlers wanted were furs, which were in demand in Europe, particularly beaver. Immediately the local animal populations were devastated, and in order to get more, the Native tribes had to go further and further west. All the tribes realized that their fates were precarious, as they dealt with the English in the East and the French to the North, and the Indian tribes weren't innocent, they worked politics and alliances as well as the English... although perhaps not as well as the French. The Iriquois in particular had a clear vision of what they had to do to survive, and jockeyed to become the middle-men between the other Indian tribes and the settlers.

There's much more than this, including primary source accounts from the 17th and 18th Century, well-balanced descriptions of culture, technology, religion, and ceremonies, maps and illustrations, and the final migration of the Indians out of Pennsylvania, based on a series of land purchases and the "extinguishment of Indian title." And of course much history about the wars and conflicts between tribes and the settlers.

History has been revised (as it has been before and will be before), and this book may have an older point of view that may not be what is conventional wisdom today regarding relations between the settlers and natives. But in some ways this point of view is new to me, and is worth considering. Rather than being entirely stolen, land in pennsylvania was purchased in fairly above-board manners that surprised me. When taken in context of how land had been won and lost between the tribes for centuries before, and how there was a vast uninhabited area in Western Pennsylvania due to the disappearnce of the Monongahelia tribe (due to plague or conquest is unknown), it puts things in a new perspective. That doesn't lessen by any means other tragic events (such as the forced relocation through the Trail of Tears, etc.) and what conventional wisdom says are hundreds of other broken treaties, but it is a different perspective.

I'd recommend this book for people with an interest in local history, and students in high school and perhaps junior high school.

This atlas is a book that every healthcare provider dealing with tropical disease/infectious disease should have in their library. It is very comprehensive in detail but is most useful in conjunction with a book detailing the specifics of these disease.

Highly recommended

A neccessary companion to the study of tropical medicine

This book is an excellent companion to the study of tropical medicine and clinical parasitology for the beginner as well as the experienced reader. The pictures, graphs and maps are very good and this edition has been updated and expanded significantly with new illustations, maps, updates of life cycles of parasites, relevant x-rays, clinical pictures and illustrations of parasites and hosts. A perfect companion to a textbook of tropical medicine. Highly recommended. The resolution of the pictures on the CD-ROM are, however, a bit too low to enjopy fully for my eyes. The book is recommended for the postgraduate courses in tropical medicine and medical parasitology at the University of Oslo. This book lists over 8000 B-17's by Nose Art Name, Bomb Group, Squadron, Serial number, and if the auther has a photograph of the aircraft. Not all information is availible on all aircraft but this is a remarkable amount of information.

A great book enthusiasts, not necessarily casual fans

For my purposes, the book is phenomenal. I often need to know the accompanying Bomb Groups and Squadrons for a given B-17 so that I may paint the nose art on A-2 jackets. As the description states, it does list the Nose Art names with the associated Bomb Groups and Squadrons if available. It does also list the serial numbers for the B-17s and if there is a known picture in existence. THERE ARE VERY FEW PICTURES IN THIS BOOK, IT IS BASICALLY A LONG LIST OF NAMES AND SERIAL NUMBERS. IF PICTURES IS WHAT YOU WANT, GET "VINTAGE AIRCRAFT NOSE ART" by Gary M Valant AS THAT HAS NEARLY 1000 PICTURES OF DIFFERENT NOSE ART SAMPLES. Incredible amount of information packed into this book. if you're a true WWII buff, get this when you can as it seems to go in and out of print and sometimes is hard to get.

A must for B-24 Buffs! Wally has expanded his format to include data on AF Wings and their component bomb groups for most of the USAAF. His B17 Nose Art Directory was concerned with the 8th, 15th, and 20th AFs. And rather than searching the total list for group aircraft he has listed the a/c assigned to each group by group number. Definitely a source book for important data (names, serial numbers, photo availability) on this aircraft.

Truly a great book for enthusiasts

I also like that Forman listed the B-24s alphabetically, but also went a step further and listed them by Bombardment group as well which makes it very easy to reference the bombers.

Friendly watercolors.
Chubby toddlers.
Adoring relatives and adorable babies. What's not to love?

Vestergaard's wonderful word play on a universal theme, babies and the people who love them, is pleasing to the ear. Wallace's illustrations compliment the fun.

All this comes wrapped up in a pastel presentation of perfect poetry.

Makes me wanna go "ahhhh!"

BABY LOVE is a delightful collection of short poems that celebrates the world of babies. Some of the poems are sweet and touching while others are silly and fun. My personal favorite is called SWEET DREAMS:

"Of all the places you can rest,
Your favorite one is Daddy's chest.
You tuck your head beneath his chin,
Feel his breath and smell his skin.
Your cozy perch moves up and down...
Up and down..."

BABY LOVE makes a perfect shower or baby gift for any new parent. It's also a cozy, cuddle-up read aloud with your own special baby. John Wallace's delicious watercolor illustrations and imaginative borders are the perfect compliment to this engaging collection. "Enjoy this wee bliss."

This book is life changing! Whether man or woman, single or married, this book has sound, Biblical revelation on how men and women are to deal with each other on this Earth. I really appreciate how Apostle Wallace defines and assigns Biblical value to each gender; he also explains how these values came to be. He truly is a trailblazer for revealing information that has been laying in front of our faces for years, but we haven't taken the time to decipher.
The book is great and a sound investment for your life as a married or single Christian. You will have a stronger sense of the purposes of men, women, marriage and relationships. Buy one for you and a friend...you'll want to pass it on.

This book is a "right now" book. I believe that God always have an answer for our troubled times. He uses vessels to get messages of encouragement to His people. This book, I believe, is one of His messages to His beloved women. Women are facing many challenges and are searching for balance. Behold The Woman, has shed some light on areas that I believe will bring some balance and deliverance to many who are searching, it certainly has for me.

This book details the life story of Bessie P. Gutmann. It has MANY color prints of her art work and it is worth buying. I was thrilled to meet the author's daughter on line and she was able to have her father ... sign my book. It is a valuable source of information, names of the pictures, stories about them and three indexes. You will not regret the purchase!

Unlike other books that approach the bar business from the liquor companies perspective, this book provides a clear step by step approach to manageing a bar. A primer is provided on the language of the business, wines are explained in language you can understand and each chapter has thoughtful questions that help a student understand the material. I heartily recomend this book.

This book, handsomely published by Wesleyan University Press, provides an essential and accurate record of Williams' involvement with little magazines and small publishing houses. The format is a model of clarity and accessibility. Many entries reveal his interest in painting and all the visual arts. Poems with the same title, like "Poem" or "Love Song," are carefully kept separate by giving the first line with the title. Section A concentrates on the first editions of all books and pamphlets by Williams. Section B describes the books with contributions by Williams. Section C lists his contributions to periodicals published both in the United States and abroad. Other sections describe recordings, broadsheets and cards, and all manner of miscellanea. Williams' remarkable popularity throughout the world is outlined in the section on translations. And his one known medical article is given its own section. Blank pages are offered for notes and additions. The index provides easy access to all names and titles, but the entries are also cross-referenced in helpful ways. Wallace's introduction titled, in Williams' words, "The Complete Collected Exercises toward a Possible Poem" is charming and incisive. Photographs of Williams, including one by Charles Sheeler, and a facsimile of the title page of his first book of poems is included. This bibliography should be updated and reprinted.
