Comprehensive, current, and shockingly readableReview Date: 2006-11-15
My only criticisms? (1) The "it's in the other volume" problem inherent to all multi-volume tomes and (2) considering that the topic is imaging, the set is short on images, especially short of differential diagnosis comparison images.

Nietzsche asks: given that we always live in such a present, why do we want or need historical knowledge? Animals live without a historical sense: they do not reflect on the past or contemplate their future -- they simply live from moment to moment in the eternal present that humans perpetually avoid. And generally, Nietzsche notes, animals seem happier than human beings: more spontaneous, more cheerful, less given to morbid and resentful states of mind.
Given these differences, should humans abandon the study of history and try to live in the present like animals? No, says Nietzsche, this relation to history is the true source of human uniqueness and achievement. The question is not "Should we study history?" but rather, "What history should we study, and in what amount?" The answer, says Nietzsche, is history that gives us a proper appreciation of life's difficulties and the struggles that have preceded us, but which nonetheless spurs us to creative action in the present. We should never study history for history's sake; rather, we should study it with a view to understanding and surpassing our present.
This is a short, powerful volume, dense with ideas but astoundingly clear.

gives historical perspectiveReview Date: 2006-11-25
In this somewhat short text, the authors explain the turbulent history of the Middle East. Key ideas like a secular pan-Arabism, militant Islam and globalisation are invoked, as necessary to understanding the current region. We see how pan-Arabism gave rise to the Baathist regimes in Syria and Iraq. Though for the latter, at least till the American invasion of 2003. Globalisation is a major cause of outside forces, like secular consumerist societies of Europe and the US, overlapping with deeply traditional Muslim mores. Often to the puzzlement of both sides.
Of course, the role of Israel and Palestine has impacted so much in the region, and the book also addresses these factors.
While the text was written in 2006, it necessarily cannot deal significantly with the events in Iraq for 2006. Rather, you can read it as a historical perspective.

A decent introductory textReview Date: 2004-08-28
Politics and Change views the Middle East from a variety of perspectives: sociological, anthropological, political, historical and religious. It looks at the bases for diversity & unity in the region and the rise of Islam. It then discusses the formation of the early Islamic state and the development of the Sharia (religious law)from the Koran and the hadith (or statements and actions ascribed to Mohammad), the development of the Shia in opposition to the corrupt secular governments and the rise of the different sects. It then moves on to a discussion of Western Imperialism and the resulting development of nationalism and individual states (as opposed to the Umma or body of the believers as a whole), including the growth of Zionism and the establishment of the Israeli state.
Then changes in the political landscape, especially the (failed) Oslo Accord, are discussed as are religious and politics - and the 3 types of political elites and of the various forms leadership has taken. Moving on, it touches on the relations of the individual nations with the great powers (including the remnant of the now-defunct Soviet Union during its cold war competition with the United States) as well as looking at the foreign policies of the regional powers and at changes that have taken place globally (e.g., the fall of the old Soviet Union), the American-Iraq Persian Gulf War and the tensions with Kuwait and with regard to the Israeli-Palestine issue and Israel's relation to the larger Arab world.
Although this is only an introductory text, it makes a serious attempt at providing a holistic view of the Middle East and its often insoluble-appearing problems.

little peace of mind book, in the bathtubReview Date: 2008-11-04
There are a lot of little useful articles in this book. It's a leisure time reading. The book is water proof therefore perfect for those bath times.
I didn't know that there are six of them in a series, will try to pick up a few more. I do however, agree with the previous commenter that the sticker price of $7.95 is a bit too much.
Great little book for bathers!Review Date: 2003-04-12
Nice little bookReview Date: 2006-04-23
Though the book, as the title suggests, is small enough to fit in your soapdish, it is also, as listed, 164 pages, and has quite a lot of information in it. It also claims to be waterproof, which I haven't tested, but from the feel of the pages, I don't doubt.
The sections listed are:
Introduction: The Fountain of Youth
Pampering your Oasis
True Tranquility
Ancient Remedies in the Bath
Accoutrements for Pampering
The Tao of Bathing
Epilogue: Catering to the Other Senses
Among other things, there is information on what essential oils and bath salts are and how to use them. Much of the book focuses on different types of baths, including sort of a "recipe" for starting each type and how to carry it through. The book also focuses on different types of stretching, exercises, and massage to do while in the bath to relax and heal.
All in all, I would say the book is fun to read and have, but I definitely wouldn't pay the MSRP for it. If you want it and can pick it up for something you find reasonable I'd recommend it.

Travis Bonham and Manny Ruiz are quirky Texas Rangers investigating the death of a teenage boy. They suspect a serious dope ring is living and breathing in their jurisdiction. Simon Caruthers, a powerful and wealthy man in the community, is arrested because the Rangers have strong suspicion he's involved with the sale of illegal drugs. Caruthers hires Perry Hamilton, a successful criminal attorney, to defend him from the charges.
Once teens are hooked on the drugs, the price goes up. For those who can't pay, other arrangements are made, as the strung out teens are forced by their addiction to star in pornographic movies in order to keep flying high. Things go from bad to worse, as a bad shipment of the drugs winds up killing many of the teenage addicts from one particular area. The Rangers need to act quickly to catch the drug dealer and put an end to the deaths and porno flicks.
With unsuspecting twists and turns, Vengeance is Mine, moves like a freight train. The characters are well drawn. Though the novel is short, it is entertaining, and promises to be a quick and enjoyable read.

A quick satisfying readReview Date: 2001-12-05
It's the latest fad drug and it's called 'Boomers'. It's highly addictive. Teenage girls are being talked into trying it, and when they get hooked, they gladly sell there bodies for more. When a bad batch gets out, lives are lost. Mostly young teenagers. This is when Texas rangers' Travis and Manny get on the case.
The story should be aimed at parents and teenagers. A rather moral tale that describes some of the perils of teenage drug use. There is suspense to go with the emotion. It's also laced with humor, especially when it comes to Manny and Travis. Being a short novel, as this was, it did lack some depth but it still kept me in my chair.

Incredibly Fertile Study Review Date: 2007-04-08
Simply put, this ranks near the top of the mountain of books on Richard Wagner, and certainly as one the very best books about him released within the last 10 years.
Tanner gives some incredible insights, such as seeing Tristan und Isolde as a humanist "religious" work; this insight spurred an entire book (also well worth checking-out), called Death-Devoted Heart, by noted philosopher, Roger Scruton.
Perhaps the greatest value that this excellent book possesses is Tanner's rebuttal of the usual criticisms of Wagner. Everybody "knows" the Wagner was an amoral Casanova with proto-Nazi tendencies. Actually, the truth is far more interesting, and while Tanner doesn't whitewash Wagner's repulsive anti-Semitism, he brings it into considerably sharper focus than most Wagner scribes.
This is a welcome antidote to the shrill screeds that seem to be churned out constantly by the anti-Wagner lobby, while at the same time a measured and sober look at Wagner's artistic achievements. Highly recommended!
A philosophical approachReview Date: 2005-03-05
After analyzing Wagner in general, Tanner does an opera by opera review, concentrating on the meaning and philosophical underpinnings of each. This is no entry level plot summary; rather, Tanner dissects Wagner's works on a deeper level. In reading this book, it would be helpful if the reader was already familiar with Wagner's operas. Tanner covers Wagner's earlier operas which were fairly traditional with melodic area's and duets, and traces his evolution to the great musical dramatist that he became, culminating in the four opera Ring Cycle. If you seek to familiarize yourself with Wagner, this book is probably not for you. If you seek to gain an understanding of Wagner, this book is highly recommended.

Demystifying the Voice of God?Review Date: 2005-12-04
Take, for example, the often enigmatic process of hearing and recognizing the voice of God. Most adults couldn't explain this mystery to one another, much less a child. However, When God Speaks makes a valiant effort towards "demystifying" this subject.
For critical thinkers, the authors' attempt to establish a broad and far-reaching definition of prophecy will give you plenty to mull over as you compare it to those things which are directly spelled out in Scripture. And for those interested in dreams, visions, signs and wonders, there's an interesting guide included in the appendix.

However, there are a few shortcomings. As with all books with multiple contributors, I find some points being extremely redundant. Sure, it's good to nail those into your head, but I find it annoying. Second, I find the practical aspects of nuclear medicine to be not as thorough as I had wished. One example while reading the pediatrics urology section, the authors explained the development/anatomy of the kidneys and ureter in three full pages, yet there is not even one sentence about the interpretation of radionuclide cystography. Let me repeat that, not even one sentence. There was no information on the grading and interpretation of the VCUG or radionuclide cystography. I find that troublesome. I sometimes find more useful information in my Requisites than this two volume book.
So if you have money to spend, want something pretty, and don't already have a good reference then this two volume book will be useful to you.
