An Amazing True-to-Life Adventure
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-19
Those who seek adventure that exists outside fiction will revel in the exploits in this book! Out of print for a number of years, the book resurfaces from obscurity in all its glory! Tristan Jones was not just an amazing adventurer, he was also a born philosopher. The book bulges with example after example of Jones' dedication to the concept that launched this remarkable real-life voyage. Sadly, Tristan Jones has left us, but this book (and all his others) survive him as a testament to the amazing life of this larger-that-life man. Jones did not sugar-coat the trials and tribulations of his and his companions' unbelievable achievement. He was not afraid to reveal the ebb and flow of his emotions during this journey; he openly reveals the doldrums of despair during dark moments when he feared his mission would fail, as well as the heights of his pure joy as the obstacles were overcome. In a world where many of our adventures are built in the realm of fiction, this one stands out as a shining example of the adventures that can happen in the world around us, if we are dedicated to the goals we seek! Whether you are a fan of nautical adventure or not, this book is one you may find will reawaken your belief in the potential of the human race! Buy a copy to wear out, and then buy a dozen to give away!

Homiletics 101
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-22
Wagner is consistent and penetrating in his observations. He expounds on the Apostle's homiletics in the first part of the book, thereby laying the foundation for their theology to be Christo-centric.

However, it was when dealing with the individual sermons in Acts themselves, that Wagner came into his full right. He analyzes and questions and answers all in one breath. The time-honored act of preaching is researched back to its origin, God. Agreeably, Wagner avers that the Apostles were commissioned by Christ to preach, and as such, their preaching should model all subsequent biblical utterances.

One very interesting observation was made by Wagner, when stating that 'when Peter stood up and spoke with a loud voice' in Acts 2, the Greek word used is 'apophthegomai' - literally meaning to prophesy. This word corresponds to the OT usage in the Septuagint. And so preaching originally could only have been divine and inspired prophecy. (*remembering that there was no Bible as yet to preach from, so the Apostles had to be inspired by the Holy Spirit to 'prophecy' God's Word) Could this be credible evidence of prophecy being 'divine utterance' and therefore what is purported by today's prophetic movement as prophecy, actually be hyper-pneumatic drivel?

A solid study of Acts and a valuable addition to homiletics.

Why is this not considered a classic?

I saw a documentary on the Mosquito bomber the other night and it mentioned a raid on a prison in Amiens that was quite successful. Not having heard of it and being a student of history, it intrigued me and I found this gem at my local library. I got much more than I hoped for.

This book tells an interesting and complex story about the Amiens raid, the reasons for it and the very different people involved. In 1943 the French Resistance was taking a hit from the Gestapo collaborating with treasonous locals and intelligence preparations for D-Day were being compromised. Many key members of the Resistance were captured, being tortured and awaiting execution. The resistance urgently requested a raid and the British, not wanting to bomb allies, were hesitant but soon realized a raid was the most prudent thing to do. And they did it in bold and spectacular fashion; just a day before many were scheduled to be executed.

What I enjoyed about this book is a description of the people involved and their motives. One immediately takes to the masterminds of the local resistance, feels sympathy for the petty criminals in the prison, hatred for the betrayals and you gain an appreciation for the British Mosquito crews. I especially liked how the locals outwitted the Gestapo while risking their lives daily and the lives of their families. Interesting is the portrait and stories of wartime forgers, safe crackers, shoplifters and prostitutes - truly enlightening.

One can't help but admire Flight Commander Pickard (and his remarkable sheep dog Ming) and the bravery of the war tired flight crews. And, of course, the book details the great versatility Mosquito bomber.

It was difficult to keep the story smooth as there were more than 400 prisoners in the jail (some to escape prosecution by the Gestapo on more serious charges!), each with their own interesting story but Fishman did a commendable job and writes in an easy prose. But you'll need to refer to the index to keep track of some characters. Of course more maps would have made this better but it's not a story of logistics but a story of humanity and their love of freedom. Reading how the true criminals bonded together while in the caves was surprising but there are many other surprises in this superb book.

Great great story and you'll understand more about how the French resistance operated and what life was like under German occupation in a typical French town. This should be a classic.

Wagner wanted to write music for the revolution. Mark Berry reminds us of this in an exciting new book that catapults us back to the heady turmoil of nineteenth-century political thought. Wagner was using the ancient myth of the Ring to dramatise the struggle of deadening powers of technology, economics, law and bourgeois morality with the eternal human spirit of freedom and love. Mark Berry's treatment of this shows he is the most important new person writing today about Wagner. Anyone wanting to think seriously about Wagner and his milieu must read Berry's important new book.
