Wagner, late Garter Principal King-of-Arms, was undoubtedly the most knowledgeable man in his profession in this century. This very detailed history of the origins and duties of the medieval herald, the court of chivalry, the often eccentric personalities of later heralds and their effects on the orders of knighthood (Knights of the Garter very nearly became hereditary in the eighteenth century, for instance), and the problematic role of the herald in the twentieth century, is a surprisingly engrossing social history of Britiain from a peculiar viewpoint. Wagner also was noted for a certain drollery in his narrative that may catch the reader off-guard.

NOTE: For broader coverage of the same and related topics, see Wagner's _Heralds and Heraldry in the Middle Ages: An Inquiry into the Growth of the Armorial Function of Heralds_ (London: Oxford University Press, 1939).

An engaging exploration of Paul's interaction with scriptures in Romans 9-11 and 15

J. Ross Wagner's doctoral thesis builds upon the intertextual work of Richard Hays to examine the manner in which Paul interprets scripture in Romans 9-11 and 15. This is a very helpful work which opens up these very difficult chapters by examining the voices that Paul is referencing or alluding to and then shows how these voices in concert with Paul's encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ shape his message. Heralds of the Good News is a deep engagement with Romans but is also readable for a person with some background in New Testament studies.

The College of Arms commissioned a series of 142 modeled and painted panels and shields in connection with the New York World's Fair of 1939, which were presented to the United States at the outbreak of the war. Most eventually went into storage at the Smithsonian until their resurrection in this volume on heraldic art. All are illustrated, described, and put into historical context, and they range in time from Simon de Montfort and "Strongbow" (Richard, Earl of Pembroke), through Cromwell and John Milton, to Cecil Rhodes and Ernest Rutherford.

The best book there is on cultural anti- Semitism
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-03
I remember reading this book many years ago at the State University of Binghamton Harpur College Library, and being filled with sadness by it. So many of the cultural heroes of the Western world from Voltaire to Wagner were anti- Semitic, or had some anti- Semitic writings. Many such as Tolstoy Goethe Dickens balanced anti- semitism with very pro- Jewish remarks. True Nietzche stood against Wagner. But on the whole even into this century with Pound, Eliot, Celine, Heidegger there were ' great creators' who bore in their mind and soul resentment and hatred of the Jews.
Even with Shakespeare who according to Harold Bloom's wonderful exaggeration ' invented the human' there is the question of his true intent with Shylock. Does a Jew really have hands and eyes for Shakespeare?
I believe that this book should be far more widely read and known than it is. And it should be part of the legacy of all those Jews who have given their lives to Western culture.

Interested in what happened to one of the greatest aviation engineers of the twentieth century? Interested in the genius behind the amazing developments in air warfare that came out of Germany's Third Reich? Then this book is for you! Dr. Kurt Tank, a contemporary of Willy Messerschmitt (the OTHER aviation genius of the twentieth century) was by far one of the most influential aircraft engineers to ever live. Follow his career from Germany, to Argentina after the war, to developing the trans-sonic fighters of the Pakistani Air Force! A must for WWII aviation enthusiasts, and students of aviation history!
