This listing is NOT a paperback, but a hard-copy with dust cover from LSU press in 1979. As a scholarly work on the depths and frequent perversions of 19th Century intellectual thought, "The Dream..." is thoroough, well written and well researched. If you seek insight into the thought patterns, philosophy, and psychological bent of such diverse personalities as Disraeli, Houston, Chamberlain, Shaw, Marx, Kant, and Freud, you will find it here. I'm just not quite clear as to how much you will find out about "Wagner's Ring and the Modern World".

This was a great book. I am one of the lucky ones and I have a rare hard-back copy of it. It starts out in Kristins dream when she is walking up to Freddy's house. If you can find a copy of this rare book don't hesitate to buy it. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

This is an amazing book, and greatly needed. It is the continuous history of Christianity in Palestine from the year 33 to now, detailing the ethnic cleansing of Palestinian Christians by the Israelis. Wagner writes without hate and without fear. This is not an attempt to bash Jews in any way. It is an attempt to bring to light a forgotten history. How we as Christians have been present there since the very beginning, in a continuous witness, until the present day. How Palestine was about 20% Christian, until al Nakba- the Catastrophe, when the Zionists invaded the land and took the land from the people of Palestine. And now, it is about 2% Christian- mostly because of flight to Western lands, since the Christians tended to be better educated and wealthier and able to leave when things got too hard.

And Wagner shows who it was who made it hard, and how purposely this plan was put in place. It is gut-wrenching to read accounts of people who saved Jews from the Nazis, as they watch the ethnic cleansing of a town. The Zionists go from house to house, shooting the victims. And the man who protected Jews, who watches this, reflects that it seemed just like what he had witnessed under the Nazi regime.

Thankfully, such genocide was localized. Unlike with the Nazis, on the whole, the ethnic cleansing was done without murder and mass destruction of a people. It was done surreptitiously, through disinformation, through enforced poverty, and generally making it hard to live there.

We've perhaps heard this before. What Wagner does is remind us that it was also happening to Christians- that this was an area with a large Christian minority at one point. He writes simply the story of Christianity in the land of it's birth, and it has its end with these last 50 years, as native Christians have endured persecution from the Israeli government as well as from Palestinian Muslims around them.

Wagner is to be applauded for writing a book about a neglected history, and doing it without resorting to hate speech to denigrate the Jewish people. He points out the problems with the government, and as he says, in order to truly be a brother to someone, you have to point out how they need to change, and become more just. This is the true sign of love and brotherhood. Wagner's evidence is overwhelming, and his writing compelling. This book should challenge and enlighten you into new ways of seeing and believing.

A really excellent anthology, managing a 4.00 average, (not counting the tiny fragment of white mammoth story at the end).

Along with stories of many characters, Conan, Jirel Of Joiry, Northwest Smith, and Hok there is some interesting non-fiction content in the introductions and a couple of letters.

The first 'Frost' story is an older version of this tale using the name 'Amra' - a name that Conan will be known by at times, later.

The Jirel/Northwest crossover is fabulous.

The introduction and aftewards of Nymph of Darkness contains some correspondence between Ackerman and Moore relating to the writing of that story.

The introduction to the Bradbury and Brackett team-up in 'Lorelei Of the Red Mist' points out exactly where Brackett stopped writing and Bradbury began the second half of the story. Page 176, about halfway down, in this book - there's whitespace, so easy to notice.

Or, around here, for those with other versions:

"There were three of them, slipping easily among the shining branches. The were pale golden, almost phosphorescent, about the size of large hounds."

There's a great quote from Brackett here, too, of the performance of flawless pastiche produced by Bradbury in this instance: "Son of a b1tch! Godd@mn! You're me!"

The point of this Echoes of Valor series was to reproduce obscure or long gone sword and sorcery (and sword and planet, in this book). Obviously this out of print obscurity is not the case at the moment for Leigh Brackett or Bradbury, but the same cannot be said for Manly Wade Wellman's caveman Hercules character Hok, who I had never heard of.

A great book, all around.

Conan meets a very pale woman after fighting a battle in the frozen north. She is haughty, and arrogant, and summons a couple of her brothers to fight Conan. Giant men they might be, but the Cimmerian grabs them, and then grabs the girl.

She calls to her father Ymir, and disappears. Conan wakes up - was it all a dream?

The wizard Franga is getting his arse handed him by Jirel so badly he has to summon help. The man, time and place he chooses to pick is Northwest Smith, having a quiet drink and convo in the future.

Northwest, of course, intrigued enough to step through a strange gate into the past is more than capable of smelling a rat, along with being impressed by the bloodnut warrior.

An invisible divine daughter of darkness runs into Northwest's arms, leading to a dangerous dance.

Running with a pack of females is Northwest Smith, fading in and out of a lost, cursed land, but there are hunters around.

An Excellent Guide to the Economics of Prospecting and Exploitation of Metals
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-30
This book presents much technical information, including sample calculations, that covers many aspects of metallic-ore exploration and exploitation. There are also helpful graphs and tables in the back of the book for such things as the conversion of one unit to another, determination of thickness factor in an ore when a hole is drilled an at angle relative to a dipping surface, gold prices, gold-size classification, etc.

Using this book, one can determine how many tons of ore are necessary to produce one ton of concentrate, the value of an ore consisting of many different metals, the optimal lifetime of an ore deposit, calculation of cutoff grades, and the economics of investment. A great amount of detail is devoted to the latter.

There is no mention of the prospecting and exploitation of the rare earth elements (REEs). Considering their importance in recent years, this is surprising.

Easy to understand but still delves into complex concepts. I loved the examples that the author uses, so the point where sometimes when studying I would get distracted by anecdotes and start reading all the way through totally engrossed. It is very interesting. ...Too bad I screwed up the class anyways... took too many courses.
